A headless browser runs a browser without displaying its normal user interface. Developers use it for unattended tasks such as automated testing, page rendering, and browser-driven workflows. “Headless” describes how the browser runs—not a guarantee that it is a separate, stripped-down browser or that websites cannot detect automation.
What is a headless browser?
A headless browser loads and processes web pages without opening a visible browser window. You can control it through command-line flags or an automation library, then inspect pages, interact with controls, or capture rendered output.
Headless is an execution mode, not a synonym for a different browser engine. Chrome’s current Headless mode shares its implementation with headful Chrome. Its older Headless implementation is available separately as chrome-headless-shell.
What is a headless browser used for?
- Automated testing: Load pages and exercise interactions without requiring a person to operate a visible window.
- Page rendering and capture: Render a page for a screenshot or PDF, including in unattended workflows.
- Browser automation: Perform scripted browser actions in environments where displaying a user interface is unnecessary.
Headless operation does not bypass access controls or ensure a site will treat automation like a regular visitor. Sites may still apply bot checks, authentication requirements, or other restrictions.

How is headless Chrome different from normal Chrome?
Chrome’s current Headless mode runs without visible UI while sharing Chrome’s implementation with headful mode. Chrome’s documentation says that, since Chrome 112, Headless creates platform windows but does not display them. Beginning with Chrome 132.0.6793.0, the older Headless implementation is available only as the standalone chrome-headless-shell binary. See Chrome’s Headless mode documentation.
The shell is not a perfect stand-in for regular Chrome. Puppeteer describes it as not completely matching regular Chrome, while noting that it can be more performant for automation that does not need Chrome’s complete feature set. That is a task-specific trade-off, not a universal speed guarantee.
Choosing Playwright, Puppeteer, or Selenium
There is no evidence-based universal winner among these automation tools. Choose according to the browsers you need to cover, the browser build your tests must match, and whether a headless shell’s narrower feature set fits the job.

| Puppeteer | Its Headless guide focuses on Chrome and Chrome Headless Shell. | headless: true is the documented default; headless: 'shell' selects the separate shell. Consider whether the task needs the complete Chrome feature set. Puppeteer Headless mode documentation. |
| Selenium | The cited project post discusses Firefox and Chromium-based browsers. | Use the current Selenium and browser documentation for exact APIs and flags; the cited post is historical context, not a current compatibility matrix. Selenium’s 2023 Headless post. |
Prioritize browser coverage
If you need to test across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, Playwright documents projects for those browser engines. If the requirement is a particular branded Chrome or Edge channel, account for that explicitly rather than assuming a bundled Chromium build is equivalent.

Match the browser build and mode to the environment that matters to your users. Playwright specifically notes differences between its default Chromium headless shell and Chrome or Edge’s new Headless mode in some cases.
Consider a shell when its trade-off fits
A shell can suit automation that does not require the full Chrome feature set. Puppeteer describes its shell mode as potentially more performant for that use, but the documentation does not establish a general benchmark or guarantee for every workload.

Puppeteer
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
Puppeteer documents headless: true as its default. To request the separate Chrome Headless Shell instead:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: 'shell' });
Playwright
Playwright’s documentation describes using the chromium channel to opt into Chrome’s new Headless mode. The exact setup depends on the Playwright version and installed browser channel; consult its browser guide rather than treating the default shell and branded Chrome mode as interchangeable.
Selenium
Chrome’s documentation illustrates passing the headless browser argument through Selenium. Exact setup depends on the Selenium binding and browser version. Selenium’s 2023 post provides historical context, so verify current APIs and flags in the relevant Selenium and browser documentation before adopting an example.

When a screenshot API is a better fit
If your goal is a rendered screenshot rather than general browser automation, an API can avoid setting up and maintaining a browser process yourself. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF; its options include full-page capture, element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, and PDF settings. It is not a replacement for a test framework when you need to exercise application behavior.
Or skip the browser setup
Make a single GET request with the target URL and your API key. The following cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Common pitfalls and troubleshooting
- The page behaves differently than expected: Check whether your automation is using Chrome Headless, Chrome Headless Shell, or a framework’s bundled headless browser. Compare against the browser build and mode you intend to support.
- A test passes headlessly but not in the target browser: Confirm that the test uses the relevant branded browser or channel when browser fidelity matters. A separate shell may not match the full browser in every case.
- A headless launch flag or option is rejected: Confirm the installed browser version and the automation library’s current API. Defaults and flag support are version-sensitive; do not assume a historical Selenium example applies unchanged.
- A site blocks or challenges the session: Headless mode is not a stealth mechanism and does not authorize access. Follow the site’s access rules and use supported authentication or APIs where appropriate.
FAQ
Does headless mean the browser is invisible to websites?
No. It means the browser does not display its normal user interface to you. It does not guarantee that a website cannot identify automation.
Is Chrome Headless Shell the same as current Chrome Headless?
No. Current Chrome Headless shares Chrome’s implementation with headful mode; Chrome Headless Shell is the separate older implementation.
Should every project use headless mode?
No. Use it when unattended execution suits the task. If you need to observe interactions or debug visually, a headed browser may be more useful.
