To scrape a website with low latency, first fetch its HTML with an ordinary HTTP client; use a browser only when the content you need appears after JavaScript runs. For ongoing collection across many pages, use a crawler that can discover URLs and run asynchronously. “Real time” is a latency target you define—not a guarantee that every source change will be detected immediately.

What “real time” means for web scraping

Set a measurable freshness target before choosing a tool: how long after a source page changes must your application be able to use the updated data? Account for the polling interval or crawl schedule, retrieval or job-completion time, and downstream processing. There is no universal interval or documented guarantee of instantaneous updates across websites.

A request that returns one page is different from a recurring crawl. A page fetch targets a known URL; a crawler can discover more pages from links or sitemaps, apply scope limits, and revisit pages on a schedule. Pick the smallest workflow that meets your freshness and coverage requirements.

Check the site before collecting data

Read the applicable robots.txt

Check the root robots.txt for the exact scheme, host, and port you plan to access. Google’s guidance explains that its rules apply to the host where the file is posted; a subdomain or a different protocol can have a different file and rules. Review the applicable user-agent group, path rules, and any sitemap references. See Google’s robots.txt guidance.

Check more than robots.txt

Robots rules are advisory, not an access-control mechanism or a legal ruling. Cloudflare describes them as voluntary guidance; authentication and server-side controls such as a WAF are what a site owner can use to enforce access restrictions. An allowance in robots.txt does not by itself settle whether collection complies with the site’s terms, contracts, privacy obligations, or applicable law. Check the site’s terms, API documentation, authentication requirements, and data-use restrictions as well. The answer can depend on the site, data, access method, and jurisdiction. Cloudflare’s robots.txt and sitemap reference explains its advisory status.

Crawler directives are not interpreted uniformly. For example, Cloudflare documents support for crawl-delay in its managed crawl endpoint, while Amazon says its named crawler agents do not support that directive. These are examples of those specific services, not a rule for every crawler. See Amazon’s AmazonBot documentation.

Choose the lightest method that gets the needed content

Approach Use it when Latency and scope Main trade-off
Direct/static HTTP fetch The required content is already in the server’s HTML response. A request/response for a chosen URL. Lightweight, but may miss content added by client-side JavaScript.
Browser rendering The content depends on JavaScript execution or browser state. A page request plus browser startup, rendering, and any wait you configure. Can expose rendered content, but adds browser work and can still time out or fail.
Managed asynchronous crawl You need recurring, multi-page collection and URL discovery. Submit a job, then retrieve results as pages are processed. Requires job, scope, and result handling; it does not make blocked pages accessible.

These are different workloads, not a universal speed or price ranking. The reviewed documentation does not establish an independent end-to-end latency benchmark showing that one approach is always faster or cheaper.

Build a bounded single-page scraper

Try a normal HTTP request first

The following Python 3 example uses only the standard library. It accepts a page URL, makes one request with a 15-second timeout, checks the HTTP response, and prints the page title and visible text. It is a starting point for pages whose content is present in the returned HTML; it does not execute JavaScript.

print("Title:", " ".join(page.title))
print("Text:", " ".join(page.parts))

Save it as scrape.py, then run python scrape.py https://example.com/page with a page you are permitted to access. For production, extract specific fields rather than treating all page text as a stable data format. Check the response content type and status, set a timeout, and record the source URL and retrieval time.

Use a browser when the HTML is only an application shell

If the server response lacks the data but the page displays it in a browser, render it and wait for a concrete selector that signals the required content is ready. For example, with Playwright for Python, install the package and browser once using python -m pip install playwright and python -m playwright install chromium. This example waits up to 15 seconds for a selector you supply, then reads the rendered text:

            print(await page.locator(selector).inner_text())
        finally:
            await browser.close()

asyncio.run(main())

Run it as python render.py https://example.com/page "main article", replacing the URL and selector with the page and content signal you are allowed to collect. A selector wait is more meaningful than an arbitrary long sleep when the page exposes a reliable element. Browser rendering still cannot guarantee success: the selector may change, the page can fail to load, or a site may present a challenge.

Use a crawler for recurring, multi-page collection

If you need pages beyond a hand-picked URL list, use link or sitemap discovery and restrict the crawl to the paths and depth your project needs. Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering /crawl flow is one documented example: submit a start URL, receive a job ID, and check results as the asynchronous job processes pages. It documents scope controls, incremental options, sitemap and link discovery, and a static mode for pages that do not need browser rendering. Cloudflare described the endpoint as open beta in its March 10, 2026 changelog; availability and behavior can change, so consult the current endpoint documentation before building against it.

A crawl job is not the same as a live feed. Your schedule, job duration, and processing pipeline determine when a change becomes usable. Incremental options can avoid some repeat work where supported, but they do not create an instantaneous-update guarantee.

Control load, retries, and changing limits

  • Use conservative concurrency and a schedule that meets your freshness target without hammering the site. Follow published limits and any applicable access requirements.
  • Set connection and overall timeouts. Retry only transient failures, cap attempts, and use backoff rather than a tight retry loop.
  • Keep failure states distinct: a timeout, an HTTP error, an empty page, and a valid result with no matching records are different outcomes.
  • Make recurring ingestion idempotent so a retry does not create duplicate records. Store timestamps and source URLs with extracted data, validate it against an expected schema, and flag unexpected empty output or structural changes.

Limits published by a service are not universal scraping limits. For example, WebscrapingAPI.dev’s documentation, reviewed October 3, 2026, lists 50,000 daily credits per account, 60 requests per minute per key, a default 15-second timeout with a 30-second maximum, and a 5 MB response-body cap. Those are that vendor’s changeable published limits, not independent performance results or rules for other services. Check its current API documentation before relying on them.

Do not treat a bot check, CAPTCHA, or block as a cue to evade it. Cloudflare says its documented /crawl endpoint cannot bypass Cloudflare bot detection or captchas and identifies itself as a bot. Stop, reduce or discontinue requests, and use an authorized API or seek permission if access is restricted.

Or skip the browser setup

For visual page monitoring, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It returns an image or PDF, not structured text fields, so it is not a substitute for an HTML extractor when your application needs records or values. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

Emerging access protocols are not permission by themselves

A September 2026 arXiv preprint proposes terms.txt as a consent and compensation protocol for agentic web access; it does not establish that format as an adopted web standard. The paper reports 0.20 to 0.65 ms of added overhead per request for its own dependency-free implementation on one vCPU. That narrow implementation result is not a general scraping-latency benchmark. See the preprint.
