Measure Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) first: they describe loading, responsiveness, and visual stability. Pair real-user field data with controlled lab tests, assess Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile, and use First Contentful Paint (FCP), Time to First Byte (TTFB), and Total Blocking Time (TBT) to diagnose causes rather than substitute for the core metrics.
The metrics that matter most
Core Web Vitals are outcome measures of user experience. LCP covers loading, INP covers responsiveness, and CLS covers visual stability. Google’s guidance evaluates whether at least 75% of page visits meet the good threshold for each vital, so a site-wide average or a single score is not enough.
| Metric | What it measures | Good | Role and measurement caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP | When the likely main content appears | ≤2.5 seconds | Core Web Vital; measurable in field and lab tests. |
| INP | Responsiveness across interactions during a page visit | ≤200 milliseconds | Core Web Vital; requires user interactions, so a page-load-only lab test cannot directly measure it. |
| CLS | Unexpected visual instability | ≤0.1 | Core Web Vital; available in field and lab, though a lab run without interaction may miss later shifts. |
The good, needs-improvement, and poor bands in Chrome’s guidance are respectively 0–2,500 ms, 2,500–4,000 ms, and above 4,000 ms for LCP; 0–200 ms, 200–500 ms, and above 500 ms for INP; and 0–0.10, 0.10–0.25, and above 0.25 for CLS. These are guidance thresholds, not results from a dated independent study. Chrome’s Web Vitals overview explains the metrics and their field and lab roles.
Supporting metrics for finding causes
Supporting metrics help locate the source of a problem, but they do not replace Core Web Vitals.

| Metric | What it helps diagnose | Good guidance threshold | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCP | Time until the first foreground content appears | ≤1.8 seconds | Loading diagnostic that can help investigate delays related to LCP. |
| TTFB | Time until the server begins responding | ≤0.8 seconds | Loading diagnostic for the response phase; PageSpeed Insights labels it experimental. |
| TBT | Main-thread blocking during page load | No Core Web Vital threshold stated in this guidance | Lab diagnostic proxy for potential interactivity problems; it is not INP. |
The FCP and TTFB thresholds are the ones shown in Chrome’s PageSpeed Insights guidance. A TBT result can point toward main-thread work that may affect responsiveness, but its calculation differs from INP and it must not be reported as an INP value.
Use field and lab measurements together
Field data: what users experienced
Field data aggregates real visits across users’ devices, networks, locations, content, and interactions. Chrome UX Report (CrUX) provides aggregated real-user experience data. PageSpeed Insights and Search Console use a past-28-days window for their field reporting; CrUX reporting is organized by calendar month. Field coverage is not guaranteed for every page or metric. The Web Vitals measurement guide, last updated 2025-09-09 UTC, describes these reporting approaches and their caveats.

For more detailed and timely pageview-level telemetry, supplement CrUX with your own real-user monitoring (RUM). The web-vitals JavaScript library is one implementation option described in the guide; its measurements need to be sent to an analytics or reporting endpoint to be useful.
Lab data: reproduce and diagnose
Lab tests run under controlled conditions, making them useful for debugging and catching regressions before release. Lighthouse and browser performance tools provide diagnostics, but a lab device, network, cache state, location, or interaction pattern may differ from those of real visitors. A lab score is not a complete account of user experience.

Choose a tool for the question
- Quick check of one page: PageSpeed Insights combines CrUX field data when available with Lighthouse lab information. A page may not have enough field data for every metric.
- Site-wide triage: Search Console groups similar URLs to surface patterns across pages; it is not the best tool for checking the status of one specific URL.
- Local debugging: Chrome DevTools’ Performance panel reports local Core Web Vitals. Lighthouse is available in DevTools, as a package, or in CI.
- Specified device or network conditions: WebPageTest lets testers choose conditions for a run.
- Production detail: Use RUM when you need your own per-pageview measurements and segmentation beyond aggregated CrUX data.
For a reproducible visual capture of a page state alongside performance debugging, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server: ScreenshotNeo. A screenshot records appearance, not a Core Web Vital measurement.
How to interpret results without being misled
Use percentiles and distributions
Assess each Core Web Vital at the 75th percentile: the recommended criterion is that at least 75% of page visits meet the good threshold for that metric. Inspect the distribution and the page groups affected, not just a median or average; a central value can conceal a slow tail. Compare like with like by using the same percentile and segmenting by page group and user conditions where the data supports it.

Keep lab proxies in their place
TBT is a lab proxy that can help investigate main-thread blocking, but it is not INP and a page-load-only lab run cannot directly measure responsiveness across real user interactions. Likewise, an interaction-free lab run may not trigger layout shifts that occur later in a visit. Use field data to assess those experiences.
Investigate changes before assigning a cause
A change in field status is not proof that a particular code release caused it. Traffic mix, network conditions, browser changes, and upstream service latency can also move results. Check whether the same page groups and user conditions changed, then use controlled lab runs to investigate plausible causes.

A practical measurement workflow
- Start with the user-facing outcomes. Record LCP, INP, and CLS for the pages or page groups that matter.
- Check field coverage. In PageSpeed Insights, compare available CrUX data with the Lighthouse result. If field data is absent, treat the lab result as diagnostic evidence, not a real-user verdict.
- Segment the problem. Inspect distributions at the 75th percentile and group results by similar page types and available user conditions.
- Reproduce locally. Use Chrome DevTools or Lighthouse for controlled debugging; specify device and network conditions in WebPageTest when needed.
- Choose supporting metrics based on the symptom. Examine FCP and TTFB for loading delays, and TBT for potential main-thread blocking. Do not substitute these for LCP or INP.
- Monitor production when aggregate data is insufficient. Send
web-vitalsmeasurements to a reporting endpoint if you need detailed RUM. - Validate fixes over time. Search Console describes a 28-day validation session for checking whether an issue reappears after a fix; it is a monitoring window, not an instant retest.
Or skip the browser setup

Common measurement mistakes
- Treating one Lighthouse score as the user experience: lab conditions cannot represent every visitor or interaction; compare against field data when available.
- Calling TBT “INP”: they are different measures. Use TBT to investigate, and field interaction data to assess INP.
- Relying on a median alone: assess the 75th percentile and inspect distributions so slow experiences are visible.
- Assuming every URL has field data: PageSpeed Insights may not show enough CrUX data for a page or metric; use lab tools for diagnosis and RUM when finer production coverage is needed.
- Blaming code for every field-status change: review traffic, network, browser, and upstream service conditions before drawing a causal conclusion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a page need to pass all three Core Web Vitals?
The recommended assessment expects at least 75% of page visits to meet the good threshold for each Core Web Vital; evaluate LCP, INP, and CLS separately.
Can a screenshot tell me whether a page passes Core Web Vitals?
No. A screenshot documents a visual state; Core Web Vitals require performance measurements from field or lab methods suited to the metric.
