To generate an NUnit test report, first identify the test runner your project uses. Use the NUnit Console Runner for native NUnit XML, VSTest-based dotnet test for TRX or HTML loggers, or Microsoft.Testing.Platform (MTP) with a registered report extension. These routes produce different artifacts and use different options.
Choose the report route that matches your test runner
| What you need | Route | Artifact |
|---|---|---|
| Machine-readable NUnit results from a batch run | NUnit Console Runner | NUnit 3 XML, or legacy NUnit 2 XML when required |
| Results for a CI service or tool that consumes Visual Studio test results | VSTest-based dotnet test |
TRX |
A human-readable HTML file from VSTest-based dotnet test |
VSTest HTML logger | HTML |
| An MTP-based workflow | Microsoft.Testing.Platform | TRX or HTML through an installed report extension |
Check the project’s actual execution route before copying a command: nunit3-console and dotnet test are distinct ways to run tests, and VSTest and MTP use different report interfaces. The NUnit documentation describes the Console Runner as a command-line batch runner (NUnit Console Runner; NUnit running tests).
Generate native NUnit XML with the Console Runner
The NUnit Console Runner saves results in XML. To choose an output file and explicitly request native NUnit 3 format, run:
nunit3-console MyTests.dll --result=TestResult.xml;format=nunit3
Replace MyTests.dll with your test assembly or an NUnit-understood project. In shells that treat semicolons as command separators, quote or escape the result argument, for example:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
nunit3-console MyTests.dll '--result=TestResult.xml;format=nunit3'
The result option accepts an output specification in the form --OPTION:filename, with an optional ;format=formatname or ;transform=xsltfile suffix. Documented formats include nunit3 and legacy nunit2. If neither --result nor --explore is specified, the runner writes TestResult.xml in NUnit 3 format. Use --work to choose the working directory for generated output. See the Console Runner command-line documentation.
Native XML is the result data, not an HTML report. Choose it when a downstream tool consumes NUnit XML or when you will process or transform the data. A transform must handle native NUnit 3 XML.
Generate TRX or HTML with VSTest-based dotnet test
For projects using the VSTest-based dotnet test route, Microsoft documents these logger commands:

TRX results
dotnet test --logger trx
To select a results directory, add --results-directory:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →dotnet test --logger trx --results-directory ./artifacts/test-results
When omitted, the documented default is a TestResults directory beside the project file.
HTML results
dotnet test --logger "html;logfilename=testResults.html" --results-directory ./artifacts/test-results
For a particular TRX filename, Microsoft also documents the logfilename setting. In a multi-targeted project, the same specified TRX filename is reused for each target framework, so a later target’s output can overwrite an earlier one. Use the documented LogFilePrefix pattern or another unique naming strategy when you need to keep each target’s artifact. Check Microsoft’s current VSTest dotnet test logger and results-directory options for the exact syntax supported by your SDK.

When Microsoft tools run NUnit tests, the NUnit3TestAdapter is part of the execution path. Adapter settings can also generate NUnit Test Result XML; this is separate from VSTest’s TRX or HTML logger output. Which adapter settings are available depends on the installed version. The NUnit documentation notes folder-mode behaviors introduced in adapter versions 4.3.0 and 4.3.1; verify your adapter version before depending on those settings (NUnit running tests and adapter documentation).
Generate reports with Microsoft.Testing.Platform
MTP report formats are provided by extensions, not by MTP core. Microsoft lists TRX and HTML report extensions; install and register the extension for the format you need, then use the report switches and filename options that extension supports. An unregistered extension can make a switch such as --report-trx unrecognized.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set the output directory with --results-directory. Check available options using the test app’s --help output or dotnet test --help when running in MTP mode. Do not assume VSTest’s --logger syntax applies. Consult Microsoft’s MTP report extension documentation for the current package and option details.

Check the report before publishing or archiving it
- Confirm the output file exists in the configured working or results directory.
- Check that the extension or logger produced the format the next CI step or tool expects; XML, TRX, and HTML are not interchangeable.
- For multi-targeted VSTest runs, verify that each target framework’s result has a unique filename if all artifacts must be retained.
- When using adapter-specific NUnit XML output, check the installed adapter version and its output-location settings.
Troubleshoot common report-generation problems
The Console Runner does not recognize the test input
Pass the test assembly or a project format understood by NUnit, and confirm the Console Runner is the route your project uses. The Console Runner’s command-line options do not configure a VSTest or MTP run.
The XML is not an HTML report
nunit3-console produces NUnit result XML. Use a compatible reporting or transformation step to present it as HTML, or use the VSTest HTML logger or an MTP HTML report extension if that matches the project’s runner.
A semicolon breaks the Console Runner command
Quote or escape the complete --result argument so the shell passes ;format=nunit3 to the runner as part of the option.

The MTP report switch is unrecognized
Check that the report extension package is installed and registered, then inspect the test app’s help output for its supported switches. MTP report extensions are not included in MTP core.
One target framework’s TRX file replaces another
A fixed TRX logfilename is reused across target frameworks in a multi-targeted run. Use LogFilePrefix or a different unique-name strategy, then rerun and confirm all expected files remain.
NUnit XML from the adapter is missing or in an unexpected folder
Review the NUnit3TestAdapter’s TestOutputXml settings and the documentation for the installed adapter version. Adapter output and VSTest logger output are separate artifacts with separate configuration.

If you need a screenshot of a generated report or another web page rather than a test-result artifact, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. One thousand screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
