Download the Windows installer from the official wkhtmltopdf downloads page, choose the 64-bit build for a typical x64 Windows 11 PC, then check the installation from a new terminal with wkhtmltoimage --version. The project lists Windows support for Vista or later, but its published material does not state that Windows 11 was specifically tested. The tool is also legacy software, so consider its security and maintenance limits before using it for anything beyond a trusted, existing workflow.
Download the official Windows installer
- Open the official downloads page. It links to releases hosted through GitHub and lists Windows installers for 64-bit and 32-bit systems, as well as a 7z archive.
- On a typical x64 Windows 11 computer, choose the 64-bit Windows installer, named
wkhtmltox-0.12.6-1.msvc2015-win64.exe. Use the official project download rather than a third-party download site. - Run the downloaded
.exe. If Windows displays a confirmation prompt, review it and proceed only if you intended to download the installer from the official project page. Follow the standard installer prompts and note the destination folder, in case you need to run the program by its full path.
The project lists the installer support floor as Windows Vista or later. That published range includes Windows 11, but the project does not state that it tested this release specifically on Windows 11. Its page offers the installer; it does not provide a Windows 11-specific, click-by-click installation walkthrough.
Check that Windows can launch wkhtmltoimage
Open a fresh Command Prompt or PowerShell window and run:
wkhtmltoimage --version
If the command is available, it should print the installed version. The current stable series listed by the project is 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020. Running this command is a practical verification step; it is not a Windows 11 test result reported by the project.

Fix “not recognized” after installation
If Command Prompt or PowerShell says wkhtmltoimage is not recognized, Windows has not found the executable through the current PATH. The reviewed project documentation does not establish that the installer always adds its folder to PATH.
- Find
wkhtmltoimage.exein the destination folder you noted during setup. It may be inside abinsubfolder. - Test it using its full path. For example, in PowerShell, enter
& "C:pathtowkhtmltoimage.exe" --version, replacing the example path with the actual location. In Command Prompt, enter"C:pathtowkhtmltoimage.exe" --version. - If that works, either keep using the full path or add the folder containing
wkhtmltoimage.exeto your user PATH. Add the folder, not the executable file itself. - Close and reopen the terminal, then retry
wkhtmltoimage --version. Existing terminal windows may not see an updated PATH.
Decide whether wkhtmltoimage is suitable for your work
wkhtmltoimage is a command-line renderer that converts HTML into image formats using Qt WebKit. The project says its tools can run headlessly and do not require a display service, which can suit an existing scripted workflow. That does not make it a current, general-purpose browser engine.

The project describes the software as legacy: Qt 4 has not been supported since 2015, and its WebKit has not been updated since 2012. The stable 0.12.6 release dates to 2020; the source repository was archived on January 2, 2023, and the packaging repository on August 28, 2023. These facts matter if you need ongoing maintenance or security support, even if the executable launches successfully.
Do not feed it untrusted HTML
The wkhtmltopdf project warns, “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML.” Its status guidance explains that unsanitized user-supplied HTML or JavaScript can expose the server running the tool to complete takeover. Do not use this renderer on a server with untrusted input unless that input is appropriately controlled and sanitized; local execution does not remove the need to consider what the HTML can do.

Choose an alternative based on what you render
The project suggests considering Puppeteer for pages that depend on dynamic JavaScript. For report generation from controlled HTML, it names WeasyPrint and the commercial tool Prince as alternatives to investigate. These are project suggestions, not guarantees of performance or suitability for every workload. Evaluate rendering behavior, input trust, and maintenance expectations for your specific use case. If your goal is simply to capture a webpage rather than install a local HTML renderer, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
