Vultr documents 2 TB of free bandwidth per account each month plus instance bandwidth accrued hourly, while Hetzner lists 20 TB of included traffic for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers; Hetzner’s US and Singapore allowances vary by plan. Those figures are not directly interchangeable, and neither provider’s plan name proves it can encode your chosen stream.
For a continuous YouTube loop, the recurring data transfer can matter as much as CPU. Calculate traffic from the stream’s bitrate and runtime, check current location-specific terms, and decide whether you need to relay an already encoded file or transcode it. What matters most for a 24/7 YouTube loop
For a Vultr vs Hetzner decision, start with the server’s outgoing data allowance at the location and plan you would actually use. A 24/7 feed continuously sends data to YouTube, so bitrate and runtime determine how much outbound traffic it uses. Then compare the complete server cost, including any applicable overage and IP charges, and test the FFmpeg job on the intended server.
- Traffic: compare the allowance for the exact provider, product family, region, and plan.
- Workload: relaying an already encoded stream is not the same job as transcoding or generating video.
- Operations: plan for monitoring and recovery; provider traffic figures and availability terms do not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube stream.

Calculate how much bandwidth an FFmpeg YouTube loop uses
Use the outgoing stream’s total bitrate and actual runtime. For a rough decimal estimate, monthly data in GB is approximately:
bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 × hours streamed
For example, at a steady 14 Mbps for a 30-day month, the estimate is 14 × 0.45 × 720 = 4,536 GB, or about 4.5 TB. This is an estimate based on continuous runtime and the configured bitrate; actual transfer can differ with bitrate behavior and protocol overhead. If a backup feed streams at the same time, include its traffic too.

YouTube’s encoder guide recommends matching bitrate to resolution, codec, and frame rate. For H.264, its recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30; these are YouTube recommendations, not proof a VPS can sustain the workload. Use the appropriate row in YouTube’s current guide for your configuration: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Choose the server for the FFmpeg job, not the name
Relaying an already encoded video
If FFmpeg sends a file without changing its codec or resolution, the job is primarily about reliably reading the media and maintaining the outgoing connection. Validate the actual command and stream on the chosen instance; do not infer sustained performance solely from a product family or CPU label.

Transcoding or generating video
If FFmpeg encodes, scales, composites, or generates frames, CPU demand depends on the codecs, resolution, frame rate, filters, and encoder settings. There is no comparable Vultr-versus-Hetzner FFmpeg benchmark established here, so test the exact workload and watch for dropped frames or an encoder that cannot keep pace.
Set up YouTube Live before you compare server results
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. Enabling a first live stream can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
- Use the right ingest protocol and encoder settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Follow the current recommendation for the chosen codec and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.
- Protect the stream key. Add the YouTube stream key to the encoder configuration without exposing it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the server.
- Test in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing and previewing the feed before relying on it, then monitoring audio and video quality. Allow upload headroom: YouTube recommends leaving 20% room beyond the stream’s total bitrate. See encoder settings and streaming tips.
- Check content rights and policies. A 24/7 loop does not exempt a channel from YouTube rules. YouTube’s encoder setup page includes an example tool for streaming prerecorded video 24/7, but it does not establish that every repeated video is allowed or will be monetized. Use content you have rights to stream and review YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
Compare total cost and operational risk
Once you have a monthly traffic estimate, compare it with the exact plan’s allowance, then check overage terms, server charges, and additional services. For Hetzner, include applicable public IP charges and remember that an existing server can continue to incur charges while off. For Vultr, check the account and instance allocation model and applicable regional pricing. Do not assume a low base server price means a low 24/7 streaming cost.

Location can affect both price and network path. Choose a region suitable for the media source and YouTube ingest location where available, then test the connection rather than assuming that geographic proximity alone guarantees stream quality. Configure monitoring and a restart or recovery procedure; neither provider’s published traffic allocation nor the cited SLA guarantees that YouTube will accept or keep a feed live.

- Unexpected traffic charges: compare actual outbound data with the bitrate-based estimate, account for any concurrent backup stream, and re-check the chosen plan’s current allowance and overage rules.
- Stream disconnects or fails to start: verify the stream key and ingest settings, check server connectivity and FFmpeg logs, and inspect the stream preview in Live Control Room. Add monitoring so a failed process does not go unnoticed.
- Video stutters or encoding falls behind: distinguish network trouble from compute limits. Check whether FFmpeg is transcoding or applying filters, and test the same codec, resolution, and frame rate on the selected instance.
- Stream quality is unstable despite adequate server traffic allowance: allowance is a monthly billing quantity, not a guarantee of sustained throughput. Check available upload bandwidth and leave headroom as YouTube recommends.
- Server charges continue after stopping it: on Hetzner, switching a server off does not stop charges while the server still exists; delete it if you no longer need it, after preserving required data.
