A YouTube stream that appears frozen is not necessarily an NVENC failure. First check whether the freeze is visible in OBS’s preview or local recording, whether OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, whether its connection statistics show dropped frames, or whether only viewers are buffering. Each points to a different fix.

Find where the stream is freezing

Before changing encoder settings, run a short test stream. Watch the OBS preview, make a local recording, note OBS’s performance and connection statistics, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health messages. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and a local archive; if both look and sound healthy, investigate the outbound internet connection instead (YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide).

What you observe Likely area to investigate
OBS preview or local recording stutters, or OBS reports rendering or encoding lag GPU workload, scene complexity, or output demands
OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects Connection stability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain
OBS output and local recording look healthy, but YouTube reports stream-health problems YouTube ingest settings or the outbound path to YouTube
OBS and YouTube show a healthy stream, but some viewers report buffering Viewer playback or connection conditions; this alone does not prove NVENC stalled

Use the counters and health messages as evidence rather than diagnosing from the appearance of a frozen player. OBS distinguishes rendering or encoding lag from dropped frames, and viewer buffering is a separate symptom (OBS connection troubleshooting; OBS buffering troubleshooting; YouTube live-stream error messages).

If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag

NVENC performs video encoding on NVIDIA hardware, but OBS still needs GPU resources to render and composite scenes. As OBS Project puts it, “OBS needs GPU time and resources because it has to composite and render a scene” (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting). A GPU-heavy game or other application can therefore leave too little capacity for OBS even when encoding is set to NVENC.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
  1. Reduce competing GPU work. Close GPU-heavy applications you recognize. If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, then lower demanding game graphics settings.
  2. Simplify what OBS renders. Remove unnecessary scene elements and filters, then test again.
  3. Reduce OBS output demands if needed. Lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
  4. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick fix to try for GPU overload, not a guaranteed cure.
  5. Repeat the short test. Compare the preview, local recording, and OBS rendering or encoding counters before and after each change. Change one class of demand at a time so you can tell what helped.

These steps target a resource bottleneck; they do not guarantee that every freeze has the same cause.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections

Dropped frames point to the connection between OBS and the remote server, not automatically to an old encoder. OBS defines them this way: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate” (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

  • Check OBS’s connection statistics during a test and note whether dropped frames rise when the stream freezes.
  • Check that your outbound connection is stable and can sustain the configured bitrate. A bitrate that exceeds stable upload capacity can cause problems even if a brief speed test looks adequate.
  • Review YouTube Live Control Room’s health messages and follow YouTube’s connection troubleshooting guidance. If the evidence points to the connection, YouTube recommends consulting your internet service provider.
  • OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate during congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce quality.

Changing NVENC generations will not repair an unstable network path. Keep network-dropped frames separate from OBS rendering or encoding lag when assessing results.

Check OBS and YouTube ingest settings

For a YouTube RTMP or RTMPS stream, use settings that match the selected codec and output. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, recommends CBR, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency. The keyframe interval must not exceed four seconds; YouTube warns that a longer interval can cause buffering. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises testing before going live while monitoring stream health (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube live-stream error messages).

YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations

The following are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 by ingest resolution and frame rate, on the current page accessed in 2026. They are not guarantees that your connection can sustain the bitrate.

Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p60 17 Mbps — YouTube Help, current page accessed 2026
1080p30 14 Mbps — YouTube Help, current page accessed 2026
720p60 8 Mbps — YouTube Help, current page accessed 2026
720p30 6 Mbps — YouTube Help, current page accessed 2026
480p30 4 Mbps — YouTube Help, current page accessed 2026
360p30 4 Mbps — YouTube Help, current page accessed 2026

These values are specifically for H.264; YouTube’s AV1 and H.265 recommendations differ. Do not apply the H.264 figures to another codec as though they were interchangeable. Check the current YouTube settings page for the codec you use.

Does an older NVIDIA GPU need replacing?

Not based on age alone. OBS’s hardware encoding guide lists GeForce GTX 750 Ti, 900-series (Maxwell), or newer as supporting NVIDIA NVENC, and recommends a GPU with 6th-generation NVENC (Turing) for best results. The guide notes that GTX 1650 revision 1 has 5th-generation NVENC. Keep NVIDIA drivers current and verify the exact GPU model and revision (OBS hardware encoding guide).

Those compatibility and generation references do not promise that a particular card can handle every game, scene, output resolution, or frame rate. Consider an upgrade only if repeatable tests still show that your intended workload cannot be sustained after reducing competing GPU work and OBS demands. If you investigate a Turing-generation card, verify its exact model and revision and current compatibility before buying; there is no single model or purchase threshold established by these references.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a different option from diagnosing an OBS setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not going live from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
