Convert a website to PDF with wkhtmltopdf https://example.com page.pdf. The command-line examples below cover local HTML, page layout, margins, and combining pages into one document. wkhtmltopdf is an older tool: its upstream GitHub repository was archived on January 2, 2023, so check the options supported by your installed build and do not assume every modern site will render correctly.
Convert a website to PDF
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com page.pdfThe general command shape is wkhtmltopdf [GLOBAL OPTION]... [OBJECT]... <output file>. The project describes wkhtmltopdf as an open-source command-line tool that renders HTML to PDF using the Qt WebKit rendering engine. See the project overview.
Replace the example URL and output filename with the page and PDF name you want. The command syntax and options here follow the official usage reference; they have not been executed or tested here. Exact support can vary by installed build.

wkhtmltopdf ./page.html page.pdfUse the path to your HTML file in place of ./page.html. If your document relies on local images, stylesheets, or scripts, rendering may depend on the installed build and its local-file access behavior; consult that build’s help output if resources do not appear.
Set paper size, orientation, and margins
Choose paper size and orientation
Put global page-layout options before the input object:
wkhtmltopdf --page-size A4 --orientation Landscape https://example.com page.pdfThis requests A4 paper in landscape orientation. Confirm that your installed binary recognizes both options; the project’s downloads guidance notes that some features require a Qt-patched build: wkhtmltopdf downloads guidance.

Set page margins
Margin values can include units, as in this example:

wkhtmltopdf --margin-top 15mm --margin-bottom 15mm https://example.com page.pdfThis sets the top and bottom margins to 15 mm. Add or adjust other margin options as needed, checking wkhtmltopdf --extended-help or the help text available in your installation for supported names and values.
Combine a cover, table of contents, and pages
wkhtmltopdf accepts page objects, a cover, and a toc object. Objects are placed in the PDF in the order supplied. For example:

wkhtmltopdf cover https://example.com/cover toc https://example.com/chapter-1 https://example.com/chapter-2 book.pdfThis command requests a cover, then a table of contents, then the two chapter pages, followed by the output filename. The usage reference also allows page options after an individual page object, so an option can be scoped to that object rather than applied globally. Check the installed build’s help for the exact option syntax and support.
Headers, footers, backgrounds, and page loading
The usage reference documents controls for printing backgrounds, using print media, headers and footers, delaying JavaScript, and waiting for a chosen window.status. These can help with pages that depend on styling or client-side rendering, but their availability can depend on the build.

wkhtmltopdf --extended-helpor the help output available in your build. - Place global options before the objects they affect. Put page-specific options after the relevant page object where supported.
- Use the documented delay or status-wait controls only when a page needs extra time or a known readiness signal; a wait cannot guarantee that arbitrary modern site scripts will finish rendering.
- If a setting is rejected or ignored, verify whether the installed build supports it and whether it is a Qt-patched build.
Limitations and troubleshooting
The command is not recognized
If your shell reports that wkhtmltopdf is not found, the executable may not be installed or may not be on your PATH. Install an appropriate build using the project’s downloads guidance, then check that the command is available and inspect its help output.

An option is unknown or has no effect
Builds do not necessarily support every documented feature. Compare the option with wkhtmltopdf --extended-help and consult the download guidance about Qt-patched builds. Do not assume an option works simply because it appears in an example.
The PDF is blank or incomplete
The examples establish command syntax, not compatibility with every current website. A site’s JavaScript, access controls, or rendering behavior may prevent a complete result with this older WebKit-based tool. Try the documented delay or status wait if the page needs time to render, and compare the result with the source page; no wait setting guarantees compatibility.
Layout or page order is unexpected
Check the requested paper size, orientation, and margins, and verify that global options precede the intended objects. In a multi-object command, the supplied object order determines PDF order. Confirm support and placement in the installed help output.
