Most FFmpeg concat errors come from one of four separate problems: a malformed playlist, inaccessible file paths, lesson files with incompatible streams or time bases, or timestamps that break at file boundaries. For compatible lessons, use the concat demuxer and put -stream_loop -1 before the playlist input. If the files differ, normalize them or join them with the concat filter and re-encode. Then check YouTube ingest settings as a separate step.
Choose the right concat method first
The concat demuxer joins packet streams without re-encoding, so it is usually the lightest option for a playlist of lessons. It requires the files to have the same streams, codecs and time bases; matching file extensions or video codecs alone is not enough. FFmpeg states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Check that FFmpeg can parse the playlist
A concat playlist is a text script, not a video file. A minimal manifest looks like this, with one file line per lesson:

ffconcat version 1.0

file 'lesson-02.mp4'For FFmpeg to auto-detect the format from the header, the first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, without leading spaces or a byte-order mark. Alternatively, select the demuxer explicitly in the command. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping; follow the official concat script syntax.
- Confirm the manifest’s spelling, first line and line endings. If you rely on auto-detection, use the
.ffconcatsuffix. - Check that every listed path exists, is readable by the account running FFmpeg, and is interpreted from the expected working directory.
- For absolute paths or paths outside FFmpeg’s safe subset, try
-safe 0as an input option. Use it only with a playlist you trust: it relaxes path safety checks, but does not repair malformed lines.
A typical input form is -f concat -safe 0 -i lessons.ffconcat. An “unknown directive” error points toward playlist syntax; “cannot open” errors more often indicate a path, permissions or working-directory problem.
Compare the lesson files’ streams
Inspect each file with ffprobe before choosing stream copy. Compare stream count and order, codec, time base, frame rate, dimensions, pixel format, audio layout, start times and duration. Files that look alike in a media player may still have incompatible stream parameters.

- If the streams, codecs and time bases match, test the concat demuxer with
-c copy. - If they differ, make normalized intermediate files with matching properties, or use the concat filter with explicit stream mapping and re-encoding.
- If errors happen only at joins, inspect muxer warnings and the audio/video start times and durations. A boundary failure is not necessarily a playlist parsing failure.
Stream copy avoids another encoding pass, but it is not a universal solution: incompatible packet parameters or timestamps can still cause output errors, freezes or artifacts. Re-encoding a test sequence can help determine whether the failure is at the boundary rather than in the manifest.
Loop the full playlist as one input
Put -stream_loop -1 before the playlist’s -i. FFmpeg defines -1 as looping the input indefinitely; placing the option after that input will not apply it to the playlist. Consult the FFmpeg main options documentation.

If you want to try packet copy, replace the encoder options with -c copy only when the inputs and output muxer support those streams and timestamps. Test a finite run before leaving a continuous stream unattended. Looping does not remove hard cuts or gaps in the lesson audio.
Check YouTube ingest separately
A concat command can complete while YouTube still rejects or reports an unhealthy stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. The guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.

These are platform recommendations for those resolution and frame-rate combinations, not universal bitrate settings; consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance for other output formats. Confirm that the output uses the correct stream URL and key in Live Control Room. YouTube documents creating and reusing custom stream keys in its stream key help page. A wrong key or destination is an ingest problem, not a concat playlist error.
Troubleshoot by the symptom

For an exact diagnosis, keep the FFmpeg version, operating system, command, media properties and complete error text together. FFmpeg’s online documentation may differ from an older installed build, so check the options supported by your local version.
