What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To stop dropped frames on YouTube Live, first check whether the encoder itself is struggling or whether its output is healthy but the outbound connection is not keeping up. Read YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and your encoder’s status, then change the setting or component the evidence points to. A viewer’s buffering complaint alone does not prove that your encoder is dropping frames.
1. Check stream health and encoder status
Open your stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check the health indicator, specific error messages, and real-time metrics. At the same time, look at your encoder’s own status. YouTube’s dashboard reports stream health and metrics; use those signals rather than assuming every playback problem has the same cause. YouTube explains its live stream metrics.
Note when the problem occurs and what the messages say. If the encoder reports dropped frames or its output looks and sounds poor, investigate the encoder and the sources feeding it. If the encoder output appears healthy, move on to outbound connectivity.
2. If the encoder output looks or sounds bad, check the computer and sources
Review encoder errors and software state
Check the encoder’s error or statistics panel for warnings, and make sure you are using a current encoder version. An outdated or malfunctioning encoder can complicate diagnosis; updating it is a sensible check, not proof that version age caused the drops.

Check CPU load and source quality
Look at CPU load while the stream is running, especially during demanding scenes. Also inspect the video and audio sources: poor source quality can make the output look or sound bad even if the connection is not dropping frames.
Compare the live output with a local archive
If you record locally, review the recording around the time of the problem. A poor local archive or poor encoder preview points you toward the computer, encoder, or sources. If the encoder and archive show no problem, YouTube lists trying a different encoder as a diagnostic step. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.

3. If the encoder looks healthy, test the outbound connection
An encoder can produce a healthy-looking output while the connection sending it to YouTube is unstable or insufficient. Run an upload connection test and compare its result with what your encoder and Live Control Room report. A high advertised download speed does not establish that the outbound connection is reliable.
If the test identifies a connection issue, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider (ISP). If Wi-Fi stability is in question, compare a wired Ethernet connection with Wi-Fi as a diagnostic test; a cable is not a guaranteed fix for encoder, source, or other network problems. YouTube’s troubleshooting page covers outbound connection testing and ISP follow-up.

4. Match bitrate and stream settings to your profile
Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ranges, not minimums or guarantees that a particular connection will sustain the stream. Choose a profile your measured upload connection can maintain reliably; lowering resolution or frame rate can make it easier to reduce bitrate when the connection cannot sustain the current setting.
| H.264 video profile | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply the H.264 ranges above to those codecs. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable codec and profile; specifications can change.

Settings to check in the encoder
- Bitrate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Codec and frame rate: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and up to 60 fps. Follow the current settings table for your chosen codec and resolution.
These settings establish a suitable stream profile; they do not compensate for an unstable upload connection or overloaded encoder.

Test with movement and audio similar to the actual stream. A mostly static test may not reveal what happens during fast motion or a more demanding scene. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” — YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”.

6. Separate dropped frames from viewer buffering
Dropped frames are a sender-side symptom to diagnose through encoder status, stream health, and the outbound connection. Viewer buffering is a playback issue and does not by itself establish that your encoder is dropping frames. Latency affects the read-ahead buffer: lower latency leaves viewers with less buffer and can increase playback buffering. Check YouTube’s guidance on live stream latency before changing latency to address viewer reports.
7. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Encoder output looks or sounds poor, or the encoder reports errors | Review encoder errors and software version, CPU load, audio/video sources, and the local archive. If those checks reveal no problem, try a different encoder. |
| Encoder output appears healthy, but the stream has a health issue | Test outbound upload connectivity. If the test identifies a problem, contact your ISP. |
| Only some viewers report buffering | Do not assume the encoder is dropping frames. Check stream health and consider whether latency settings leave viewers too little read-ahead buffer. |
| Problems appear only during demanding scenes | Repeat a representative test, watch CPU load and stream health, and verify that the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate fit the connection. |
For a useful comparison, change one relevant factor at a time where practical—for example, reduce bitrate or compare wired and Wi-Fi connections—and observe both encoder and Live Control Room indicators during a realistic test. This is a troubleshooting method, not a guarantee that any single adjustment will fix the cause.
