Run the visual test, review the build’s diffs, and approve only the snapshots whose changes are intentional. In Percy, approving a snapshot accepts its new appearance as the baseline for future comparisons; an unexplained or unintended difference should be investigated and fixed, not approved.
Approve Percy changes one snapshot at a time
- Run your configured Percy test. Use the command and integration configured for your project. For example, Percy’s Cypress guide shows
npx percy exec -- cypress run; that is an example, not a universal command for every setup. See Percy’s visual testing guide. - Open the resulting build in Percy. Inspect the visual comparisons and highlighted differences. Check the affected page state and viewport against the code or design change expected in this build.
- Decide for each changed snapshot. If the difference is the intended result, approve that snapshot to make its appearance the baseline. If it looks like a regression, investigate and fix the UI, then run the test again.
- Approve only what is ready. Percy documents snapshot-level approval, which lets reviewers accept selected snapshots as baselines without approving the whole build. This capability was announced in Percy’s changelog on June 24, 2023: Percy changelog.
Review the current Percy interface and your project’s permissions when exact controls or account-specific behavior matter; the documented workflow does not establish every current UI label or permission setup.
Choose whether to approve, wait, or fix
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The visual change matches an intended UI update | Approve the affected snapshot as the new baseline. |
| The difference is unexpected or could be a regression | Do not approve it to clear the build. Investigate, fix the UI, and run the build again. |
| Some snapshots are reviewed, but others still need attention | Use snapshot-level approval for the ready snapshots; leave the rest for review rather than accepting the complete build. |
| The difference appears to come from changing content or inconsistent capture conditions | Stabilize the test environment or mask/exclude the dynamic area where appropriate, then review a fresh comparison. |
Keep visual comparisons useful
Percy compares captured snapshots against existing baselines. A reliable comparison depends on repeatable captures as well as careful review. Percy recommends using a controlled server environment, fixed viewports, and stable configuration; dynamic content may need masking or exclusion. See Percy’s visual testing best practices.
- Keep the server environment and viewport consistent between runs.
- Investigate dynamic content that produces noisy diffs; mask or exclude it when appropriate.
- Review baseline changes deliberately. Approval changes what future comparisons treat as expected.
- Use functional tests to verify behavior too: a visual comparison checks appearance and does not replace functional testing.
Understand approval carry-forward
Percy’s changelog documents that approved snapshots carry forward between builds for the life of a branch, and that a “changes requested” snapshot status is reflected in build status and carries forward on that branch. These are documented feature notes, not a guarantee about every current project’s CI rules or configuration. If a build status affects a merge or deployment, check the current settings for your project. See Percy’s changelog.
