First verify which URL and authentication state Chrome reached, then check whether the app had rendered its authenticated content before capture. If the page’s DOM contains the content but the image does not, investigate viewport, clipping, CSS visibility, and environment differences instead of changing launch flags at random.
Diagnose the page before changing Chrome flags
A login click or success signal does not prove the screenshot was taken on the intended authenticated route. A single-page app may also need to fetch data and render after the browser’s navigation milestone. Start by gathering evidence from the page immediately before capture.
- Record the final
location.hrefafter login and redirects. - Check the document title and whether the expected authenticated app root is present.
- Inspect the DOM, console messages, and page errors.
- Record the viewport, screenshot dimensions, and any clip rectangle.
- Compare the same app state in a visible browser if possible, keeping the browser and environment consistent.
Chrome supports remote DevTools inspection of a headless target, and its --dump-dom option outputs the DOM after scripts have run. See Chrome’s headless documentation for the relevant diagnostics.
Check the route and session state
If the final URL is a login page, error page, or unexpected route, trace redirects and confirm that the automation is navigating to the right destination. Make sure login and capture use the same browser context and that the authenticated route retains its session. Do not assume authentication failed merely because the screenshot is blank; use the final URL and visible app state to establish what happened.

If you inject cookies manually, target the real site with its HTTP or HTTPS URL. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting reference notes that cookies cannot be set for about:blank; use the site URL instead: Puppeteer troubleshooting.
Wait for the app, not just the navigation
For a client-rendered app, a completed navigation does not necessarily mean its data requests and rendering are finished. Wait for a selector that appears only in the authenticated view, or use an explicit app-level readiness signal. A fixed delay can help determine whether timing is involved, but a content-based condition is usually a more meaningful capture trigger.

Chrome’s command-line screenshot and DOM capture support a --timeout delay. That only postpones capture; it does not prove the app is ready. Playwright’s visual comparison workflow takes screenshots until consecutive captures match, which can help stabilize a visual baseline, but it does not authenticate the user or verify the intended app state. Use the DOM and runtime errors to choose the next check
Inspect the post-script DOM with Chrome’s --dump-dom, or attach DevTools to the headless target. Also collect browser console messages and page errors through your automation framework. The result determines where to investigate:

- Expected app root is absent: check the route, session propagation, script loading, application data, and errors.
- Root exists but its content is missing: check app readiness and the data or rendering condition, then review runtime errors.
- DOM contains the expected content but the image is blank: check CSS visibility, viewport and clip bounds, and rendering or environment differences.
These are diagnostic branches, not proof that any one cause is responsible in your app.
Verify viewport, clip, and rendering environment
Set the window or viewport size explicitly and make sure the screenshot clip includes the app content. Chrome documents --window-size for command-line capture in its headless documentation. A narrow viewport, off-screen layout, or clip that excludes the app can produce an image that looks empty even when the page loaded.

If the same app state differs between headful and headless runs, compare the browser version, operating system or container, fonts and settings, viewport, and hardware. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors in its visual comparisons documentation. Investigate GPU or WebGL only when the app depends on them or your evidence points there; they are not a general explanation for blank post-login screenshots.
