A brief flash can happen while styles load; a screenshot that stays unstyled needs a check of the stylesheet requests and the affected elements’ styles. The exact cause depends on where the screenshot came from and what the browser reported.
Why a screenshot can show HTML without its styling
HTML and CSS play different roles in a rendered page. HTML provides structure and content; CSS supplies presentation. A browser can therefore display headings, links, and text even when a stylesheet is unavailable or its rules are not applied. CSS may be included in the HTML or fetched from external stylesheets, as MDN explains in its guide to how browsers load websites.
A plain-looking screenshot does not by itself identify the cause. The stylesheet might not have been requested or loaded, the capture could have happened before styles finished loading, or the rules could have loaded but failed to match or been overridden. A screenshot made by a crawler or service can also differ from what you see in your regular browser.
First identify where the screenshot came from
Compare it with the page in a browser
Open the same URL in an ordinary browser and wait for the page to finish loading. If it looks styled there but not in the screenshot, focus on the capture context and timing rather than assuming the page is broken for every visitor. If both are unstyled, inspect the page’s stylesheet requests and CSS rules.

If the image is from Google Search Console
In URL Inspection, open the tested-page details and choose “View tested page.” Google says this view can include a rendered screenshot, raw HTML, HTTP headers, JavaScript console output, and loaded page resources. Use those details together: the screenshot shows the result, while the other evidence can help locate a missing or unusable stylesheet. See Google’s URL Inspection tool help.
Check whether the stylesheet loaded
- Open the browser’s developer tools. In Chrome, open DevTools and inspect the Network panel or loaded resources while reloading the page. Look for the CSS files referenced by the page.
- Confirm whether each stylesheet request appears. A missing request may mean the stylesheet was not discovered or requested. If a request appears, inspect its response and whether the browser could use it. Do not assume a particular HTTP error without checking the actual response.
- Check the affected element’s rules. Select a representative heading, link, or container in the Elements panel. The Styles pane shows authored CSS rules; the Computed pane shows resolved values used by Chrome, including cascade winners and inherited values. Chrome documents these panels in its CSS inspection guide.
If there is no relevant stylesheet request, investigate how the CSS is referenced or whether the page’s HTML exposes the link to it. If the file loaded but the element still looks wrong, check whether a rule matches that element and whether another rule overrides it or leaves it inactive.

Tell a loading flash from a persistent problem
If the page briefly appears plain and then becomes styled, the screenshot may have captured a flash of unstyled content while styles were loading. If the screenshot remains plain, investigate whether CSS was discovered, fetched, and applied before capture. A capture service’s wait settings and the page’s loading behavior can affect what is visible at the moment of capture; the image alone cannot establish which occurred.
When only a crawler or screenshot service shows plain HTML
Compare the service’s result with the same URL in a browser, then examine whatever diagnostics the service provides, such as returned HTML, headers, console output, or loaded-resource information. Search Console documents those details for URL Inspection, but you should not assume every third-party capture tool exposes the same evidence. Without the page URL, screenshot source, and request or console details, it is not possible to name the specific root cause.

Does an unstyled screenshot prove Google cannot render the page?
No. A screenshot is one piece of evidence. For Search Console URL Inspection, check the tested page’s HTML, headers, console output, and loaded resources alongside the image.

Can I tell the exact cause without the page URL or browser diagnostics?
No. The stylesheet request and response, the capture source and timing, and the affected element’s rules are needed to distinguish the likely causes.
