For OBS on Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11, choose the GPU in Settings > System > Display > Graphics by adding C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe. OBS recommends High Performance for Game Capture and Window Capture, and Power Saving for Display Capture. Close OBS before changing this preference. This Windows setting determines which GPU runs OBS; it does not select the video encoder.
Choose the GPU for the way your picture enters OBS
First identify what OBS is capturing. OBS’s GPU Selection Guide, published April 24, 2023, gives different recommendations for different capture methods. Its specific recommendations concern Game Capture, Window Capture, and Display Capture; they do not establish a universal best GPU for every media-source or capture-card setup. The guidance is especially relevant to laptops and other multi-GPU Windows PCs. It is not a requirement to force OBS onto a discrete GPU in every setup. For a local video loop, use the capture method you actually configured, keep a stable setup, and change the GPU preference only when there is a reason to troubleshoot.
Set the Windows GPU preference
- Close OBS.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics in Windows.
- Add or browse for
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe. - Open the app’s graphics options and select High Performance for Game Capture or Window Capture, or Power Saving for Display Capture.
- Reopen OBS and test the actual scene and loop. If the picture is missing or performance worsens, return to Graphics settings and test the other available preference.
The executable path above is the default path specified in OBS’s guide; if OBS is installed elsewhere, browse to the executable in that installation instead. Windows’ names describe the GPU preference, not the encoder OBS will use.

Choose an encoder separately in OBS
The Windows graphics preference decides which GPU runs the OBS application. The encoder is selected separately in OBS’s Output settings. If the installed hardware and OBS expose a supported hardware encoder that fits your needs, choosing it can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Encoder availability varies by hardware and software support; do not assume a particular option will appear on every system. See OBS Hardware Encoding.
This does not mean a hardware encoder will improve every configuration, nor that you need a new GPU for a dedicated loop. OBS describes hardware encoding as generally recommended for performance, but the useful choice depends on the installed hardware, output requirements, and observed behavior. Select an available encoder in OBS, then check the resulting stream rather than treating the GPU brand or Windows preference as the encoder setting.

Match YouTube’s stream settings to the output
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; these are YouTube-published recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will deliver stable video. Consult the current table at YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring the target output.

These figures are YouTube’s recommendations in its encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. They are not independent measurements or a promise that any upload connection can sustain them. Use the values for the codec and resolution you are actually sending, and check YouTube’s current guidance for other frame rates and resolutions.

Test the loop before relying on it
- Start the local video loop and confirm OBS is capturing the intended source without a blank frame, stutter, or unexpected crop.
- Start a test stream and check YouTube’s stream health before treating the setup as ready. YouTube recommends testing the encoder before going live and monitoring health indicators.
- Watch OBS performance statistics during playback and streaming. Distinguish rendering overload from encoding overload before changing hardware or settings.
- If OBS reports overload, inspect resource use and reduce competing GPU work. OBS also suggests that Windows users can try running OBS as administrator for GPU overload; this is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Troubleshoot GPU selection and loop performance
- Game or window capture is blank: On a multi-GPU system, check that OBS is set to High Performance, close OBS before changing the Windows preference, then reopen and test. Ensure the OBS executable selected in Graphics is the one you actually launch.
- Display Capture is blank or unreliable: Check the Power Saving preference recommended by OBS for Display Capture. If changing it does not help, revert and investigate the capture setup rather than assuming a more powerful GPU is required.
- OBS shows rendering overload: Look for competing GPU workloads and reduce them, then retest the scene. A loop stream alone does not establish that a GPU upgrade is necessary.
- OBS shows encoding overload: Verify which encoder is selected and whether it is supported by the installed hardware. Test an available hardware encoder if appropriate, or reduce output demands and retest.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance; also verify that the connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate.
- A setting or encoder option is missing: Options depend on Windows version, installed GPU, OBS version, and encoder support. Do not follow NVIDIA-specific NVENC instructions as if they applied to every GPU. OBS’s advanced NVENC options page is specifically about NVIDIA and its OBS 31.0-era controls: Advanced NVENC Options (31.0).
