To make an OBS playlist overlay update, separate two jobs: play the YouTube playlist in a Browser Source, then make the displayed title or thumbnail read the active video and update when playback advances. A standard OBS Text Source is editable text; OBS’s documentation does not describe it as automatically tracking YouTube playlist changes.
Choose what should update
- Only the video: Add a playlist-capable player as an OBS Browser Source. The player, rather than a text label, handles playlist playback.
- The title or thumbnail too: Use a player or overlay that exposes the active video’s identity and redraws its metadata on each transition. A player can advance the video without synchronizing a separate title graphic.
- Both: Use one playlist-aware player/overlay that handles playback and current-video metadata, or connect a separate metadata overlay to the player state.
OBS’s Sources Guide describes Browser Sources as webpages in a scene and Text Sources as customizable text. It does not document automatic synchronization between a Text Source and YouTube playlist state.
Add a playlist-capable player to OBS
- In OBS, select the scene where the player should appear. In the Sources dock, select + → Browser (shown as Browser Source in some versions), then create or select a source.
- Enter the player or overlay webpage URL in its properties. Set the width and height to suit your canvas, then position and resize the source in the preview.
- Configure the player with the YouTube playlist URL and the desired starting item, order, and loop behavior. These controls belong to the player; adding a Browser Source alone does not create playlist logic.
- Arrange the source order in the Sources dock. OBS draws sources higher in the list above sources lower in the list, so move the overlay above the video or background if it is obscured.
OBS’s project wiki also documents creating a Browser Source by dragging a URL into OBS; source properties may be preconfigured through URL arguments in some cases.
Use a player that exposes the current video
One community example is OBS-Youtube-Player. Its README describes a browser-source player configured with a YouTube video or playlist URL, and documents options for the playlist’s starting index, looping, random playback, and showing the current song title or author. It is an independent project, not a built-in OBS feature.

Follow the project’s current README for its URL format and parameter names; do not assume that a parameter or embed behavior remains compatible with every current OBS and YouTube setup. The README describes the project’s capabilities, but does not establish that autoplay, playlist advancement, or metadata updates will work reliably in every configuration. Test it in a scene before using it live.
Make the title or thumbnail follow playback
If the player advances but the graphic stays unchanged, the video player and metadata overlay are not connected. Choose a player/overlay that exposes the active video’s title or identifier and updates its display on each transition. If you build a custom browser overlay, its page needs to detect the active video change and redraw the title or thumbnail; a static OBS Text Source does not supply that connection on its own.

Some third-party players advertise current-title display, including OBS-Youtube-Player. Treat that as a feature claim to verify in your own setup: confirm the displayed item changes after an actual playlist transition, rather than relying on the option name alone.
Test before going live
- Preview at least two consecutive playlist items and confirm that playback advances in the expected order.
- Check the title and thumbnail separately after the transition; video advancement alone does not prove that the overlay is synchronized.
- Confirm the chosen loop or random behavior and the overlay’s visibility and placement.
- Reload the Browser Source and check whether playback and metadata recover as intended. A source reload may expose behavior that is not apparent during a single uninterrupted preview.
Playlist behavior can depend on the player and YouTube embed conditions, so the result in your own OBS scene is the meaningful compatibility check.

OBS documents Browser Sources, Text Sources, and VLC playlist support in its Sources Guide. VLC support here means local-media playlist capability; it should not be treated as a way to play a YouTube playlist.
Common problems and fixes
- The video advances, but the title remains unchanged: The player and metadata overlay are not synchronized. Use a player/overlay with current-video metadata support or add transition detection and redraw behavior to the browser page.
- The title changes, but the video does not advance: Check the playlist URL and the player’s playlist, starting-index, and loop settings. OBS’s source configuration does not control YouTube playlist state.
- The player or overlay is hidden: Move it higher in the Sources list. Resize or crop it with OBS transforms as needed.
- Someone suggested a VLC playlist: Check whether your media are local files. OBS’s documented VLC playlist support is not a YouTube playlist player.
- You have a webpage URL but no source yet: Add it as a Browser Source, or use the URL drag-and-drop method described in the OBS wiki. Check the created source’s properties and sizing afterward.
When a promo widget is enough
If your goal is to promote a selected recent upload rather than mirror the next item in an existing playlist, Meld’s vendor page describes a YouTube Promo Widget that displays a selected latest upload for 30 seconds and repeats every 10 minutes. It says the widget can be used in OBS through Spark Plug as a Browser Source, and that a new video URL can be set with Meld Spark and persists between sessions. Those are vendor-described behaviors, not automatic playlist-next detection; check the vendor’s current page for availability and terms before relying on them: Meld YouTube Promo Widget.
