Make each state happen on purpose, verify that the expected interface has rendered, and only then capture it. Control the API response or network failure so the test is repeatable; pair the screenshot with assertions that check the message and recovery action. A screenshot can reveal a visual regression, but it cannot by itself prove that a control works or that assistive technology receives the right information.
Build a repeatable state test
For each loading, empty, or error state, set up the data or network outcome that produces it, assert the user-visible result, and capture the page or component. This order matters: a screenshot taken during an uncontrolled transition may record an intermediate render rather than the state you meant to test. Cypress advises confirming the page has updated before snapshotting; Playwright documents ways to monitor and modify browser traffic.
- Control the outcome. Return a fixed success response, an empty result, a delayed response, or a failure response using a fixture or network interception.
- Trigger the relevant UI. Navigate to the page or perform the action that requests the data.
- Assert the intended state. Check the actual loading indicator, empty-state copy, error message, or recovery control—not just that a container exists.
- Capture after the assertion passes. Choose a component screenshot for a focused state check, or a full-page capture when the surrounding layout is part of the requirement.
- For visual regression, compare and review. Inspect image differences against an approved baseline and update it only when the change is intentional.
Use a fixed viewport and consistent browser and operating-system environment. Keep test data and time-dependent content stable, and disable or wait out animations where appropriate. Cypress identifies environment, viewport, time, test data, and animation as sources of visual-test instability.
Test the loading state
A loading state is observable only while the request is pending. Make that pending period deterministic: intercept the request and hold its response until the test has confirmed the loading indicator or message. Capture then if loading is a meaningful design checkpoint. Fulfill the response afterward and assert that the resulting content appears, so the test covers both the pending and completed states.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A fixed sleep is a weak substitute for an assertion: timing varies, and the capture can happen too early or after loading has disappeared. Wait for the user-visible condition that defines the checkpoint, and separately verify the post-response result.
Test the empty state
Return a valid empty result from the endpoint or data source that feeds the view. Assert the specific empty-state message and any expected next action, such as a control to create or add an item, before capturing. A blank container is not evidence that the intended empty state works; define the copy, action, and layout the product should show.

Fixtures and network stubbing help ensure the same data is rendered on each run. Cypress’s visual-testing guidance recommends this approach for consistent snapshots.
Test the error state and recovery path
Make the request fail in a controlled way, or return the failure response the application is expected to handle. Assert the displayed error and the recovery path—such as a retry control or other in-flow action—then capture the state. Include form errors and other meaningful failures, not only an error page. Cypress’s accessibility guidance specifically warns that testing only initial or final page loads can miss cases such as error states in forms.

Where behavior matters, test the recovery action as well: activate it and assert the expected result. A screenshot of a retry button does not establish that retrying works.
Choose a capture and comparison approach
Capture and comparison are separate capabilities. Cypress documents that its built-in cy.screenshot() captures images but does not compare them; image comparison requires a plugin or integration. Playwright documents the toHaveScreenshot() assertion for page or element screenshots.

| Question | Cypress documentation | Playwright documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Control network outcomes | Fixtures and network stubbing are recommended for stable rendered data. | Network documentation covers monitoring and modifying browser traffic, including mocking. |
| Capture and compare | cy.screenshot() captures; comparison requires a plugin or integration. |
Test assertions include toHaveScreenshot() for page or element screenshots. |
| Element or page scope | Choose the relevant checkpoint; visual-testing guidance favors deliberate checkpoints to limit unrelated changes. | Page API and screenshot assertions document page and element screenshot workflows. |
These documented differences are useful capability checks, not a universal framework recommendation. Pick the workflow that fits how your app controls requests, waits for rendered states, and reviews changed images.
Keep visual tests useful rather than noisy
- Stabilize the environment: keep browser, operating system, viewport, time, and test data consistent.
- Control motion: disable animations or wait for them to finish when motion is not what the test is evaluating.
- Use the right boundary: capture a component when the component is the subject; capture the full page when page layout is the subject.
- Limit checkpoints deliberately: each additional screenshot that changes needs human review.
- Review every baseline change: a diff may be an intended redesign or a regression. Approve a new baseline only after confirming the visible change is expected.
What a screenshot cannot verify
Pixels can show that a message or control looks different, but they do not establish that a control works, that text is exposed meaningfully to assistive technology, or that a user can complete the flow. Pair visual checks with application-specific assertions for button names, recovery actions, keyboard interactions, and the meaning of status or error messages. Playwright’s ARIA snapshot assertions can check accessible structure against an expected template. Cypress likewise presents accessibility testing as a companion to visual testing and cautions that automated scans cannot prove full accessibility or usability.

Troubleshoot unreliable state screenshots
- The screenshot shows a spinner or stale content instead of the target: the response was not controlled, or capture happened before the UI updated. Hold or stub the response and assert the target state before capture.
- An empty-state image is blank: the test may only have established that no records appeared. Assert the intended copy and action as well as the layout.
- Snapshots differ between runs: check for changing test data, dates, viewport, browser or operating-system differences, and unfinished animations.
- A visual diff passes while the flow is broken: image comparison does not prove behavior. Add assertions that exercise the action and verify its outcome.
- A Cypress screenshot is not compared automatically:
cy.screenshot()captures only; use a comparison plugin or integration if image-diff testing is required. - A baseline changed: inspect the diff and determine whether the visual change is expected before accepting it.

If you need a screenshot outside your test runner, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API takes a URL and returns an image or PDF; use the request below for a page capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
