You can save a recent clip with OBS Replay Buffer while leaving your YouTube stream running: enable the buffer in Settings → Output, assign its own Save Replay control, and use that—not Stop Streaming—when you want a clip. Replay Buffer saves footage locally; it is separate from both OBS media-source looping and YouTube’s viewer-facing DVR. Test the setup before relying on it during a public broadcast.

What Replay Buffer does—and what “loop stream” can mean

OBS Replay Buffer continuously keeps a recent segment available to save locally. When you trigger Save Replay, OBS writes that buffered segment to the recording path. It does not require stopping the YouTube output as part of the save operation, but it does add work for your computer, so it cannot guarantee that every system will stream without dropped frames or interruption.

“YouTube loop stream” can refer to different things. OBS’s Media Source Loop option restarts a media file after playback ends; it does not control whether the YouTube broadcast stays live indefinitely. YouTube DVR lets viewers pause or rewind a live stream; it does not save a local OBS replay. Keep source looping, broadcast continuity, viewer DVR, and local Replay Buffer clips distinct.

Configure Replay Buffer separately from stream controls

  1. Open Settings → Output. Enable Replay Buffer, then choose a Maximum Replay Time. Set a Maximum Memory limit if the installed OBS version exposes one. A longer retention period keeps more recent content available but can consume more resources; there is no universally safe duration or memory setting for every computer.
  2. Choose a recording path and filename convention. Set a destination that you can find after the broadcast and a naming pattern that helps identify clips. Confirm you have enough storage for the files you expect to keep.
  3. Open Settings → Hotkeys. Assign distinct, memorable controls to Start Replay Buffer, Stop Replay Buffer, and Save Replay. Keep these separate from Start Streaming and Stop Streaming controls so you are less likely to end the broadcast accidentally.
  4. Start the buffer before the moment you want to capture. If your OBS version offers an option to start the buffer automatically when streaming, verify it is present and behaves as expected rather than assuming it is enabled.
  5. Start the YouTube stream normally. Confirm OBS and YouTube show the expected live preview or status, then use Save Replay when you want to capture the recent segment. Do not use Stop Streaming to save a replay.

Choose settings for your workflow and computer

Set the replay time according to how far back you need to recover content, not by copying a duration intended for another setup. Consider the available memory and encoder capacity, whether recording uses stream settings or a separate recording configuration, and how quickly you need to locate and edit the saved file.

In Advanced output mode, OBS provides separate stream and recording options. Choosing recording settings that differ from the stream can add resource demands. If the computer is already near its limits, a longer buffer or additional recording work may affect performance; the safe choice depends on your hardware and the other tasks OBS is handling. OBS does not provide a universal best duration or hardware configuration for this use.

Test before using it on a public broadcast

  1. Use a local test or an unlisted/private stream to check the whole workflow.
  2. Confirm the stream remains live when you press Save Replay.
  3. Check OBS performance indicators during the test and watch for dropped frames or other signs of strain.
  4. Open the configured recording folder and verify that the replay exists, plays, and is usable in your editing workflow.
  5. Repeat the test with the intended replay time and recording settings. Change settings if the stream or saved clip is unreliable.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • No clip appears: Confirm Replay Buffer was started before the moment, check the recording path, and verify the assigned key or control is for Save Replay.
  • The stream stops when you try to save: Check the hotkey assignments and make sure you triggered Save Replay, not Stop Streaming. Keep the controls distinct.
  • The saved clip is shorter than expected: The buffer must have been running long enough to retain the requested segment. Start it earlier and test again.
  • The stream stutters or OBS performance worsens: Replay capture and recording settings can consume additional resources. Test a shorter retention time or less demanding recording configuration, then verify stream performance again.
  • The media file repeats, but the broadcast behavior is not what you expected: The Media Source Loop option repeats that source; it does not itself guarantee continuous YouTube output. Check the stream status separately.
  • Viewers can rewind, but no local clip was saved: YouTube DVR and OBS Replay Buffer are different features. Use OBS’s Save Replay control and check its recording folder for a local file.
