Whether that causes an overage depends on the outbound transfer allowance pooled across your team’s Droplets—not just the allowance attached to the streaming Droplet. DigitalOcean bills Droplet outbound transfer above that pool at $0.01 per GiB. Check current Droplet allowances and your team’s billing view before running a stream continuously.
DigitalOcean bandwidth: the limits that matter
For continuous YouTube streaming, distinguish three things: the monthly outbound transfer allowance, the team-wide pool of allowances and usage, and the Droplet’s network throughput ceiling. They describe different limits. The monthly allowance is data over a billing period; throughput is a rate at a point in time.
| Limit or charge | How it works |
|---|---|
| Outbound transfer allowance | Each Droplet plan contributes an allowance to a pool shared by the customer team’s Droplets. DigitalOcean’s current pricing page lists allowances starting at 500 GiB/month; its listed 1 GiB Basic plan includes 1,000 GiB/month. Allowances depend on the selected plan. See current plan details. |
| Team transfer pool | Droplet allowances and usage are cumulative across the team. A streaming Droplet can use more than its own plan’s allowance if other Droplets leave room in the pool. Unused transfer does not roll into another month or move between teams. |
| Overage | DigitalOcean documents a charge of $0.01 per GiB for Droplet outbound transfer above the pool. Actual overage depends on the team’s combined allowances and usage. Review DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing rules. |
| Throughput ceiling | DigitalOcean lists maximum rates of 2 Gbps for standard non-GPU Droplets, 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets, and 10 Gbps over public connections for GPU Droplets (25 Gbps over VPC). These are rate ceilings, not monthly data quotas; traffic above applicable throughput limits may be rate limited. Check Droplet limits. |
Traffic sent from a Droplet over its public network interface counts toward the team pool, including IPv6 traffic. Droplet-to-Droplet VPC traffic uses the private interface. Inbound transfer to Droplets is free. In a typical encoder or relay setup, the Droplet sends the ingest stream to YouTube; YouTube delivers the stream to viewers. Viewer playback is not the same as outbound streaming traffic from your Droplet.

outbound GiB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds streamed × 1,000,000 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,073,741,824
Using decimal Mbps and binary GiB, 1 Mbps streamed continuously for 30 days is about 302 GiB; 10 Mbps is about 3,018 GiB. This is arithmetic, not a DigitalOcean usage guarantee. Protocol overhead, reconnects, other Droplet workloads and simultaneous backup streams can increase actual transfer. Refine the estimate against measured team usage and projections in the DigitalOcean billing view, which is updated daily.

YouTube bitrate reference points
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends these H.264 video bitrates. The values are recommendations, not a promise that every stream will use exactly that amount.
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Approximate payload for 30 continuous days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 4 Mbps | About 1,207 GiB |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | About 1,811 GiB |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | About 3,018 GiB |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | About 3,622 GiB |
Payload figures apply the same 30-day calculation above and exclude overhead and additional traffic. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. Its network tips recommend leaving 20% upload headroom above the total streaming bitrate. If primary and backup encoders transmit simultaneously, count both streams and ensure their combined bitrate fits the available outbound capacity. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations and YouTube’s streaming tips explain its guidance.

Worked example: a 10 Mbps stream all month
Suppose one Droplet sends a 10 Mbps H.264 stream continuously for a 30-day month. The video payload is approximately 3,018 GiB. Compared with a hypothetical 500 GiB allowance in isolation, that is 2,518 GiB more; at $0.01 per GiB, the illustrative overage would be $25.18.
That is not a quoted bill or a prediction for a real team. A 500 GiB allowance is a plan-level contribution, not necessarily the team’s total pool. Other Droplets can contribute allowances or use transfer, and the stream itself may incur overhead. Calculate against the team’s actual allowance and projected use.

Check the stream’s eligibility and capacity
DigitalOcean bandwidth is only one part of the setup. YouTube says live streaming requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days. Confirm eligibility before provisioning a server or scheduling a continuous stream. Review YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements.
Before going live, use a representative test rather than assuming the Droplet’s rated throughput will guarantee a healthy stream. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Confirm that the encoder’s total bitrate—including any concurrent backup—fits within available outbound capacity, retain the suggested headroom, and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators during the test and event.

How to estimate your own monthly cost exposure
- Identify the plan and allowance. Check the current plan details for every Droplet in the team; do not treat the streaming Droplet’s contribution as the entire pool.
- Set the stream bitrate. Use the encoder’s configured total bitrate, including audio, and account for both primary and backup streams if they run at once.
- Calculate streaming hours. Apply the formula above to the hours you expect to stream in the billing period. Continuous 24/7 operation for 30 days is 720 hours.
- Add other outbound use. Include other public-interface traffic from every Droplet in the team. Public IPv6 traffic counts; VPC traffic between Droplets uses the private interface.
- Compare with team-level projected usage. Use the DigitalOcean billing view and its daily-updated projections to compare expected total outbound transfer with the combined allowance.
- Allow for overage uncertainty. DigitalOcean documents $0.01 per GiB beyond the team pool; actual billed transfer can differ from payload arithmetic because of overhead and other traffic.
- Check throughput separately. Verify the Droplet’s applicable network rate ceiling and make sure the total simultaneous stream bitrate fits available outbound bandwidth with headroom.
