You can stream a prerecorded loop to YouTube Live from a Linux mini PC by sending a live encoder feed from OBS Studio or FFmpeg. The video loops on the computer; YouTube receives it as a live broadcast. For a graphical setup, OBS is the more approachable route. FFmpeg is an alternative for a fixed file and command-line workflow. “Headless” needs a qualification: OBS documents a launch option to start streaming, but its Linux guidance does not establish a universally supported, fully headless service setup.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- A Linux mini PC with a compatible graphics stack and enough sustained encoding capacity for your chosen output. OBS’s Linux installation guidance requires OpenGL 3.3 or later; that alone does not guarantee a particular computer can encode smoothly. Check the distribution, GPU and driver, available encoder options, cooling, and network reliability before relying on it. See OBS’s Linux installation guidance.
- A local video or audio file you have the right to stream continuously. Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate issues; permission to use a file does not guarantee monetization or prevent a platform claim.
- A stable wired or wireless internet connection with upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate, plus time for a private or unlisted test.
YouTube Live is not simply a playlist setting. An encoder sends video and audio to the stream URL using the stream key provided in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or log. YouTube says a compromised key can be reset in Live Control Room; its guidance describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.”
Set up a looping stream with OBS Studio
1. Create the YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel, then create or schedule a stream.
- Choose the visibility, title, description, and other broadcast details. For initial testing, use private or unlisted visibility where appropriate.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream’s encoder settings. Keep the key private; enter it only into the encoder’s stream settings.
2. Install OBS and add the media
- Install OBS Studio using the instructions for your Linux distribution on the official OBS Linux installation page. Confirm the system meets the OpenGL 3.3 requirement and that OBS starts correctly.
- Create a scene, then add a Media Source and select the local file. OBS’s Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; supported playback still depends on the installed system and file details. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Enable Loop in the source properties. Review Show nothing when playback ends and the source’s restart behavior so the scene behaves as intended at the end of playback. Check OBS’s audio meter and listen to the output; a file can play correctly while its audio is silent, too quiet, or unexpectedly loud.
- If the source is video, fit it to the canvas and inspect the result for cropping, black bars, or unintended scaling. Add other scene elements only if they are needed for the broadcast.
3. Configure YouTube output settings
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. If your OBS build exposes RTMPS, prefer it for a standard encoder workflow, as YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Open Settings > Output and choose an encoder actually available on this Linux installation. H.264 is a practical starting point when supported. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work, but its presence and sustained performance depend on the mini PC’s GPU, driver, and OBS build.
- Set a conservative output resolution and frame rate first, such as 720p at 30 fps. In the video encoder settings, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval where configurable. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. The exact bitrate recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.
For two H.264 reference points in YouTube’s published table, 720p30 is listed at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended; 1080p30 is listed at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a performance guarantee for your mini PC. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the settings matching your chosen codec and output.
4. Start and validate the broadcast
- Start streaming in OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public.
- Let the stream run through a complete loop. Confirm that the next playback begins, the scene does not go blank at the file’s end, and both picture and sound remain correct.
- Test with media representative of what you intend to broadcast: motion and audio can expose network or encoding problems that a static or silent test misses. YouTube recommends testing with similar content and monitoring stream health.
- Keep upload bandwidth in reserve. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and advises accounting for primary and backup streams where applicable; see its streaming tips.
- Before depending on unattended operation, test what happens after a network interruption, power loss, encoder exit, and reboot. The reviewed OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish that a setup will resume automatically or remain live indefinitely.
What “headless” means for OBS on Linux
OBS documents launch parameters including --startstreaming, --profile, --collection, and --scene. These allow a configured OBS installation to select a profile or scene and start streaming when launched. They do not, by themselves, show that every OBS Linux build runs as a fully headless service without a graphical session. See OBS’s launch-parameters documentation.

If you administer the mini PC remotely, distinguish remote access from headless operation: a computer controlled over SSH may still be running a graphical session for OBS. The official materials cited here do not supply a complete headless deployment recipe or establish that a particular display server, virtual display, service configuration, or restart method is always required or sufficient. Verify the arrangement on your chosen distribution and test recovery rather than assuming the launch flag handles it.
Command-line alternative: loop the file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely. This can suit a single fixed program when you want command-line control instead of OBS scenes. The option does not determine a suitable output codec, bitrate, audio mapping, or YouTube endpoint; those choices depend on the source file, FFmpeg build, hardware, and target settings. See FFmpeg’s documentation.

A universal copy-and-paste command would be misleading without those details. If you stream-copy, the source codecs and timing must be appropriate for the output. If you re-encode, confirm the CPU or GPU can sustain the selected codec and bitrate. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the output protocol you plan to use, and keep the stream key out of shell history and process listings where practical. Test the exact command with your actual file and review YouTube’s preview and stream health before relying on it.
RTMPS or HLS?
For the ordinary encoder workflow described here, YouTube recommends RTMPS. HLS is not a simpler way to loop a local file: it uses segmented uploads and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. YouTube’s HLS requirements include HTTPS, TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and POST/PUT requests. Choose HLS only when the codec or workflow you need calls for it. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: Confirm live-stream eligibility, the selected server URL, and the stream key. If the key may have been exposed or is incorrect, reset or copy it again from Live Control Room.
- The preview appears, but video is choppy or drops frames: Reduce output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then test again. Check encoder load, thermals, driver and hardware-encoder availability, and upload stability. A bitrate recommendation does not mean the mini PC can encode it.
- The stream starts but ends or goes blank at the file boundary: Recheck the Media Source’s Loop setting and its end-of-playback behavior. Observe a complete loop in the test broadcast.
- The picture works but audio is absent or wrong: Verify that the selected source contains an audio track, that the source is not muted, and that OBS’s audio meter moves during playback. Listen to the stream preview or test recording.
- The broadcast stops after the computer or network restarts: A launch parameter is not a guarantee of automatic reconnection or recovery. Test the specific startup and reconnect behavior you need; plan for monitoring or manual intervention unless your tested setup demonstrates otherwise.
- The file will not play correctly: Check OBS’s supported media formats and the codecs actually available on the Linux system. Try a known-good test file before changing the live output settings.
Copyright and continuous-stream checks
Only loop content you have permission to use for a YouTube live broadcast. A license should cover the relevant rights and intended use, including continuous or repeated streaming and, if applicable, monetization. Do not assume that a file being available online, or a license permitting ordinary playback, also permits a 24/7 live loop. YouTube may still apply its own copyright and monetization policies.
Before publishing, check the channel’s live-stream eligibility, stream visibility, metadata, audio levels, and loop behavior. A complete private or unlisted trial is the safest way to catch technical problems before an unattended broadcast.
