Sign in to the Substack account with an eligible subscription, open the post, and use your device’s built-in screenshot controls. If the post still shows a paywall, first confirm that you’re signed into the right account and that its subscription tier includes the post. A screenshot captures only content you’re authorized to view; it does not change your access or reuse rights.
Confirm you can view the post
- Open the post in the Substack app or on the web and sign in with the account associated with the publication subscription. Substack says audience-specific content can be available on web and in the app according to subscription status (Substack audience-specific content guidance).
- Check that the post itself is visible before taking a screenshot. A free subscriber may still see a paywall on a post reserved for paying subscribers; the account must have the eligible paid tier (Substack paid-post guidance for Android).
If you need to sign in again, Substack documents email verification links and password login options in its app login help.
Take a screenshot on your device
These shortcuts capture what is displayed; the exact controls and save behavior can vary by device, operating-system version, browser, and app.
| Device | Capture | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11 | Press Windows logo key + Shift + S, then choose a capture area. Save the snip in Snipping Tool. | Use the Snipping Tool preview to review or save the capture. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions. |
| Android | On many phones, press Power + Volume Down together. If that combination does not work, check the phone maker’s instructions. | A preview appears after capture. See Google’s Android screenshot help. |
| iPhone with Face ID | Quickly press and release Side button + Volume Up. | Screenshots are saved in Photos. On an iPhone with a Home button, use the applicable Side or Top button + Home button combination. See Apple’s iPhone instructions. |
| Mac | Press Shift-Command-4 to select an area, or Shift-Command-3 for the full screen. | The cited instructions give Desktop as the default save location. See Microsoft’s screenshot and screen-clipping instructions. |
Capture a long post
A normal screenshot captures the displayed screen or selected region, not necessarily the entire article. For a long post, use a scrolling or full-page capture when your device and app or browser support it. Otherwise, scroll through the post and take successive screenshots with enough overlap to keep the sections in order.

- iPhone: Safari supports full-page captures on supported pages. After taking a screenshot, check whether the full-page option is available; it is not universal across every app or page.
- Android: Scrolling screenshots work on Android 12 and later on most scrollable screens, but availability can depend on the device and screen.
See Apple’s iPhone screenshot guide and Google’s Android screenshot guide for their platform-specific limits.
If the paywall is still there
- Verify the signed-in account. Check the email or profile shown in Substack and make sure it matches the account that holds the subscription.
- Check the subscription tier. Being logged in does not guarantee access: the post may be for paid subscribers while the account is free, or may require a different eligible tier.
- Reopen the post in the app or web version. Substack’s audience-specific material is available according to subscription status on those surfaces; confirm you are viewing the post while signed in.
- Do not try to bypass the paywall. Capture the post only after it is available to your account.
Review the image before sharing
Check the saved screenshot for account details, profile information, or other private material around the post. Crop or redact unrelated details where appropriate using your device’s editing controls. Taking a screenshot does not itself grant permission to redistribute the post; copyright, subscription terms, and reuse rules may depend on the circumstances and jurisdiction.
