A screenshot API can differ from your Chrome window even when both open the same URL. The usual causes are a different browser or host, viewport and device settings, page timing or state, or screenshot options. Match those conditions in a controlled order; if the difference remains, ask the API provider which browser version and rendering environment it uses. The API is not named here, so its specific browser build and host cannot be established.

Why matching the URL is not enough

A hosted capture may run in a different Chrome build, operating system, font environment, graphics stack, browser profile, or state than your local browser. Chrome can also run headlessly, without a visible browser window. An API provider may expose some capture settings but not all details of its environment. Chrome’s headless documentation and the provider-specific ScreenshotAPI request reference illustrate why the URL alone does not define equivalent conditions.

These are diagnostic possibilities, not proof that a particular API uses a different browser or host. Check the provider’s documentation or ask support for its browser version, operating system, font availability, and rendering environment if those details matter.

Check the conditions in this order

1. Match viewport and device emulation before navigation

Set the same CSS viewport width and height in Chrome and the API request. Then compare device scale factor, mobile mode, touch behavior, and user agent, if the service exposes them. A named phone preset does not necessarily emulate a real device in every respect: it may set dimensions without matching touch input, user agent, or pixel density. Puppeteer advises setting the viewport before navigating because changing a phone viewport after load can affect how a site behaves. See its viewport documentation and the relevant API’s own parameter reference.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Capture the same page state

Pages may change after the initial response: scripts can render application data, images can load later, and animations can be mid-frame. A fixed delay may expire too early—or simply add unnecessary waiting. Prefer a page-specific readiness condition, such as waiting for the element that indicates the content you need is ready. Chrome’s CLI documentation describes screenshot timeouts that can capture while a page is still loading; Puppeteer provides a selector wait and screenshot guidance on page screenshots. Use the equivalent readiness control if your API supports one.

3. Match the screenshot mode and output settings

Confirm whether each capture is viewport-only or full-page, whether either uses a clip rectangle, and whether the background is transparent or painted. Also compare scale, image format, and JPEG quality. These affect dimensions, crop, transparency, and compression independently of the page’s DOM. Use PNG while investigating pixel differences so JPEG compression does not add another variable. Puppeteer’s screenshot options and API parameter references show the kinds of controls that may be separate.

4. Check URL, authentication, and browser state

Verify that both captures use the same exact URL, credentials, cookies, locale, color scheme, cache state, and application data. A consent banner or other overlay can also change what is visible. Which controls are available depends on the service: for example, provider documentation may specify cookie-banner handling or a dark-mode option, but such behavior should not be assumed for an unnamed API.

5. Consider browser, operating system, and fonts

If geometry and timing match but text shapes or line wraps do not, font availability and browser or operating-system differences are plausible causes. A hosted service may not expose its installed fonts or rendering internals. Ask the provider what it can confirm, or reproduce the capture locally using a pinned browser environment when exact repeatability is required.

A practical comparison procedure

  1. Record the request. Save the API name, request parameters, response metadata, and browser version if the service provides it.
  2. Set equivalent geometry. Use the same CSS viewport width and height before page navigation. Match device scale factor and mobile, touch, and user-agent emulation where possible.
  3. Wait for equivalent readiness. Capture the same URL and application state. Wait for a meaningful page element; use a controlled delay only as a diagnostic comparison when late content is suspected.
  4. Match capture settings. Align viewport or full-page mode, clipping, background, scale, and format. Start with PNG.
  5. Compare dimensions first. If pixel dimensions differ, investigate viewport, device scale, and capture mode before typography or color.
  6. Inspect layout and rendering next. If dimensions match, compare element positions, text wrapping, fonts, colors, and antialiasing. Persistent text differences point toward font or browser-environment checks.
  7. Make repeatability explicit. For automated captures you control, pin browser and automation versions and explicitly set viewport, device scale, readiness, and screenshot options. Puppeteer documents these controls in its viewport and screenshot options references. A hosted API may not expose every setting.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom Check first
Different overall dimensions Viewport width and height, device scale factor, and viewport versus full-page mode.
Mobile layout differs Whether the viewport was set before navigation; also compare mobile mode, touch, user agent, and pixel density.
Missing images or application content Whether the page-specific readiness condition was met and whether content loads asynchronously.
Unexpected crop or blank margins Clip rectangle, full-page setting, background, and scale.
Text wraps or looks different despite matching dimensions Font availability, browser build, and operating system; ask the provider if these are not exposed.
Colors or edges differ slightly Color scheme, background, image format, JPEG quality, and rendering environment. Use PNG to remove lossy compression as a variable.
Banner, popup, or logged-in content differs Cookies, authentication, locale, application data, and any consent or overlay handling.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its capture options let you set viewport and device presets, wait for a selector or network idle, and choose output and page-capture settings. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.
