Playwright Test is the most direct Percy alternative for teams already using Playwright that are comfortable storing and maintaining screenshot baselines in source control. Choose Chromatic if your workflow centers on Storybook and shared component review, Argos for managed pull-request diff review with an open-source platform, or evaluate Applitools Eyes when your visual-testing needs extend across platforms such as mobile, desktop, or PDF. None is a universal replacement: the right choice depends on how you capture, store, compare, and approve visual changes.

What to compare before replacing Percy

Percy combines screenshot capture with a hosted service for builds, baselines, and visual review. Its Playwright client supports percySnapshot(page, name[, options]) during a Percy build, and documents a drop-in route for existing Playwright toHaveScreenshot() assertions. In the latter workflow, visual verdicts move to Percy’s review interface. See Percy’s Playwright client documentation.

When evaluating an alternative, separate screenshot capture from review. A framework may capture and compare images without providing the same centralized hosted build and approval workflow. Compare these practical questions:

  • Capture and rendering: Does the test render in a pinned local or CI environment, or does a service render or archive it in cloud browsers?
  • Baseline ownership: Are reference images committed alongside code, managed by a service, or associated with branches and builds?
  • Review: Do reviewers inspect diffs in code review, a hosted dashboard, or a pull-request integration?
  • Coverage: Are you testing pages, Storybook components, or platforms beyond browser UI?
  • Repeatability: Can you stabilize test data and hide volatile regions? Are browser, operating system, fonts, and CI settings consistent?
  • Operations and governance: Who maintains baselines and infrastructure? Is self-hosting supported, and do retention and privacy controls meet your needs?
  • Economics: Compare expected volume, overages, concurrency, seats, and enterprise terms—not just a starting price.

Best Percy alternatives by workflow

1. Playwright Test: local baselines for Playwright teams

Playwright Test includes expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On its first run, it creates a reference image; later runs compare screenshots against that baseline. The files live alongside the test suite, so your team owns their review and maintenance. Playwright provides pixel-diff options and screenshot stylesheets that can hide volatile content. Read its visual comparison documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is the clearest fit when your team already runs Playwright, controls its CI environment, and can review baseline changes through its normal code workflow. The trade-off is that local assertions alone do not create a dedicated hosted visual-review process. Your team is responsible for keeping rendering conditions stable: Playwright warns that the host operating system, browser version, hardware, settings, and headless mode can affect screenshots, and recommends generating and comparing baselines in the same environment.

2. Chromatic: hosted review for Storybook and component teams

Chromatic turns Storybook stories into visual tests, which can make component states and variations easier to review. Its documentation also lists integrations with Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress, plus reviewer assignment, discussion resolution, interaction tests, accessibility checks, browser coverage, and viewport configuration. See Chromatic documentation.

Consider it when your team wants shared hosted review and has Storybook stories—or wants to make component-level changes a first-class part of its visual-testing workflow. If you mainly run page-level end-to-end checks, first work out how those tests map to Chromatic’s workflow.

Chromatic’s comparison page, updated August 2026, is vendor-authored, so treat its comparisons with Percy—including claims about baselines, flake, performance, and debugging—as Chromatic’s claims rather than independent findings. It lists Chromatic’s free tier as including 5,000 billed snapshots, Percy’s free plan as including 5,000 screenshots per month, Percy paid plans as starting at 10,000 screenshots per month with pricing handled through BrowserStack, and Chromatic at $179 per month for 35,000 snapshots. The page does not clearly establish that all units and inclusions are directly equivalent. These figures are time-sensitive; verify current allowances, pricing, overages, and terms for your expected volume before deciding. See Chromatic’s Percy comparison.

3. Argos: managed pull-request review with an open-source platform

Argos documents a CI workflow in which tests capture screenshots, CI uploads them, the service compares them with a baseline build, and reviewers approve or reject visual changes on pull requests. Its documentation lists Playwright, Storybook, Cypress, Vitest, and any pipeline that produces screenshots. Argos says its backend, frontend, and screenshot comparison engine are MIT-licensed and developed in the open.

That does not make self-hosting a supported, documented product option: Argos describes itself as a managed cloud service and says self-hosting is not officially supported or documented. Its documentation also lists substantial infrastructure dependencies for organizations that operate a deployment themselves. Review Argos’s overview documentation if you are considering it for an existing CI pipeline.

4. Applitools Eyes: evaluate for broader platform requirements

Applitools’ own comparison material positions Eyes for web, mobile, desktop, and PDF visual testing, and lists SDKs for Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Appium, and Storybook. That makes it a candidate to assess if your organization uses multiple frameworks or needs coverage beyond browser UI. This is vendor positioning; the cited page does not establish a suitable price, comparative accuracy, or fit for your specific requirements. Assess your platforms, governance needs, integrations, and quote directly. See Applitools’ comparison page.

How to choose for your team

If your priority is… Start by evaluating Work your team takes on
Keeping visual checks in an existing Playwright test suite Playwright Test Pinning the rendering environment; committing, reviewing, and updating reference images.
Reviewing Storybook components and states in a shared hosted workflow Chromatic Mapping your stories and other tests to its workflow; checking current plan limits and terms.
Getting managed visual diffs into pull requests, with an open-source platform Argos Using the managed service; do not assume self-hosting is officially supported.
Covering web plus mobile, desktop, or PDF Applitools Eyes Validating platform and integration fit, governance needs, and quoted terms.

Before migrating, inventory what Percy currently does for you: capture points, baseline handling, branch or build review, and approval steps. Then run a representative set of pages or components through the candidate workflow. Check whether diffs are reproducible in CI and whether reviewers can make decisions where your team already works. For a hosted service, confirm present-day snapshot or test units, concurrency, seats, overage rules, retention, and enterprise terms before committing to a plan.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

If you need screenshot capture through an API or an MCP server for AI agents—not a direct substitute for Percy’s hosted visual-baseline review—try ScreenshotNeo first. It returns screenshots or PDFs from a GET request and offers features including full-page capture, element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, device presets, and asynchronous jobs. Its focus is clean captures: it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status.

Common migration pitfalls

Visual diffs change across environments

If screenshots vary despite no intended UI change, compare the baseline-generation and CI environments. Keep operating system, browser version, hardware, settings, headless mode, fonts, and test data consistent where possible. For Playwright, use the same environment to generate and run baselines; use screenshot stylesheets or pixel-diff options to handle known volatile content.

Local screenshot assertions do not reproduce hosted review

A passing or failing assertion is not automatically equivalent to a service-managed build, baseline history, and reviewer approval interface. Before switching to local Playwright checks, decide how your team will review, approve, and maintain changed images.

“Open source” is mistaken for supported self-hosting

Argos says its platform components are open source, but also says self-hosting is not officially supported or documented. If deployment control is a requirement, clarify who will operate the infrastructure and whether the support model is acceptable.

Snapshot pricing is treated as directly comparable

Vendors may describe usage in different units, and plan allowances or pricing can change. Confirm what counts as a billable snapshot or test, whether concurrency or seats affect the plan, and what happens above the included volume. Chromatic’s published comparison figures are explicitly vendor-page claims, not a guarantee of current terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Playwright Test replace Percy?

It can replace screenshot capture and comparison for teams willing to manage local image baselines, but its native assertions alone do not provide Percy’s hosted review workflow.

Does Argos support self-hosting?

Argos says self-hosting is not officially supported or documented, although it describes its platform components as open source.

Which alternative should a Storybook team assess first?

Chromatic is the most directly aligned option in this comparison because it turns Storybook stories into visual tests and supports hosted component review.
