To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a Windows laptop, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key, then preview the encoder feed in YouTube Studio before clicking Go live. The repeat happens in OBS; YouTube receives it as a live stream.

Before you start: check channel eligibility and rights

YouTube’s published requirements say the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube also currently states that livestreamers must be at least 16. These are general YouTube requirements; there is no separate India-specific encoder setup established here. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.

Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. YouTube says it scans livestreams for third-party matches, including copyrighted material from another live broadcast. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, and a stream may be interrupted or terminated if the issue continues. Even if you have a license, a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to avoid interruptions. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its Terms of Service.

Choose how to loop your video in OBS

OBS source Best for Loop setting Requirement
Media Source One local video file Enable Loop in the source properties to replay the file after it ends. OBS supports Media Source on Windows and common local video and audio formats. OBS Media Sources
VLC Video A playlist of local files Enable Loop Playlist so playback restarts when the playlist runs out. Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources

Set up the loop and connect YouTube

  1. Create an OBS scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to create or select a scene for the broadcast.
  2. Add the video source. In Sources, select +, then choose Media Source for one clip or VLC Video for a playlist. Select the local file or playlist. For a single clip, open its properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, enable Loop Playlist.
  3. Check framing and sound. Confirm the video fits the OBS canvas and that its audio registers at a sensible level in the audio mixer. Preview the scene locally before connecting the live stream.
  4. Open YouTube Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live. In the Stream tab, create a stream or select the scheduled or previous stream you intend to use.
  5. Copy the connection details into OBS. Copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. If OBS offers YouTube as a destination, use that integration; otherwise enter the URL as the server and the key in the stream-key field. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and reset it if it is exposed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  6. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room and check the picture and sound before clicking Go live. YouTube’s workflow and labels can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your setup can sustain

YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default and transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers. Its H.264 recommendations include the following example bitrates; they are YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a particular laptop or internet connection can sustain them.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These values come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; its table varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. As a practical starting point, test at 720p30 or 1080p30 only if the laptop and upload connection remain stable. The numbers are not an India-specific broadband recommendation. If OBS drops frames or Live Control Room reports poor stream health, reduce the output resolution or bitrate and test again.

Test before relying on the loop. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement, checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream health. A still or simple loop may behave differently from a test clip with motion and sound, so check the actual file and setup you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting tips.

Monitor and end the broadcast

While live, watch the Live Control Room’s stream-health information and keep an eye on OBS for dropped frames, source playback and audio levels. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder following the prompts in YouTube’s live workflow. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume automatic archiving for a stream that runs longer. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.

Copyright and monetization are separate questions

A video playing continuously is not automatically eligible for monetization, and looping does not by itself establish that you have the rights to the content. YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025, calls repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content,” says the policy applies to live streams, and explains that such content may be ineligible. Assess both your rights to the material and whether the channel offers meaningful original value. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common loop problems

  • The clip plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and check that Loop is enabled. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist.
  • A VLC playlist source is missing or unavailable: Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the intended stream is selected in Live Control Room, then start the encoder again. Keep the key private; reset it if you believe it has been compromised.
  • The preview stutters or stream health is poor: Test the actual clip and connection, then lower the output resolution or bitrate. YouTube’s bitrate table is codec- and frame-rate-specific; a listed bitrate is not evidence that your laptop or connection can handle it.
  • The stream is interrupted for a copyright match: Check the audio and video rights for every item in the loop. A license may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.
