PageCrawl.io’s Custom JavaScript can prepare a monitored page before PageCrawl extracts tracked elements, but it does not take or return a screenshot. To capture a screenshot, configure a PageCrawl monitor, then retrieve its screenshot artifact through the documented API or route it through an integration. Use the live API reference or a dashboard-generated request for exact endpoint details; do not guess an endpoint or response format.
What JavaScript does in PageCrawl
PageCrawl runs Custom JavaScript in the monitored page’s browser context after page load and before tracked elements are extracted. It is useful for changing page state, firing framework events, or performing a sequence of interactions that built-in actions cannot handle. PageCrawl describes it this way: “Custom JavaScript actions let you run JavaScript code on the page as part of the action sequence, before the tracked elements are extracted.” (PageCrawl Help Center.)
This action is not a screenshot API. It does not provide a documented page.screenshot() function or return an image. PageCrawl describes screenshots as monitor outputs and separately documents API routes for screenshots and visual diffs. See its website change detection and monitoring page and API developer guide.
Prepare the page with a Custom JavaScript action
- Open the monitor’s page settings in PageCrawl.
- Under Actions, add an action and select Custom JavaScript.
- Use the action to prepare page state before extraction. For a single click, wait, text entry, or select operation, prefer the corresponding built-in action where available.
- For a multi-step sequence that needs pauses, use an async IIFE and await each necessary interaction. Keep the work bounded: PageCrawl documents a 30-second safety timeout for JavaScript actions and JavaScript tracked elements.
- Save the monitor and confirm that the resulting tracked content reflects the intended page state.
For example, the action editor can run an async sequence to dispatch interactions in the page. Adapt selectors to the site being monitored; the example only illustrates the documented async-IIFE pattern, not a PageCrawl screenshot call:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
(async () => {
const button = document.querySelector('[data-testid="open-details"]');
if (!button) return;
button.click();
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 500));
})();
PageCrawl ignores action return values: use these scripts for side effects, not to pass screenshot data back to your integration. An action sequence that waits too long or gets stuck can reach the safety timeout.
Retrieve the screenshot through PageCrawl’s documented API
The developer guide says the API reference covers screenshots and visual diffs. It recommends first configuring a monitor in the dashboard, enabling developer mode, and copying the exact request the dashboard uses. Generalize that request in your own integration only after confirming its method, endpoint, parameters, and response type in the current API reference. PageCrawl says the reference is generated from its OpenAPI specification and takes precedence if it differs from the guide.
- Configure the monitor and screenshot output in the PageCrawl dashboard.
- Enable developer mode and copy the generated API request.
- Consult the live API reference for the screenshot endpoint and response schema before writing a client. Endpoint details and a verified response example are not established here, so do not assume the response is a direct image, a URL, or a particular JSON field.
- Make the request from a trusted server-side integration and handle the documented response according to its current schema.
PageCrawl API requests use a Bearer token in the Authorization header. Keep reusable credentials on the server; do not put a long-lived token in browser JavaScript delivered to visitors or write it into logs. The developer guide discusses a query-string quick-test option but warns against exposing tokens in scripts and logs.

There is no safe, complete JavaScript fetch example to publish without the current screenshot endpoint and response schema. Use the request copied from developer mode as the starting point, and replace any dashboard-specific values only after checking the live reference.

| Route | How it works | Useful when | Check before implementing |
|---|---|---|---|
| PageCrawl API | Your server makes an authenticated request for screenshot or visual-diff data. | You control a custom JavaScript or Node.js integration and want to decide where the result goes. | Confirm the live endpoint, authentication, response format, and screenshot-selection options in the API reference or dashboard-generated request. |
| Make.com integration | A PageCrawl change trigger can send an event payload with a screenshot image URL field to a workflow. | You want event-driven delivery to a downstream automation rather than building the request flow yourself. | The Help Center article, updated August 20, 2026, said the app was available by invitation while completing Make review. That is a dated availability note, not a guarantee of current access; check the integration page. |
PageCrawl’s product page describes full-page screenshot capture and storage, and says unlimited screenshot storage is an Enterprise upgrade. Check the current plan details before relying on a storage limit or plan feature.
Timeouts, browser mode, and reliability
- Action limit: PageCrawl documents a 30-second safety timeout for custom JavaScript actions and JavaScript tracked elements. Keep waits short and limited to what page readiness requires.
- Overall check limit: The help article lists 45 seconds for Free, 90 seconds for Standard, and 180 seconds for Enterprise and Ultimate. These are plan-level values from PageCrawl’s documentation and may change; verify the current limits for your plan.
- Browser requirement: JavaScript actions require a real browser engine and are not compatible with Fast mode. PageCrawl’s documentation states: “JavaScript actions require a real browser engine (not compatible with Fast mode).”
- Prefer built-in actions for simple work: Native click, wait, typing, and select actions are the simpler choice for one-step interactions; Custom JavaScript is intended for more complex sequences or framework events.
- Keep screenshot retrieval separate: The browser action prepares the page, while the monitor/API or integration delivers screenshot artifacts. Treat page preparation and image retrieval as separate failure points.
Troubleshooting
The action runs but no screenshot is returned
That is expected if you only added Custom JavaScript. The action changes the monitored page before extraction; it does not return an image. Configure screenshot output for the monitor, then use the documented API or integration route to retrieve or route the artifact.

The action times out
Reduce delays and remove waits that do not correspond to a real page transition. Check that awaited operations can complete and that the full sequence stays within PageCrawl’s documented 30-second JavaScript safety window and the overall check timeout for your plan.
The action works in one mode but not Fast mode
JavaScript actions require a real browser engine and are incompatible with Fast mode. Use a compatible browser mode, or replace a simple interaction with a built-in action if that fits the monitor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can PageCrawl Custom JavaScript save a screenshot to a file?
No. It runs in the monitored page for side effects before extraction; screenshot capture and retrieval are separate monitor outputs.
Does a PageCrawl API request belong in public browser JavaScript?
