You define jobs and filters, choose notification destinations, and schedule Urlwatch to run on a computer or server you manage. It is not a hosted monitor that polls pages continuously on its own.
It suits developers and technically comfortable users who want control over what gets compared and where alerts go. The trade-off is that setup, scheduling, filters, and external notification configuration are your responsibility.
How Urlwatch works
On each run, Urlwatch retrieves output for configured jobs, applies their filters, compares the result with the previously retrieved version, and invokes enabled reporters when it detects a difference. Reports can include a unified diff so you can inspect what changed. This is output comparison, not an assessment of whether a change is important to you.
The official project description says Urlwatch is intended to help users watch webpage changes and get notified by email, in the terminal, or through third-party services: Urlwatch project on GitHub.

What you need to set up
The documented workflow assumes you can use a command line, edit YAML configuration, and configure a scheduler. The official quick start points to separate installation instructions; it does not establish one universal installation command or a single set of prerequisites for every operating system. Check the current installation guidance for your platform before installing.
- Install Urlwatch by following the current installation instructions for your environment.
- Run Urlwatch once. This initializes the data store, migrating prior data if applicable or starting fresh.
- Define jobs and filters. Run
urlwatch --editto edit the job and filter file,urls.yaml. - Configure settings and reporters. Run
urlwatch --edit-configto editurlwatch.yaml, including the notification destinations you want to enable. - Schedule recurring runs. Add the Urlwatch command to a scheduler, such as cron or Windows Task Scheduler. The documented guidance recommends not checking more frequently than every 30 minutes; actual checks happen only when your scheduler launches Urlwatch.
Choose a job type
Each job is defined with exactly one of three job keys. Pick the one that matches how the content is produced:

The configuration editor checks job definitions before activating them. For a website that depends on JavaScript, a navigate job can be appropriate, but it also means a browser is part of the monitoring setup.

Use filters to focus on meaningful changes
Filters determine which parts of retrieved output are compared. Urlwatch supports selecting HTML with CSS or XPath, converting HTML to readable text, processing PDFs and JSON, and text operations such as grep, stripping, and sorting. You can chain filters: for example, select a section using XPath, convert it to text, keep matching lines, then sort them.

This flexibility is useful when a page includes timestamps, navigation, or other changing material unrelated to your goal. It is not automatic semantic change detection: you must decide what content matters and maintain the filters if the page structure changes.
Test filter edits against current content
There is an important filter-editing caveat. When Urlwatch reports that a job is unchanged, its comparison uses the previously stored output filtered at the time it was retrieved. Changing the filter does not retroactively apply the new filter to that stored content. Use --test-filter to test the current filter against the current page contents while adjusting it. Configure alerts and reports
Urlwatch includes reporters for console output, SMTP email, Mailgun email, Slack, Discord, Pushbullet, Telegram, Matrix, Pushover, XMPP, shell commands, and other destinations documented by the project. These integrations must be configured in the global settings file; reporters are disabled by default. The configuration guide demonstrates enabling console and email output and supports combined or separate reports per job. Consult the reporter documentation for the current configuration options.
Listing a reporter means Urlwatch documents an integration, not that the provider’s current API, signup process, pricing, or availability is guaranteed. Delivery also depends on your configuration and the external service.

- You manage the schedule. Urlwatch checks only when invoked. You need a machine that is available at scheduled times and a working scheduler.
- Configuration takes care. YAML jobs, filters, and reporter settings offer control but require setup and upkeep.
- Unfiltered pages can be noisy. Page changes unrelated to your interest can produce differences; selectors and chained filters help narrow the watched output. The documentation does not publish a false-positive rate.
- JavaScript pages require a browser workflow. The
navigatejob type exists for pages that need a headless browser, but it is distinct from a simple server-response fetch. - No performance or reliability figures are established here. The project documentation cited for this review does not provide benchmarks, accuracy rates, or reliability statistics.
Urlwatch is a good fit when you want self-managed monitoring with configurable extraction and reporting, and are willing to maintain the jobs and schedule. If you want a managed hosted polling service instead, Urlwatch’s documented workflow does not provide that by itself.

Does Urlwatch check pages continuously?
No. It checks when the command runs, so recurring checks require a scheduler you configure.

Can Urlwatch monitor pages that need JavaScript?
Yes. Its documented navigate job type uses a headless browser for pages requiring browser rendering.
Can I monitor something besides a webpage?
Yes. A command job runs a shell command and monitors its output.
