Use Playwright when you want browser automation inside your own application and control over the page workflow. Use a screenshot API when you want to send a request to a service and receive an image or PDF without operating the browser yourself. Neither approach is universally faster, cheaper, or more reliable; the right choice depends on your capture requirements, deployment, workload, and data-handling needs.
What is the difference?
With Playwright, your code controls a browser page and calls its screenshot method. You are working with browser automation directly: navigate to a page, prepare it as needed, then save a screenshot. The official Playwright screenshots guide demonstrates this workflow, and its Page API reference documents page.screenshot(options).
A screenshot API exposes capture as a service request. Your application sends a request with a URL or other page input, and the service returns an image. For example, Browserless documents a POST endpoint at /screenshot that accepts a URL or inline HTML and can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP according to request options. That example illustrates a hosted API pattern; its capabilities should not be assumed to represent every provider.
Choose by workflow and responsibility
| Question | Playwright | Screenshot API |
|---|---|---|
| How does capture start? | Your application operates a browser page and calls its screenshot method. | Your application makes a service request; the endpoint returns a capture. |
| Who operates the browser environment? | You determine how the browser is provisioned, updated, scaled, and monitored in your deployment. | The service operates the capture environment, but exact responsibilities and controls depend on its terms and API. |
| How much capture control is available? | The documented page API exposes browser-page automation and screenshot options. | Only the options that the provider exposes. Check that service’s current API rather than assuming it matches Playwright. |
| What does it cost or how fast is it? | Depends on deployment and workload; the cited Playwright references do not establish a universal cost or speed. | Depends on provider terms and workload; the cited service documentation does not establish a universal cost or speed. |
Playwright is a natural fit when browser interaction and capture need to live in the same code-driven workflow. A hosted API is a natural fit when a request-and-response interface better suits your application. Account for the engineering and operational work on either path instead of treating browser hosting as costless or assuming a service endpoint covers every browser use case.

Capture a page with Playwright
The following Node.js example follows the documented Playwright pattern: launch a browser, navigate to a URL, save a full-page PNG, and close the browser. Install Playwright and its browser binaries in your project as described in the official installation guide.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Playwright’s screenshot options include full-page capture, image type, and scale, among other output controls. Consult the current API reference for exact names, accepted values, and behavior; do not assume that options exposed by one service use the same names or semantics.
Viewport and full-page captures
A normal screenshot captures the page’s visible area; fullPage: true requests the full scrollable page. As the Playwright guide explains, full-page capture represents the page as though it could fit on a very tall screen. This is different from choosing a larger viewport: the viewport sets the browser’s visible dimensions, while full-page capture changes the captured extent.

Dynamic content and lazy loading
Navigation completing does not necessarily mean that every page element has finished rendering or that content loaded on scroll is present. If the page is dynamic, use Playwright’s page-waiting and interaction APIs to reach the state you intend to capture before calling screenshot. For lazy-loaded content, a full-page option alone may not cause every site to load every asset; verify the result on the target page and add the required scrolling or waits to your workflow.

Browserless is one documented example of a hosted API. Its screenshot endpoint uses a POST request and an API token; the documentation describes capturing a URL or inline HTML, full-page capture, and image type options. Check the current endpoint documentation for the required request body and authentication details before using it: Browserless Screenshot API.
In general, a service integration sends the target and capture options to the provider’s documented endpoint, authenticates as required, then handles the returned image bytes. The exact method, parameter names, supported formats, limits, and error responses vary by service. Do not copy an example request from one provider and expect it to work unchanged with another.

What to compare before choosing
Capture controls
Write down the output you actually need: viewport or full page, image format, viewport dimensions, and how the page must be prepared. Playwright documents page-level screenshot controls; a hosted service exposes its own subset. Check exact format and option support in the current API references, especially if you need dynamic-page preparation or lazy-loaded content.
Operations and throughput
Decide who will provision and update browser execution, manage concurrency, scale for peaks, and monitor failures. The documentation cited here does not quantify those operational costs or establish a throughput winner. Compare current quotas and concurrency terms, then measure representative pages and request volumes in your own environment before committing to a design.
Security and privacy
Before sending a page to a hosted service, check where page content is processed, how credentials are handled, whether content is retained, whether the service can reach private network addresses, and what security controls are available. The cited screenshot endpoint documentation does not settle those terms. If the page contains sensitive data, review the provider’s current security and data-handling terms before transmitting it.

Or skip the browser setup: use ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request API can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. For a simple capture, use cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication, parameters, formats, and the available capture options. The API also accepts familiar parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to ease switching. Beyond a basic URL capture, options include full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait behavior, request blocking, cookies and headers, geolocation, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API.
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Troubleshooting capture failures
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
- Confirm that navigation reached the intended URL and that the page did not redirect to an error, access-denied, or interstitial page.
- Wait for the specific content your page needs rather than assuming navigation completion means the rendering is finished.
- For content loaded by scrolling, trigger the site’s expected lazy-load behavior before capture and inspect the resulting image.
The capture is not full-page
- In Playwright, verify that the screenshot call uses the documented full-page option and consult the current API reference for its exact spelling.
- With a hosted API, confirm that full-page capture is supported and enabled using that provider’s documented request option.
- Check for page layouts that change while scrolling or content that loads only after interaction; capture behavior depends on how the page renders.
The hosted API rejects the request
- Check the provider’s current endpoint, HTTP method, required authentication, content type, and request schema.
- Confirm that the requested image format and capture options are supported by that service.
- Inspect the HTTP status and response body according to the provider’s error documentation; do not interpret every non-image response as a screenshot.
The capture works locally but fails in deployment
- For Playwright, verify the browser installation and runtime dependencies in the deployed environment, then inspect its logs and resource limits.
- For a hosted service, check its authentication, account limits, request constraints, and current service documentation.
- Test the same target and capture settings in the deployment environment; network access and page behavior can differ from a developer machine.
Frequently asked questions
Are a screenshot API and Playwright interchangeable?
No. They are different integration patterns, and a service endpoint’s supported options need not match Playwright’s page API.
Can a hosted screenshot API accept HTML instead of a public URL?
Some can. Browserless documents URL or inline-HTML input; confirm support and request format with the provider you choose.
Does full-page capture guarantee every lazy-loaded image appears?
No universal guarantee follows from the full-page option alone. Page behavior and the capture implementation determine whether scrolling or additional waits are needed.
