Wait for the page-specific content or state you need, then take the screenshot. Selenium’s navigation command waiting for the document’s readyState—complete by default—does not guarantee that later JavaScript updates have finished. An explicit wait for an observable condition is usually more reliable than guessing with a fixed delay.
Why Selenium may return before JavaScript content is ready
Selenium’s official Waiting Strategies documentation says navigation commands wait for a particular readyState, with complete as the default. That state concerns the page’s initial loading; scripts can still update the page or add content afterward. If a screenshot is captured during those updates, it may show an incomplete state. Selenium describes the timing mismatch between automation and a changing page as a common source of flaky tests.
A fixed sleep does not check whether the needed content is actually ready. It can waste time when a page loads quickly and still be too short when the page is slow. Instead, wait for a condition that corresponds to the screenshot you want: a result becoming visible, a loading indicator disappearing, or another known application state appearing.
Capture the page in Python with an explicit wait
This example waits up to 15 seconds for a results container to become visible, then saves a screenshot. The timeout and CSS selector are illustrative: choose a timeout appropriate to your application and replace the selector with one that matches the target page.

Install Selenium and configure a compatible browser and driver in your environment before running it. Choose a readiness condition that matches the page
- Use
presence_of_element_locatedwhen the element’s existence in the DOM is enough, even if it is not yet visible. - Use
visibility_of_element_locatedwhen the element must be displayed and have a non-zero size, as in the example. - Wait for a known loading marker to disappear if its disappearance reliably means the relevant content has settled.
- For content that changes repeatedly, identify a more precise state—such as the expected result count or text—rather than assuming the first appearance is final.
Prefer a condition tied to the page’s behavior over waiting for a generic browser state. A condition succeeding means only that the condition you selected succeeded; it does not prove that every animation, advertisement, or unrelated background request has finished.

Take a viewport or element screenshot
driver.save_screenshot("page.png") saves a PNG screenshot of the current browser window. If only one component matters, capture that element instead after waiting for it:

Be specific about whether your test needs the viewport, an element, a frame, or the entire page. Selenium’s screenshot behavior depends on the binding and current browsing context; its JavaScript API describes a best-effort order of entire page, current window, visible current frame, or entire display.

JavaScript bindings and asynchronous readiness hooks
The same principle applies in other Selenium language bindings: wait for the relevant page condition, then call that binding’s screenshot API. Selenium’s JavaScript driver documents takeScreenshot() as returning a promise containing base64-encoded PNG data. A minimal shape is:

executeAsyncScript is another option when the page exposes a specific asynchronous readiness hook. The injected script must call Selenium’s completion callback, and the script timeout must be configured so the command does not wait indefinitely. Selenium documents this callback requirement in its JavaScript WebDriver API; the Python API reference also documents asynchronous script execution and script timeouts in Selenium 4.50.0 documentation. For ordinary DOM readiness, an explicit wait for the expected element or state is generally clearer.
Troubleshoot incomplete or flaky screenshots
- The screenshot is missing dynamic content: the wait may target the wrong element or only check that it exists. Wait for the specific content to become visible or for the application state that indicates the desired data has arrived.
- The wait times out: confirm the selector against the page’s actual DOM and check whether the content is inside a frame. If it is, switch to the relevant frame before locating the element. Increase the timeout only when the application legitimately needs longer; a larger timeout does not fix an incorrect condition.
- The element exists but is hidden: use a visibility condition rather than presence alone, or wait for the application’s reveal state.
- The screenshot intermittently captures different content: the chosen condition may happen before the page reaches the state the test expects. Wait for a more specific signal, such as the expected text or result state, instead of adding an arbitrary sleep.
- An asynchronous script never completes: ensure every success and error path invokes Selenium’s callback, and set a suitable script timeout.
- The output scope is wrong: use the driver screenshot for the intended current context, or an element screenshot for a component. Verify whether the chosen method captures the visible viewport or a larger page in your binding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium’s page-load completion mean JavaScript has finished?
No. The navigation readiness state does not guarantee that later JavaScript updates have completed; wait for the page-specific condition you need.
Should I wait for network idle before taking a screenshot?
Only if network idle is a meaningful readiness signal for your page. A target-specific DOM or application condition is often more precise; ongoing background requests may prevent network idle.
