To capture a webpage as WebP, use a screenshot API that explicitly supports WebP, pass the page’s absolute URL, and set its documented output-format option to webp. Then handle the response the way that API specifies: it may contain raw image bytes, redirect to an image, or return JSON with an image URL. The request syntax and response handling are provider-specific, so do not assume one API’s fields or defaults apply to another.
Choose an API and confirm its response format
Before writing code, check the provider’s current documentation for WebP support, authentication, request method, parameter names, and response type. For example, Screenshot API documentation describes GET and POST screenshot endpoints and a format option. Webstractor documentation shows a GET request that returns image bytes. These examples demonstrate why it is important to follow the chosen endpoint’s own contract rather than treating a sample request as universal.
- Use an absolute URL, such as
https://example.com. - Set
formattowebpif that is the exact field the provider documents. Some services default to PNG. - Confirm whether the response is bytes, a redirect, or JSON containing a URL.
- Check current limits for dimensions, full-page captures, timeouts, and quotas in the provider’s documentation.
Send a WebP screenshot request
Illustrative POST request
This schematic request follows the POST path and field names documented by Screenshot API; it is not a universal screenshot API standard. Replace the path, authentication method, and fields if your provider specifies different ones.
POST /api/v1/screenshot
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY
Content-Type: application/json
{"url":"https://example.com","format":"webp","quality":80}
Screenshot API documents JPEG/WebP quality values from 1 to 100. That range belongs to that service; it does not establish a shared quality scale or recommended value across providers. Webstractor documents a WebP default quality of 82. Do not transfer that default to another API.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Handle the response as documented
If the endpoint returns raw image bytes, check that the HTTP request succeeded and that the response content type is appropriate before saving it with a .webp extension. If it returns JSON, parse the documented image URL; if it redirects, follow the redirect as specified by the provider. A filename extension alone does not convert an image or prove that its bytes are WebP.
Save the returned image
For an API that returns raw bytes, the basic client-side operation is to write the response body unchanged to a file. Adapt this example to the endpoint’s documented method and authentication, and add the provider’s required parameters.

const response = await fetch(endpointUrl, requestOptions);
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${response.status}`);
}
const contentType = response.headers.get("content-type") ?? "";
if (!contentType.toLowerCase().includes("image/")) {
throw new Error(`Expected image bytes, received: ${contentType || "unknown content type"}`);
}
const bytes = new Uint8Array(await response.arrayBuffer());
await fs.promises.writeFile("screenshot.webp", bytes);
This example assumes a runtime where fetch and Node’s fs module are available; include import fs from "node:fs"; in an ES module. If the API returns JSON or a redirect instead of image bytes, use its documented response flow rather than writing the response body directly as an image.
Choose capture settings for the page
WebP controls the output encoding, not what the browser renders. Viewport, capture scope, load timing, and page state determine the contents of the screenshot. APIs may offer controls such as:

- Viewport: width and height affect responsive layout. Set them to match the intended display context.
- Full-page capture: use it for a whole document rather than only the visible viewport; confirm the provider’s dimension or full-page limits.
- Wait behavior: a selector, delay, or network-idle condition can help capture content that appears after initial navigation. The right choice depends on the site and endpoint.
- Element selection: a CSS selector can limit the capture to a particular page element if the API supports it.
- Device scale: a scale setting can change pixel density and output dimensions. Check the provider’s supported values and limits.
- Quality: if lossy WebP quality is configurable, inspect the actual output for the intended use. Numeric settings are provider-specific.

The saved file is not a valid WebP
Check the provider’s output-format parameter and response contract. You may have received JSON, an error page, or a redirect response rather than image bytes. Inspect the HTTP status and content type, then follow the documented response flow; do not rely on the filename extension.

The screenshot is blank or missing late-loading content
The page may need more time, a selector-based wait, or a different wait condition. If supported, configure the endpoint to wait for the relevant content and verify that the target page is publicly reachable by the capture service.
The page layout differs from what you expected
Set the viewport and device scale explicitly, and confirm whether you requested a viewport-only or full-page capture. Responsive sites can render different layouts at different widths.

The request is rejected
Verify the HTTP method, endpoint path, credential placement, parameter spelling, and URL encoding against the provider’s current documentation. A GET endpoint may require URL-encoded query parameters, while a POST endpoint may expect JSON.
The image quality or dimensions are wrong
Confirm which quality scale and dimension limits your provider supports. A quality value documented by one vendor may be invalid or mean something different elsewhere. Review the returned image itself rather than assuming a setting produces a particular file size or visual result.
Cost, reliability, and operational checks
API pricing, quotas, timeouts, maximum dimensions, data handling, and service reliability vary by provider. The documentation examples here do not establish a neutral comparison of those factors or an independent speed or quality ranking. Before using an endpoint in production, check its current terms and limits, test its behavior on the pages you need to capture, and decide how your application should handle unsuccessful or non-image responses.
