To relay a live source through Wowza on an Indian VPS, use a Wowza-supported Linux image and architecture, create a YouTube Live destination, configure a Wowza Live application and YouTube Stream Target, then publish a source into Wowza and verify the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. A VPS can keep the relay host online, but uninterrupted broadcasting still depends on the source, network, monitoring and recovery plan.
What you need before setup
- A VPS running a Linux distribution and CPU architecture supported by the exact Wowza Streaming Engine release you intend to install.
- A Wowza Streaming Engine license and the release-specific installer and licensing instructions. The sources cited here do not establish a generic installation command or current license price, so use the instructions for your release.
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, plus a source encoder that can publish a live feed with video and audio to Wowza.
- Firewall controls, sufficient outbound bandwidth and a plan to monitor the source-to-VPS and VPS-to-YouTube connections.
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours; complete it before the planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
Choose and size the Indian VPS
Check the image and CPU architecture
Wowza’s technical specifications list Red Hat, Ubuntu and SuSE Linux, and support x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64); 32-bit ARM is unsupported. The operating system must be capable of running a Java VM; the current Engine specifications list Java 17 or 21. Confirm compatibility and installation and licensing steps for the specific Engine release before ordering or deploying. Wowza’s technical specifications are the reference for the current supported platform details.
An Indian VPS is a hosting location, not a distinct Wowza configuration. The cited specifications do not compare Indian providers or measure routes from India to YouTube. Check the VPS’s actual operating-system image, CPU architecture, firewall controls, outbound bandwidth and egress terms. A route that works well for one provider or location is not established by the product specifications; test the route you will use.

Use Wowza’s hardware figures as a starting point
Wowza labels these as production hardware recommendations, not a promise that a particular workload will run successfully. A relay-only workload differs from transcoding, and capacity also depends on stream bitrate and other activity on the server.
| Wowza production recommendation | CPU | Memory | Storage | Network |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | One quad-core CPU at 3.00 GHz or better | 4 GB RAM | SATA HDD | 1 Gbps |
| High-load | Six cores at 3.00 GHz or better | 16–32 GB RAM | SATA SSD | 10 Gbps Ethernet |
These are Wowza’s listed recommendations, not a bandwidth estimate tailored to your stream or a guarantee for an unspecified VPS plan. Determine whether you will transcode; transcoding adds workload. Confirm provider limits and test the configuration at the intended stream profile.

Create the YouTube destination
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Streaming page and create or select a live stream.
- Record the Stream URL and stream key shown for that destination. YouTube’s stream key identifies where the encoder sends its feed; treat it like a password. Keep it out of public notes, screenshots and logs.
- Choose RTMPS when available for encrypted transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingestion.
See YouTube’s stream-key and encoder guidance for its current interface and instructions.
Configure Wowza and connect the source
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create a Live application.
- In that application, add a stream target and select YouTube Live under third-party destinations. Enter the source stream name and the destination details requested by the installed interface, using the URL and key generated by YouTube.
- Enable Stream Targets at the application level, then enable the individual YouTube target. Field names and interface details can vary by Wowza version; follow the instructions for the installed release.
- Start a live source encoder and publish an H.264 feed with audio into the Wowza application. The documented workflow includes an audio track; do not test with video alone.
- In Wowza Manager, confirm the incoming stream is marked Active. Then check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Stop the source when you have finished the test.
Wowza’s YouTube Live connection guide describes creating the Live application and Stream Target and checking the incoming stream and destination preview.

Set encoder quality and bandwidth
Use YouTube’s settings for the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send; its bitrate recommendations are not interchangeable across profiles. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the matching bitrate row for other codecs and profiles.
YouTube recommends upload capacity for the total stream bitrate plus 20% headroom. In this relay setup, check both the source-to-VPS path and the VPS’s outbound connection to YouTube, including the provider’s bandwidth and egress terms. Measure throughput and test stream health at the chosen profile before relying on it continuously. YouTube’s network tips also emphasize reliable connectivity and testing.

What continuous operation requires
Running Wowza on a VPS does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. The cited documentation supports testing, monitoring stream health and testing encoder failover, but does not establish a universal automatic restart or failover recipe for an unspecified Wowza release and Indian VPS provider. Plan how you will detect a failed source, Wowza process or network path, and how you will restore the feed; validate that plan with the actual host and release.
Do not assume YouTube will produce a complete automatic replay of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not promise a complete archive for longer continuous streams. If retaining the full source matters, configure and validate an independent recording strategy. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Troubleshooting
- YouTube channel cannot go live: Check channel verification and whether live-streaming restrictions occurred in the past 90 days. If activation is new, allow up to 24 hours before the first planned broadcast.
- Wowza target does not connect: Confirm the YouTube URL and stream key, that Stream Targets are enabled both for the application and target, and that the required source and egress ports are permitted.
- No incoming stream appears in Wowza: Confirm the source encoder is publishing to the correct Live application and stream name, the source-to-VPS route is reachable, and its firewall path permits the selected protocol.
- Wowza shows an active source but YouTube has no preview: Check the target’s destination details and enabled status, then inspect YouTube Live Control Room and the stream-health indicators. Test with a supported video codec and an audio track.
- Unstable or degraded stream: Compare actual throughput with total bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check both network legs and the VPS provider’s egress terms; lower the profile if the measured path cannot sustain it.
- Long stream has no complete replay: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition is for streams under 12 hours. Use an independent recording plan for a 24/7 source.
