The visibility check matters: moving the pointer does not by itself prove that the page has opened the menu.
Open the menu and capture it
This Playwright Test example captures the current viewport after the Products menu is open:

});Replace the URL, role and accessible name with those used by the site under test. The example assumes a button named “Products” and a menu widget inside a navigation landmark; those semantics are not universal.
Choose locators that match the page
Playwright recommends locators based on user-facing semantics, such as roles and accessible names, or explicit testing contracts such as test IDs. They are generally more resilient than selectors coupled to DOM structure. If the trigger is a link, locate it as a link. If the site exposes ordinary navigation links rather than a menu widget, assert that an appropriate link or navigation element is visible instead. See Playwright’s locator guidance.

Locator actions resolve the current element when they run, which helps when a page rerenders. Prefer locator.hover(); the older page.hover(selector) method is discouraged in favor of it in the Page API.
Why hover should be followed by a visibility check
locator.hover() performs relevant actionability checks and waits for them. If those checks do not pass within the timeout, Playwright throws a TimeoutError. That confirms the action could be performed, not necessarily that the site reached the intended open-menu state. The explicit toBeVisible() assertion waits for and verifies that state before capture. For menus that animate or open after a delay, assert the actual visible state rather than inserting an arbitrary sleep. If the assertion times out, check the trigger, the menu locator, and whether the menu is in a frame or requires the pointer to pass through a particular region. Those details depend on the site.

A viewport capture may better preserve the relationship between the trigger, popup and surrounding layout. Choose based on whether the image is meant to show the menu, provide bug-report context or document a long page. Screenshot modes and options are documented in the Page API and Locator API.
Stabilize screenshots for visual regression
For a one-off image, the visibility assertion is usually the key synchronization step. In Playwright Test visual comparisons, use a screenshot assertion such as await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('menu-open.png'). The screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots are identical before comparing against the expected snapshot. See Playwright’s page assertions documentation.

Screenshot options also include animations: 'disabled', which stops CSS animations, CSS transitions and Web Animations for the capture. Finite animations are fast-forwarded; infinite animations are canceled for the screenshot and resumed afterward. Use this when the desired comparison is a settled menu state. Do not disable animation if the animation itself is what you need to document. Other options include path, scale, image format inferred from the filename extension, and clipping. See the Page API.
Troubleshoot a menu that will not open or capture
- Hover times out: Playwright could not complete the hover actionability checks within the timeout. Confirm the trigger locator matches an actionable element and is not obstructed.
- The hover succeeds but the visibility assertion times out: Confirm that the locator represents the open state, that the correct trigger was hovered, and that the menu is not inside a frame. Check whether the site’s interaction requires a specific pointer path or a different trigger.
- The screenshot omits the menu: Confirm the menu is visible at capture time and that it falls within the selected viewport or clip. Use a locator screenshot if the goal is the menu element alone.
- The output changes between runs: For visual regression, use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion. Disable animations only when a settled state is the intended artifact.
- The selector breaks after a redesign: Prefer a role and accessible name or a documented test ID over a selector tied to incidental CSS or DOM nesting.
