For pages that depend on JavaScript, use a real browser engine rather than treating wkhtmltopdf as a drop-in renderer. Puppeteer or Playwright driving Chromium gives your code control over page navigation and browser rendering; Gotenberg offers a containerized HTTP interface to Chromium. WeasyPrint is a useful alternative for print-focused, static or pre-rendered HTML, but it is not a full browser engine.
Which wkhtmltopdf alternative should you choose?
Start with the point at which the page becomes ready to print. If its content is created or materially changed by client-side JavaScript, choose Chromium-based browser automation or a service that uses Chromium. If the HTML is already complete and the priority is print-oriented CSS layout, evaluate WeasyPrint instead.
| Option | Best fit | What you operate | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppeteer with Chrome or Chromium | JavaScript-dependent pages, browser interaction, and programmable PDF generation | Your application, browser installation, browser processes, versioning, and workload testing | Puppeteer documents PDF generation. Its PDF output uses print CSS media by default, which can differ from the on-screen page. |
| Playwright with Chromium | Teams using Playwright for browser automation or wanting its browser interaction API | Your application and browser deployment | The Page API documents PDF generation. Confirm current PDF support for the browser you select; do not assume output is identical across engines. |
| Gotenberg | A team that wants an HTTP conversion interface while keeping deployment under its control | A Docker-based service and its dependencies | Its Chromium URL-to-PDF route is a self-hosted service, not a managed hosted API. |
| WeasyPrint | Static or pre-rendered HTML where print-focused CSS matters | A Python rendering environment and document-specific validation | It has its own Python CSS layout engine, not a full browser engine. Its documentation does not establish client-side JavaScript execution. |
| Managed HTML-to-PDF API | Teams that prefer not to maintain renderer infrastructure | A vendor relationship and integration | JavaScript support, privacy, reliability, prices, and contract terms vary by provider and need direct verification. |
wkhtmltopdf itself renders HTML to PDF and image formats using Qt WebKit and runs headlessly. Its project site identifies it as LGPLv3 open source; GitHub marks its repository archived and read-only as of January 2, 2023. That repository status is a maintenance fact, not by itself evidence of a particular vulnerability.
Use Puppeteer when you want direct control of Chromium
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for automating Chrome and Firefox; Google Chrome for Developers documents screenshots, PDF generation, and UI interaction among its uses. For PDF output, Page.pdf() renders using print CSS media by default. The following minimal Node.js example navigates to a page and writes the returned PDF bytes to disk.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
const pdf = await page.pdf({ format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
await import('node:fs/promises').then(({ writeFile }) => writeFile('page.pdf', pdf));
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
This is a starting point, not a universal readiness recipe. A page may continue making network requests, or it may report network idle before an application-specific render has finished. For dynamic pages, wait for a selector that indicates the content is ready, or use an application-specific readiness signal before calling page.pdf(). Set a timeout and handle navigation or selector failures so a stuck page does not hold a browser process indefinitely.
Make print output intentional
- Inspect the page’s print stylesheet. Print media can hide navigation, change layout, or omit content that appears on screen.
- Set paper size, margins, background printing, and page-break behavior deliberately for the documents you generate.
- If the PDF should reflect screen styling, Puppeteer documents emulating screen media before generating the PDF. Validate the result rather than assuming screen and print output are interchangeable.
- Print color adjustment may be needed when exact colors matter; check the output on representative pages.
Use Playwright if it fits your browser automation stack
Playwright’s Page API supports page navigation and documents PDF generation. Its browser choice matters: verify the current PDF API and engine limitations for the specific browser you intend to run, then compare the actual PDF output with your requirements. Do not infer that a PDF produced by every Playwright browser will match Chromium output.
The practical migration is similar to Puppeteer: navigate to the target, wait for a reliable page-ready condition, configure print output, generate the PDF, and close the browser context and process reliably. Use the framework your team can deploy, update, and test consistently rather than selecting by assumed rendering parity.

Use Gotenberg for a self-hosted conversion endpoint
Gotenberg packages document conversion behind a Docker-based API. Its quick-start demonstrates the /forms/chromium/convert/url route for converting a URL with Chromium. This separates the conversion request from browser automation code in your application, but it does not remove operational responsibility: your team still deploys and operates the service and its dependencies.
Choose this model when an HTTP conversion boundary is useful to your architecture and you are prepared to manage the containerized service. Confirm that the route’s readiness behavior, PDF settings, and resource use work for your target pages before routing production jobs through it.
Use WeasyPrint only when a browser is not required
WeasyPrint 70.0’s stable documentation describes a BSD-licensed HTML/CSS rendering engine built on its own Python CSS layout engine, rather than a full engine such as WebKit or Gecko. The documented prerequisites include Python 3.10 or later, and the project aims to support web standards for printing.

That makes it a candidate for document-oriented HTML and print CSS, but not an established drop-in replacement for a JavaScript-heavy browser page. If scripts create the content you need, first render or otherwise produce complete HTML, or select a browser-based route. Test fonts and CSS coverage against your actual documents.
How to migrate without guessing
- Check where the content comes from. If important text or layout appears only after scripts run, prioritize Chromium automation or a Chromium-backed service.
- Choose who owns the renderer. A library gives your application direct browser control; Gotenberg gives you a containerized conversion API to operate; a managed API shifts more infrastructure work to a vendor, whose individual terms must be checked.
- Define readiness explicitly. Identify a selector, application signal, or other reliable condition that means the page is ready. Test slow responses, delayed client-side rendering, and pages that never reach a generic network-idle state.
- Specify print behavior. Check media mode, paper dimensions, margins, page breaks, fonts, backgrounds, and color handling. Puppeteer’s print-media default makes this particularly important when replacing a renderer that produced a different layout.
- Compare representative documents. Run the same pages through each candidate and assess visual fidelity, completion time, memory, throughput, and failure behavior in your deployment environment. No universal performance winner is established by the available documentation.
- Exercise recovery paths. Include slow pages, failed navigation, missing readiness selectors, large documents, and renderer restarts in your validation. Record enough context to distinguish a page failure from a renderer or deployment failure.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Browser-based conversion can render JavaScript, but that capability makes page readiness and browser lifecycle part of your system design. Test concurrency, memory consumption, timing, and failure handling on representative documents in the environment where the renderer will run. The cited product documentation does not establish a comparable benchmark or a universal speed ranking.

For self-hosted options, include the work of deploying, updating, and operating the browser or service in your own cost assessment. For managed APIs, verify current vendor pricing, JavaScript behavior, privacy provisions, reliability commitments, and contractual terms directly; category-level descriptions do not establish an individual provider’s offer.

- The PDF is missing content that appears in the browser. The page may not have finished client-side rendering before capture. Wait for an application-specific selector or readiness signal and test delayed content.
- The PDF layout differs from the screen. Puppeteer’s PDF output defaults to print media. Inspect print CSS, decide whether to emulate screen media, and set paper and margin options explicitly.
- Colors or backgrounds are absent or changed. Check background printing and print color adjustment, then inspect the generated PDF rather than relying on the browser preview.
- Navigation or rendering hangs. Generic network-idle conditions may not fit pages with ongoing requests. Use a bounded timeout and a page-specific readiness condition, and ensure the browser is closed in cleanup code.
- A non-Chromium Playwright run cannot produce the expected PDF. Check the current API and PDF support for the selected browser; validate using Chromium if that is the intended PDF engine.
- WeasyPrint output omits script-generated content. Its documented rendering model is a Python CSS layout engine, not a full browser. Supply pre-rendered HTML or use a browser-based renderer.
