Yes. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Sending YouTube a 4K 60fps feed does not mean every viewer has to receive it at 4K 60fps. YouTube’s published guidance does not guarantee a fixed set of lower-resolution options for every stream or explain exactly how the player chooses among them.
What happens between your encoder and a viewer?
Think of a live stream as three stages:
- Ingest: Your encoder sends a video feed to YouTube. YouTube’s settings guidance includes 4K (2160p) at 60fps as an input option.
- Transcoding: YouTube creates multiple output formats from the incoming live stream. YouTube Help says this is intended to let viewers on different devices and networks watch.
- Playback: Viewers watch through YouTube. The published guidance does not specify a universal resolution ladder or the exact rules by which a particular viewer receives a particular rendition.
So, YouTube accepting a 4K60 input and creating multiple formats are established; a promise that every stream will offer specific outputs such as 1080p or 720p is not. A viewer’s available options can be checked in the YouTube player’s quality menu while the stream is live.
Will viewers be able to watch at 1080p if you stream in 4K?
YouTube’s statement that it creates multiple output formats supports the expectation that viewers may have options below the incoming 4K quality. But the cited encoder guidance does not promise 1080p specifically for every stream. Do not treat a particular lower resolution, a complete quality ladder, or its availability at a given moment as guaranteed by the 4K60 ingest setting alone.
The incoming feed is also not the same thing as the quality a viewer actually sees. Playback depends on the formats YouTube makes available and the viewing conditions; YouTube cites differences in devices and networks as the reason it provides multiple formats. Its encoder page does not publish the specific rendition-selection algorithm.

YouTube’s published 4K60 encoder settings
The English version of YouTube Help’s encoder-settings table, accessed in 2026, gives these figures for 2160p at 60fps. They are YouTube’s published settings, not results from an independent test.
| Codec | YouTube’s listed 4K60 bitrate setting |
|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum |
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
These figures come from the English encoder-settings page; localized versions may show different table columns or recommendations. Check the current settings page for the codec and values that apply to your setup rather than combining figures from different versions. YouTube’s 4K60 settings are in its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Settings and latency that matter for a 4K60 stream
- Resolution and frame rate: YouTube recommends encoder frame rates up to 60fps, and its settings page supports 2160p at 60fps.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate mode: The guidance specifies constant bitrate encoding.
- Codec: The RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
- Latency: Low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; YouTube sets them to normal latency.
For current configuration details and the full table, use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. YouTube also explains that an encoder can be software or standalone hardware, and that encoders allow creators to use external audio/video hardware and manage advanced productions in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
How to check the result before and during a stream
- Test a representative stream before the event. Use audio and motion similar to what you expect to broadcast; a static test image will not represent a fast-moving production.
- Check playback quality options. Open the test stream in YouTube and inspect the player’s quality menu. This shows the options available for that stream and viewer at that time, rather than a guaranteed ladder for all streams.
- Monitor stream health while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the broadcast so you can respond to problems with the incoming feed.
For prerecorded video that needs to run continuously
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings or a playlist—not a live camera production—StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It does not stream from a camera.
