Use Selenium to reach each important state in a web app, then save a screenshot at that checkpoint. In Python, driver.save_screenshot("01-login.png") saves the current browser view as a PNG; for one control, capture the element itself. A screenshot documents what was visible at that moment, not hidden application or backend state.

Capture and save a workflow screenshot with Selenium

The core sequence is: start a WebDriver, navigate to the app, wait for the intended state, save the image, and close the driver. This runnable Python example saves a screenshot to a directory after opening a page:

from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver

output_dir = Path("screenshots")
output_dir.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)

driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    saved = driver.save_screenshot(str(output_dir / "01-start-page.png"))
    if not saved:
        raise OSError("Selenium could not save the screenshot")
finally:
    driver.quit()

Replace the URL with the page under test. The example assumes a working Chrome WebDriver setup; the screenshot call itself is a WebDriver operation. Selenium’s official documentation demonstrates navigating, saving a screenshot, and quitting the driver: Selenium WebDriver documentation.

In Python, save_screenshot writes a PNG and returns False if an I/O error occurs. Use a destination with a .png extension and preferably an explicit, valid path. Check the return value and confirm the file exists before embedding it in a report. The Python API also provides screenshot data as PNG bytes or Base64; Base64 can be useful when embedding the image in HTML. See the Selenium common WebDriver API reference.

Current browser view Showing the page as it appears in the current browsing context or window. driver.save_screenshot("step.png")
One element Focusing on a form, button, status, or other relevant page element. Locate the element, then call its screenshot method, for example element.screenshot("status.png").
Full document Showing content beyond the current viewport. The reviewed Selenium 4.50.0 Python Firefox API documents save_full_page_screenshot(filename). This specific reference does not establish identical support for every browser driver.

Selenium’s official examples cover driver and element screenshots, while the full-document method is documented in the Firefox Python API: Selenium Firefox WebDriver API reference. A regular current-view capture should not be assumed to include content outside the viewport.

Capture one element

Find the element after the page reaches the relevant state, then save its screenshot. For example:

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By

status = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "[data-testid='status']")
status.screenshot("03-status.png")

Use a selector that identifies the intended element in your app. If it is not present or visible yet, wait for it before capturing; otherwise the lookup or capture may fail, or the image may not represent the desired state.

driver.save_full_page_screenshot("workflow-full-page.png")

Use this only where the chosen Firefox WebDriver supports that documented method. If you need a portable record across different drivers, capture deliberate scroll positions or verify the selected driver’s full-page capability rather than assuming a current-view screenshot covers the whole document.

Plan a clear sequence of workflow evidence

Capture checkpoints that help someone understand the journey rather than saving arbitrary frames. A useful sequence may include the initial state, the visible result of a significant action, a validation or error state when relevant, and the completion state. Selenium provides the capture operation; the sequence and naming below are practical documentation conventions.

  1. Prepare the destination. Create the output directory before the run so a missing directory does not prevent saving.
  2. Reach the checkpoint. Perform the workflow action and wait until the expected visible state appears before issuing the screenshot command.
  3. Save a distinct file. Use sortable names such as 01-login.png, 02-search-results.png, and 03-confirmation.png.
  4. Keep conditions understandable. When visual comparison matters, use a consistent viewport; WebDriver includes window sizing methods. Record the browser, viewport, and relevant test fixture alongside the images.
  5. Inspect the artifacts. Open the saved files and ensure they show the intended state before attaching them to a report.
  6. Add captions. Identify the user action and visible result. Describe only what the image shows; a screenshot alone does not establish hidden application state or backend success.

If a workflow displays personal or confidential information, use a test account and sanitize visible content before sharing the images.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The screenshot is missing or the save call returns False. The destination path is invalid, its directory does not exist, or the process cannot write there. Create the directory first, use a valid full path with a .png filename, check the return value, and verify the file exists.
The image shows the previous step or a loading state. The capture ran before the expected page state became visible. Wait for the relevant element or result before capturing, then inspect the saved file.
Content below the fold is absent. A current-view screenshot captures the current browser view, not necessarily the full document. Use a full-document method documented for your selected driver, or take deliberate screenshots at scroll positions. The cited full-document Python method applies to Firefox’s API reference, not a universal driver guarantee.
An element screenshot fails or misses the intended control. The selector may not match, or the target may not yet be available or visible. Confirm the selector identifies the intended element and wait for the element before calling its screenshot method.
A screenshot is being treated as proof of a completed transaction. The image records visible pixels, not hidden backend state. Caption the visible outcome precisely and use application-side checks or logs when backend completion must be established.
