Capture with get_screenshot_as_png(), inspect the bytes, then write them to an absolute path and inspect the file. This separates a browser/session capture problem from a filesystem or later-overwrite problem.
Check whether Selenium returned PNG data
Selenium handles capture and saving in separate stages: it requests screenshot data, decodes it, and then writes the bytes to the requested filename. Its save method reports whether the file operation raised an I/O error; a True result does not validate that the payload is a complete PNG image. Read the returned bytes before involving the destination file:

f.write(png)A PNG file normally begins with the eight bytes b'x89PNGrnx1an'. A non-empty response with that signature is useful evidence that capture returned PNG-formatted data, though it does not by itself prove the entire image is valid.

- Bytes are empty: the problem occurred before the explicit file write. Record any exception and inspect the active WebDriver session, selected window, browser and driver logs, and version information.
- Bytes look like PNG data, but the saved file is empty: investigate the resolved path, write permissions, later file operations, and whether another process truncates or replaces the file.
These checks isolate the stage where data is lost; without the code and runtime details, no single cause can be assumed.
Check the save result and the actual destination
Use an absolute path, create its parent directory, and inspect the file after saving. Selenium documents that save_screenshot() saves the current window as PNG, returns False for an I/O error, recommends full paths, and expects a .png extension. The implementation can still return True after writing the bytes it received without checking PNG dimensions or validating the image payload.

If the file is valid immediately after capture but becomes empty later, inspect subsequent test steps and any cleanup or output-handling code.
Verify the selected window and browsing context
The WebDriver Take Screenshot command captures the current top-level browsing context’s visual viewport, not an arbitrary element or every open tab. The WebDriver specification defines that scope and treats a closed top-level context as an error.

- Confirm that the intended tab or window is selected and remains open when capture runs.
- If your test has switched into an iframe, return to the top-level context when you intend to capture the page/window.
- If the screenshot command raises an error, preserve the full exception instead of focusing only on the output file.
Wait for the content you expect to capture
A page-load completion is not a guarantee that every asynchronous element has rendered. Selenium’s get() waits for the page’s onload event, while applications may continue fetching data, displaying overlays, or rendering content afterward. The WebDriver screenshot operation is tied to a visual-viewport capture after an animation-frame callback; that does not mean application-specific work has finished. Wait for a condition that represents the content you need—for example, a target element becoming visible or a loading indicator disappearing—instead of assuming that a fixed sleep or onload is sufficient:

Separate renderer or session failures from file problems
If the screenshot call raises WebDriverException or browser/driver logs show a renderer or DevTools disconnect, treat it as a browser/session branch rather than a file-write failure. Record the full exception, Selenium version, browser and driver versions, operating system or container, and headless configuration. A Selenium issue report describes a renderer disconnection during screenshot capture with Selenium 4.9.1, Chrome 114.0.5735.90, and matching ChromeDriver 114.0.5735.90. It is one historical report, not evidence that the same cause explains another empty file.

Use the observed bytes and file to choose the next step
