Document tablet layouts by capturing browser viewports at the CSS-pixel widths where your page changes—not by assuming every tablet has one standard size. Record the viewport dimensions and relevant test conditions, then caption what the layout actually does. A screenshot shows a visual state; it does not, by itself, prove accessibility conformance.

Choose widths that reveal the layout’s behavior

Start with the page’s responsive rules and identify transitions that change something meaningful: navigation, column count, sidebars, card arrangement, or content visibility. Capture widths just below, at, and just above each important transition. This shows both the change and the conditions around it.

CSS media queries can apply styles based on viewport dimensions and other environment features. There is no universal tablet breakpoint: “tablet” is an audience label, not a precise viewport size. Use the actual behavior of your page to select widths, rather than adopting a generic tablet number.

Build a small, useful capture set

  • Include one representative width for each layout state that matters.
  • For a transition, capture on both sides; include the exact boundary when you need to document its behavior.
  • Keep the route and page state identical across captures so the layout—not unrelated content changes—is what you compare.

Set and record the browser viewport

Responsive CSS responds to the browser’s viewport, so record width and height in CSS pixels. A tablet’s physical screen resolution is not interchangeable with its browser viewport. Include orientation and device pixel ratio (DPR) when they matter to the question being documented.

Safari’s Responsive Design Mode is one documented way to preview different widths, heights, and pixel ratios, and it can be used alongside Web Inspector while resizing. Other browser responsive-design tools can serve the same purpose; the important thing is to record the conditions well enough for someone else to reproduce the state.

Keep comparison conditions stable

  • Use the same route, browser or tool, zoom level, and page state for screenshots you intend to compare.
  • Choose a viewport screenshot to show an above-the-fold composition or local interaction; choose a full-page capture when the whole page or flow is the subject.
  • Record the capture tool and browser, since those are part of the reproduction context.

Capture and explain each state

  1. Open the target route in a responsive-design tool and set the chosen width and height.
  2. Set orientation and DPR if relevant to the case being documented.
  3. Bring the page to the same state used for the other captures, then capture either the viewport or full page according to the report’s purpose.
  4. Write a caption that identifies the route, dimensions in CSS pixels, orientation, DPR if relevant, browser or tool, state shown, and observed behavior.
  5. Describe only what the image confirms: for example, whether content stacks, moves, changes column count, or is placed behind a control.

Caption template: Page/route — viewport W × H CSS px — orientation — DPR if relevant — browser/tool — state shown — observation. A caption such as “navigation collapses into menu at 820 CSS px” is useful only when that behavior is visible and verified at that width.

Use a clear filename convention

A project-specific filename such as product-detail-820x1180-portrait.png can help identify a capture. State in the report that the dimensions refer to CSS pixels, not the resulting image’s pixel dimensions. There is no required universal naming scheme; consistency within the project matters.

Use emulation and physical-device checks for different purposes

Emulated viewports are repeatable and useful for documenting exact widths and pixel ratios. A real tablet can be an additional check when hardware- or browser-specific behavior matters, but physical tablet hardware is not necessary just to document responsive layout states.

These approaches answer different questions: emulation makes it straightforward to compare selected viewport conditions, while a physical device can corroborate how a particular device and browser render the page. Neither changes the need to label the conditions of each screenshot.

Keep layout documentation separate from accessibility testing

A tablet screenshot records one visual state; it is not an accessibility audit. WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.10, Reflow, specifies a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels for vertically scrolling content and a height equivalent to 256 CSS pixels for horizontally scrolling content, subject to exceptions for content whose use or meaning requires a two-dimensional layout. WAI explains that 320 CSS pixels corresponds to a 1280 CSS-pixel-wide starting viewport at 400% zoom. These are reflow test conditions, not recommended tablet widths.
