Usually, wkhtmltoimage either cannot retrieve the font stylesheet or font file, cannot access a local font, cannot find a suitable font in its runtime, or captures the page before a delayed font load finishes. A page loading successfully does not prove its font loaded: hosted fonts commonly require a stylesheet request and a separate font-file download. Check those stages first, then local access and installed fonts; test a delay only if loading is still in progress.
Start with a minimal reproduction
Before changing flags, reduce the problem to a page with one font declaration and one short line containing the characters that fail. This separates a font problem from unrelated page scripts, styles, and layout.
- Record the exact output of
wkhtmltoimage --version, the operating system, whether the input is a URL or local file, and the full command you run. - Make a minimal page that uses the exact font family, weight, and style in question. Include the missing glyphs in its sample text.
- Capture that page and compare it with the original. A normal browser can provide a clue, but it may use a different loading path or installed-font environment than the renderer.
There is no established cross-build compatibility matrix for every wkhtmltoimage package, so the version and environment are important when results differ.
Check whether the font resources loaded
Hosted fonts require two successful requests
For a remote web font, check both the stylesheet URL and the font file URL referenced by that stylesheet. Google Fonts documents that its API tailors CSS to the requesting user agent; after receiving the CSS, the client separately downloads the font. Failure at either stage can leave the page displaying a fallback even when its HTML and other assets load. See Google Fonts: Getting Started.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Verify the page can reach the exact stylesheet URL used by the page.
- Inspect that stylesheet’s font-file URL and verify that it too is reachable from the renderer’s environment.
- Check renderer output and JavaScript diagnostics for load errors. A successful page load is not proof that every font resource succeeded.
Local fonts require a readable, correctly resolved path
If the input HTML or an @font-face rule points to a local file, resolve the path relative to the page and check that the user or process running wkhtmltoimage can read it. Local-file access controls may prevent a local page from reading other files. The command reference describes --allow, --enable-local-file-access, and --disable-local-file-access; where possible, allow only the needed directory rather than broadly opening local-file access. See the wkhtmltoimage command reference.
Check fonts and glyphs in the renderer’s runtime
A font installed on your workstation may be absent or undiscoverable in a server, container, or different user environment. Check font availability inside the same runtime and under the same account that launches the renderer. Qt’s Linux font documentation says Qt normally uses fontconfig to access installed system fonts, and describes a fallback font database if fontconfig is unavailable. This is general Qt 6.8 guidance, not a guarantee for every older Qt WebKit-based wkhtmltoimage build. See Qt for Linux.
Also verify that the CSS family name matches the name declared by @font-face, that the requested weight and style are available, and that the font actually contains the characters that are missing. Font support depends on the renderer’s build and available libraries; Qt’s documentation describes supported formats through FreeType and notes that fonts may not cover all Unicode characters. See Qt QFontDatabase.

Use a delay only to test delayed loading
If scripts add the font styles or the relevant requests are still pending after the page loads, test a short post-load delay:

wkhtmltoimage --javascript-delay 1500 https://example.com /tmp/shot.png
The value is milliseconds. Adjust it to test whether a delayed load is the cause; there is no universal value that fixes every page. The delay cannot repair a blocked URL, an unreadable local file, a missing runtime font, or absent glyphs. Add --debug-javascript when investigating script behavior:

Choose the fix that matches the failure
| What you find | Next check or fix |
|---|---|
| Stylesheet or font-file request fails | Correct the URL or make the resource reachable from the renderer. A delay does not fix an inaccessible resource. |
| Local font path is wrong or unreadable | Correct the path and permissions; use --allow <path> for the required directory where practical. |
| Font is missing from the server or container runtime | Install or expose the required font to the same runtime and account, then reproduce the capture. |
| Only some characters are wrong | Check glyph coverage for those exact characters and verify the intended family, weight, and style. |
| Resources load, but only the minimal page fails in one build | Record the build and operating system, inspect warnings, and compare with another build or environment before concluding it is an engine limitation. |
| Text is present but merely too small | Consider --minimum-font-size <int>; it changes the minimum size and does not address missing or substituted fonts. |
--load-error-handling <handler> controls behavior when page loads encounter errors; it does not make a failed font request succeed. Consult the command reference for the available options.

When to suspect a renderer-specific problem
If the font resources load, the needed font is available to the runtime, the CSS family and glyphs check out, and the minimal page still renders incorrectly, compare the exact builds and environments and inspect warnings. Historical Qt WebKit issue records include font-loading problems, but an archived issue does not establish that an unspecified current package has the same defect. See the archived WebKit issue.

If you need a screenshot without configuring a local browser renderer, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Frequently asked questions
Why does only one language or set of characters appear as boxes?
Check whether the selected font contains those particular glyphs. A font can render common Latin text while lacking characters used elsewhere.
Does increasing the minimum font size fix a missing web font?
No. --minimum-font-size affects text size; it does not load a missing font or replace unavailable glyphs.
