“SSL handshake error” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Before changing certificates, OpenSSL libraries, or command-line flags, capture the full error output and identify whether the failing request is the main page or a linked resource. The right fix depends on the exact wkhtmltoimage build, operating system, TLS runtime, and server response.
Capture the details that identify the failure
Save the complete standard error output and the exact command that produced it. Also record:
- The output of
wkhtmltoimage --version, including whether it says “with patched qt.” - Your operating system or distribution, how wkhtmltoimage was installed, and the package or binary source.
- The target URL and whether the main document or a CSS file, script, image, font, iframe, or redirected request appears to fail.
- The complete wording of the error. “Warning: SSL error ignored,”

Find out whether the page or a resource fails
- Run the same capture against the main page and preserve its full stderr output.
- Try a minimal local HTML file with no external stylesheets, scripts, images, fonts, or frames. If it renders, the issue is likely tied to a remote request or the page’s dependencies rather than basic local rendering.
- Inspect each remote dependency individually, including redirects. Check the host, certificate chain, and response for the specific asset that fails.
- If the main document itself fails, focus first on its certificate chain, the process’s trust store, TLS runtime, and any proxy or redirect involved.
A reported issue describes CDN resource failures alongside SSL warnings and an overall network error; it illustrates why the failing URL matters, but does not establish a universal cause: wkhtmltopdf issue #3200.

Check the TLS runtime for this exact build
Messages such as cannot resolve SSL_load_error_strings can point to a mismatch between the binary and the OpenSSL libraries available at runtime. Confirm which Qt and OpenSSL libraries the installed binary uses, and whether the expected libraries are present and loadable. Do not assume that replacing the system OpenSSL installation is the fix: a library change can affect other software, and the correct runtime depends on how this particular package was built.
The project release history records historical OpenSSL-related patches, while issue #3945 reports unresolved OpenSSL symbols with a 0.12.5 build. These are reasons to check binary and library compatibility, not evidence that every SSL failure has the same cause: wkhtmltopdf issue #3945.

Qt 5.14’s Linux and Windows guidance says that Qt release requires OpenSSL 1.1.1 and that its libraries are not automatically deployed. Apply that requirement only when it matches the Qt version and packaging in use; it should not be generalized to every wkhtmltoimage build or platform: Qt 5.14 release guidance.
Separate certificate trust from TLS compatibility
A process can have compatible TLS libraries and still reject a site because it cannot build a trusted certificate chain. Check that the target serves a valid chain and that the wkhtmltoimage process—especially inside a container—can read the expected CA certificates. Compare the trust store visible to the process with the one available on the host.

Do not mistake an HTTP denial for a handshake failure
A response such as 403 Forbidden means the server or an intermediary denied the request; by itself, it does not prove a TLS handshake failed. Check authorization, proxy behavior, redirect targets, and server access policy separately. An issue report involving wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 and patched Qt includes a 403 response, illustrating why the HTTP status must be distinguished from TLS errors: wkhtmltopdf issue #4462.

Use SSL-verification bypasses only as a brief diagnostic
Disabling certificate verification can help isolate whether certificate validation is involved, but it is not a safe routine fix. Qt cautions: “Use QSslSocket::ignoreSslErrors() with caution as it will create security risks in your application.” If you use a bypass to test, keep it narrowly scoped, do not treat the result as a production remedy, and restore verification before relying on the capture. Fix the trust store or certificate-chain problem instead: Qt Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Classes.
Choose the next step from the evidence
- Unresolved OpenSSL symbols: verify the binary’s Qt/OpenSSL expectations and the runtime libraries actually loaded by that process.
- Certificate verification or chain errors: check the site’s chain and the CA store visible to the process or container.
- Only a linked asset fails: inspect that resource’s hostname, redirects, certificate, and access response.
- 403 or access denied: investigate authentication, proxy, redirect, or server policy rather than labeling it a handshake failure.
- Failure persists on a current site: record the exact build and platform, and evaluate whether fetching resources locally or using a maintained renderer better fits your requirements. The cited project sources do not test or rank replacement products.
