Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can run OBS on a rented Windows server and send a continuous live feed to YouTube, provided the server can run OBS reliably, sustain the required upload bandwidth, and keep the OBS session alive. The workflow is: enable YouTube Live, configure OBS with the stream URL and key, test the encoder and connection, then plan separately for restarts, failures, and recordings. OBS lists Windows 10 and Windows 11—not Windows Server editions—as its system requirements, so confirm compatibility with your hosting provider before renting a machine.
Before you rent a server: check whether it can run OBS continuously
OBS’s published basic requirements list Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. OBS also cautions that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee that a particular streaming workload will succeed. Its requirements page does not establish support for every Windows Server edition, remote desktop setup, or virtual GPU. Ask the provider about the specific machine and image you plan to use.
- Windows image and graphics: Confirm the Windows edition and whether its graphics support meets OBS’s requirement. Ask the provider about virtual GPU limitations if applicable.
- Remote session behavior: Find out whether logging off or closing a Remote Desktop session affects desktop applications such as OBS. Do not assume the stream will continue after disconnecting.
- Restarts and recovery: Check how you can detect and recover from a server reboot, OBS crash, or lost connection.
- Sustained outbound traffic: Confirm the server’s upload capacity and any traffic limits or charges. A speed test alone does not establish that bandwidth will remain available continuously.
CPU and encoder demands depend on the chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. A simple static scene is a lighter workload than a complex scene with multiple sources, but you still need to test the actual setup on the rented server.
Enable YouTube Live and create a stream
- Sign in to the YouTube channel that will broadcast. Enable live streaming if it is not already enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream. Choose whether it will be public, unlisted, or private according to who should be able to watch.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you think someone else has obtained it.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted encoder-to-YouTube transport. Use the URL and key provided for your stream rather than substituting a guessed server address.

Install and configure OBS on the server
- Install OBS on the rented Windows machine, using an installation compatible with the provider’s Windows image. If the provider does not confirm that the image and graphics environment can run OBS, resolve that before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
- Create the scene or scenes you need. Add the required video, image, text, or audio sources, and confirm that sound reaches the OBS audio mixer. For a feed that should remain visually stable, check what viewers will see if a source disappears.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose YouTube if the available integration fits your setup, or configure the service with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- Set the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate under OBS’s output and video settings. Match them to your source material, server capacity, and YouTube’s current guidance below.
- Run a private or unlisted test first. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then monitor OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload before switching to the intended audience setting.
Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. For SDR video, it specifies Rec. 709. For stereo audio, it lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps.
If you use H.264, YouTube’s current recommended bitrate ranges include the following. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular VPS can encode or sustain the stream.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 7–21 Mbps |
Pick a rate within YouTube’s range that suits the actual video and the server’s sustained upload capacity. Higher frame rates, more motion, and higher resolutions generally demand more bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom above the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. If you are only sending one stream, do not mistake that guidance for permission to use a connection that barely matches the selected bitrate; leave operating margin for variation.
Test the connection and the whole broadcast
Test with representative motion and audio rather than a static placeholder. Keep the stream unlisted or private while checking it, and inspect both the OBS status and YouTube Live Control Room. A stable preview is useful, but a short test cannot prove that a server, session, or network path will remain stable indefinitely.

- Confirm the picture, audio, resolution, and frame rate are what you intended.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame or encoding warnings.
- Confirm the server has enough sustained outbound capacity for the selected bitrate, including the recommended margin.
- Check what happens when the remote desktop disconnects, the server reboots, or OBS is closed. Test recovery behavior deliberately rather than assuming it.
Start OBS automatically, but plan for failures separately
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. For a Windows scheduled task or other automated launch, OBS says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. A scheduled launch can help start OBS, but it is not by itself a complete 24/7 reliability plan.
- Configure OBS and confirm that it can stream manually before adding automation.
- Create a Windows scheduled launch using OBS’s documented
--startstreamingparameter and set the working directory to the directory containingobs64.exe. - Test the launch in the same account and session conditions that will apply after a reboot. Verify that OBS opens the intended profile and scene and reaches YouTube.
- Decide how you will handle Windows updates, server restarts, OBS crashes, network loss, and alerts. The OBS launch parameter does not guarantee automatic recovery from all of these events.
Provider-specific restart and session behavior varies. Ask the provider how to keep the required user session available and how to receive notice of outages; do not treat a disconnected remote desktop window as proof that the application is still running correctly.

Understand the 24-hour archive limitation
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee an archive for one event left live for 24 hours or longer. Keeping a stream live, recovering it after an interruption, retaining a recording, and making a replay available are separate requirements.
If a replay matters, do not rely on a single uninterrupted 24/7 event to produce an archive. Check YouTube’s current documentation and design a separate recording or segmented-event workflow that meets your retention needs.

OBS on a rented server versus a managed prerecorded-video service
OBS on a VPS makes sense when you need OBS scenes, sources, and audio control and are prepared to manage the Windows environment, bandwidth, and recovery. For prerecorded videos that need to play continuously, YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video live streaming. That listing establishes its stated use case, not that it supports every OBS production workflow.
| Decision point | OBS on a rented Windows server | Managed prerecorded-video service |
|---|---|---|
| Input | OBS sends the live output of configured scenes and sources. | Gyre is listed by YouTube for 24/7 prerecorded-video live streaming; other input details are not established here. |
| Scene and audio control | You configure scenes and audio in OBS. | Compatibility with a full OBS production workflow is not established by the YouTube directory listing. |
| System upkeep | You or your provider must account for Windows, OBS, session, restart, and network behavior. | A cloud listing does not establish specific support, uptime, recovery, or update commitments. |
| Archive needs | You need a separate plan if a 24/7 event’s replay must be retained. | Do not assume a managed streaming service solves YouTube’s archive limitation; verify its current features and your recording needs. |
For prerecorded uploads that only need to loop on YouTube, StreamNeo is another cloud option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not camera-based OBS production.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is looping uploaded video on YouTube rather than operating an OBS scene, StreamNeo avoids keeping a rented Windows desktop session running at home or in a VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.
Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free StreamNeo day.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- YouTube will not accept the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the first-time activation period has passed, and the stream URL and key match the stream in Live Control Room. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The preview is unstable or shows poor health: Check that OBS uses CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, then lower bitrate or output settings if the server cannot sustain the chosen workload. Verify upload capacity and leave bandwidth headroom.
- OBS reports encoding overload: The machine may not handle the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity. Reduce workload or ask the provider about CPU and graphics limits; OBS’s basic requirements alone do not guarantee success.
- OBS does not start through Task Scheduler: Confirm the task uses the intended Windows account and session, includes
--startstreaming, and sets its working directory to the folder containingobs64.exe. - The stream stops after a disconnect or reboot: The server’s session or restart behavior may not preserve OBS. Confirm provider-specific behavior and test startup and recovery; the launch parameter alone does not cover every failure.
- No YouTube replay appears after a long stream: YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a continuous 24-hour event. Use a separately planned recording or segmented workflow if retaining a replay is important.
