A blank screenshot is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The API may have captured the page before the app was ready, reached a login or error page instead of the intended route, encountered automation blocking, or captured a viewport that excludes the content. Start by checking what the browser actually loaded; adding an arbitrary delay or browser flag can hide the evidence without fixing the cause.
First determine whether the app or the capture is blank
Open the exact URL from the screenshot request in an interactive browser and wait for the screen you expect. If it is blank there too, investigate the application first: route handling, JavaScript errors, and failed API calls are likely places to look. If it works interactively but not in the screenshot, compare the API request’s browser context, access state, timing, and capture geometry with the working browser session.
A screenshot can be a valid image of the wrong state. It may show a sign-in page, an access-denied response, a challenge, or an application error page. That is different from a failure to encode or return a PNG, JPEG, or WebP file.
Inspect the destination and browser evidence
Record the final URL and document status
Check redirects and the final page URL, along with the main document’s HTTP status. Confirm that the capture reached the expected route, not a login page, redirect destination, access-denied screen, or application error. Browserless lists CAPTCHA pages, access denied or 403 responses, blank or white screenshots, and missing content as possible signs that a site is blocking automation (Browserless Screenshot API documentation).

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Look for errors and failed requests
Collect console errors and page errors, then inspect failed requests for the document, JavaScript, stylesheets, images, fonts, and app APIs. Compare the rendered DOM and visible app state with the screenshot. These checks help distinguish an app that never rendered from a capture of the wrong or incomplete state. The provider references below describe configuration controls, not a diagnosis of any particular page; the exact cause depends on the URL, request settings, and browser evidence.
Wait for the app’s actual ready state
A navigation milestone does not necessarily mean a single-page app has fetched its data, updated the DOM, and painted the expected view. Prefer an application-specific visible selector or event that indicates readiness over an arbitrary fixed sleep. A longer timeout cannot repair failed data requests, a wrong destination, or an access denial.

Wait controls vary by provider. Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering reference documents waitUntil choices of load, domcontentloaded, networkidle0, and networkidle2, as well as selector and timeout waits (Cloudflare Get screenshot API reference). Browserless documents waiting for events, functions, selectors, or timeouts (Browserless Screenshot API documentation). Choose the condition that matches the app; a network-idle condition may not be suitable for an app that keeps connections open or polls continuously.
Verify authentication and automation access
If the expected view requires a session, make sure the screenshot request supplies the required cookies or credentials through that provider’s supported mechanism. Cloudflare’s reference describes cookies and HTTP authentication; Browserless documents authentication and configuration options. An image of a login screen usually means the request lacked the necessary access state, not that image generation failed.

If the final page is a CAPTCHA, 403, or other access-denied screen, treat it as a site-access issue. Browserless explicitly notes that blank images, CAPTCHA pages, or content unlike a real browser can indicate that the site is blocking automation (Browserless Screenshot API documentation). Investigate the site’s requirements and use an authorized access path; do not assume that changing a rendering flag will bypass a site’s controls.
Check viewport, clipping, and lazy-loaded content
Make the viewport dimensions, device scale, full-page setting, selector, and clip explicit. A clip or selector can target an empty region, and a viewport can place relevant content outside the captured area. For long pages, lazy-loaded elements may not appear until they enter the viewport. Browserless documents scrolling with full-page capture using scrollPage: true; Cloudflare exposes viewport, clipping, full-page, and scrolling options (Browserless Screenshot API documentation; Cloudflare Get screenshot API reference).

Use this diagnostic sequence
- Reproduce interactively. Open the exact requested URL and establish whether the intended app view appears in a normal browser.
- Verify the captured destination. Record the final URL and main document status; check for redirects, sign-in, challenge, access-denied, and error pages.
- Collect browser evidence. Review console and page errors, failed requests, and the DOM state at capture time.
- Set a meaningful readiness condition. Wait for the app’s visible ready selector or event; use a provider’s supported wait control rather than guessing a delay.
- Confirm access state. Supply the necessary cookies or credentials using the provider’s documented mechanism, if the route requires authentication.
- Make capture geometry explicit. Check viewport, clip, element selector, full-page behavior, device scale, and whether scrolling is needed for lazy content.
- Investigate browser-mode or graphics differences only with evidence. If the app depends on WebGL, check for a graphics-context or rendering failure before testing GPU-related changes. A blank image alone does not establish a WebGL or GPU problem.
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Blank interactively and in the capture | Application route, JavaScript, or data loading | Check console errors and failed app API requests. |
| Works interactively, but capture shows a sign-in or error page | Redirect, session, credentials, or access policy | Inspect final URL and document status; verify authorized cookies or authentication. |
| Capture shows a CAPTCHA or access-denied page | Site blocking automated access | Follow the site’s rules and use an authorized route; do not treat it as an image-format problem. |
| Only some elements or images are missing | Readiness, failed resource requests, lazy loading, or capture bounds | Inspect network failures, wait for the relevant selector, and review scrolling and clip settings. |
| Screenshot captures an empty section or wrong portion | Selector, clip, viewport, or device scale | Make dimensions and target region explicit and compare them with the page layout. |
When to change the screenshot service
If the target page works in a browser and the request, access state, waits, and geometry are correct, compare tools on the controls that affect this failure: selector and event waits, cookie and HTTP authentication support, full-page and lazy-load behavior, visibility into final status and request failures, and compatibility with the site’s access policy. Browserless and Cloudflare document several of these configuration dimensions in their official references linked above. Their existence does not mean a managed renderer will fix an app bug or override restrictions imposed by a site.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API accepts one GET request with a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture options include waits for a selector, delay, or network idle; custom cookies and headers; viewport and full-page settings; and custom JavaScript. For a blank-image investigation, the response’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers identify the page verdict and billing outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a blank image prove the screenshot API is broken?
No. The image may faithfully show a blank app, a login or error page, or an incomplete state. Check the final URL, status, and browser evidence before concluding the capture service failed.
Should I keep increasing the screenshot timeout?
Only if evidence indicates the app is still progressing toward its ready state. A longer timeout will not resolve failed requests, missing authentication, automation blocking, or a capture region that excludes the content.
