A 403 from a screenshot API means a server understood a request and refused it—but it does not, by itself, tell you why or which server refused it. First determine whether the screenshot API call returned HTTP 403, or whether the API succeeded and the image shows a forbidden page from the target website. Then use the response details to check authentication, account permissions, and network policy before making a controlled retry.
First identify which 403 you have
HTTP status codes describe a particular HTTP exchange. A screenshot request can involve the API endpoint and, separately, the website being rendered. The 403 might come from the screenshot service, an intermediary such as a proxy or gateway, or the target site inside a successful screenshot response.
RFC 9110 defines 403 this way: “The 403 (Forbidden) status code indicates that the server understood the request but refuses to fulfill it.” That refusal can involve inadequate credentials, but the cause can also be unrelated to credentials. The standard distinguishes 401, where valid authentication credentials for the resource are missing or absent, from 403, where the server refuses the request. See RFC 9110, section 15.5.4.
- The API returned an HTTP 403: inspect the API response body and headers for a provider error, request ID, or account-specific explanation.
- The API returned an image, but it depicts a 403 page: the capture may have succeeded while the target website refused access to the renderer. The API key authorizes access to the screenshot service; it does not automatically sign the renderer into a separate website.
- You cannot tell from the saved file: check the actual HTTP status and content type. An error response saved with a .png or .jpg extension is not necessarily an image.
Capture the raw API response
Before changing keys or retrying, record enough information to identify the failing layer. Providers use different response formats and status-code mappings, so do not assume that every error is JSON or that a particular account problem always produces 403.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Exact API host and endpoint path, with any key-bearing query value redacted
- HTTP method and status code
- Response headers, especially content type and any provider request ID
- Response body, with secrets removed
- Timestamp, target URL, and non-secret request options
If the content type indicates an image and the response is successful, inspect the image itself for a target-site error page. If the response is an API error, use its body and request ID to follow the provider’s troubleshooting instructions. ScreenshotEngine recommends checking status and content type when an image result cannot be opened; its guidance is specific to that service: Screenshot API errors, rate limits, and troubleshooting.
Check the request against the provider’s requirements
Compare the call with the current documentation for the exact endpoint and HTTP method. Authentication formats are not interchangeable across providers—or necessarily across endpoints from the same provider.
- Confirm the endpoint and method. Verify the hostname, versioned path, and whether the endpoint expects GET or POST.
- Verify credential placement and format. Check whether the key belongs in an Authorization header, a query parameter, or another documented field, and use the required scheme and parameter name.
- Check the key and account. Confirm the key is active and belongs to the intended project or account. Make sure required parameters are present and the target URL is well formed.
- Remove accidental credential leakage. Do not paste a live key into support tickets, public issue trackers, screenshots, or logs. Redact keys in query strings as well as headers.
For example, ScreenshotEngine documents Bearer authentication in the POST header, while its GET endpoint requires an api_key query parameter; a Bearer header alone does not satisfy that GET schema. This is a vendor-specific example, not a general screenshot API rule. Check its current API keys and authentication documentation.

Review account entitlements and access policy
If the request is constructed correctly, check the provider’s dashboard and error response for conditions that can block the account or project. These policies and their status codes vary by vendor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Expired trial, inactive or suspended subscription, or unpaid balance
- Exhausted usage allowance or plan restriction
- Insufficient project or user role
- API restrictions, source IP or origin allowlists, or deployment egress rules
- Geographic or other provider-specific access controls
For instance, ScreenshotAPI.net documents some exhausted-quota, expired-trial, and account-related conditions as 403, while ScreenshotEngine documents monthly quota exhaustion as 429. Neither mapping should be assumed for another provider. See ScreenshotAPI.net error documentation and ScreenshotEngine’s error and limits documentation.
When the target website—not the API—is refusing access
If the API call returned a usable image, examine what the renderer captured. A target site may deny access because it requires a login, blocks the renderer, or applies its own access policy. Fixing the screenshot API key will not necessarily change that result.

Use only access methods you are authorized to use. If the site requires a login, determine whether the screenshot provider supports the necessary cookies or target-site authorization headers, and follow the site’s terms and the provider’s documentation. Do not assume these options exist: ScreenshotEngine says its documented capture endpoint accepts a public URL and does not expose custom cookies or target-site authorization headers on that endpoint. That limitation applies to its documented endpoint, not all screenshot APIs.
Retry only after a relevant change
A 403 is a refusal, not normally a signal to repeat an identical request in a loop. RFC 9110 says a client should not automatically repeat a 403 using the same credentials. Correct the likely cause first—for example, fix the method or credential placement, restore an authorized account or permission, or resolve an applicable network restriction—then make one controlled request.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot API rather than another round of browser or endpoint debugging, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-GET-request capture endpoint. For example, using the documented cURL pattern with a target URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and request options. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 403 always mean my screenshot API key is invalid?
No. A 403 means the responding server refused the request; the cause may involve credentials, permissions, account state, network policy, or another restriction. Identify which request returned it and inspect the response.

Why does my screenshot show a 403 page when the API request succeeded?
The API may have successfully captured the target website’s own forbidden page. The screenshot service’s authentication and the target site’s access controls are separate.
Should I keep retrying a 403 response?
Not with the same credentials and request. Change a relevant condition first, then make a controlled retry; consult the provider’s own policy for transient errors such as 429 or 503.
