Connect Selenium’s Python Remote WebDriver to a running Grid, open the page, and call save_screenshot(). The method saves a PNG of the current browser window on the Python client’s machine. Check its Boolean return value and use a path the client can write to.
What you need before capturing
- A running Selenium Grid endpoint. For a local Standalone learning setup, Selenium documents the default endpoint as
http://localhost:4444. - A browser available to Grid that matches the capabilities requested by your Python client.
- Selenium’s Python package installed in the environment running the script.
- A destination path writable by that Python process. The screenshot file is written by the client, not saved as a remote browser download.
Grid routes WebDriver commands from the client to remote browser instances; it is useful when running tests across browser versions or platforms, or in parallel. See Selenium’s Grid overview and Grid setup guide for deployment options.
Capture and save a screenshot
This example connects to a local Grid endpoint, opens a page, and writes a PNG in the client’s current working directory:

What the code does
Options()creates Chrome browser options. Use the options class and capabilities appropriate to your configured browser.webdriver.Remote(...)asks Grid to create a remote browser session using the endpoint and options.driver.get()navigates the remote browser to the target URL.driver.save_screenshot()captures the current window and writes the PNG to the client-side path provided.- The
finallyblock callsquit()so the remote session is closed even if navigation or saving raises an error.
Choose the screenshot size and output form
Set the window dimensions
If viewport dimensions matter, set the browser window size before navigating and capturing. Selenium’s Python API documents set_window_size(width, height):

Get bytes or base64 instead of writing a file
The Python API also provides get_screenshot_as_png() for PNG bytes and get_screenshot_as_base64() for encoded content. These are useful when your program needs to process or transmit the screenshot rather than save it directly. Understand where files and commands run
With Remote WebDriver, the browser runs on a Grid machine and the Python client sends commands remotely. A screenshot returned through Selenium’s screenshot methods is available to the client; write it to a client-side path that is writable by the process running Python.

Browser downloads are a separate feature with their own remote-filesystem behavior and managed-download configuration. Those download settings are not a prerequisite for taking a screenshot with save_screenshot(); see Selenium’s Remote WebDriver documentation for the distinction.
Troubleshoot common failures
Could not connect to Grid
Confirm that Grid is running and that the configured endpoint is reachable from the machine running the Python client. For local Standalone mode, verify the documented default URL, http://localhost:4444. If Python runs in a container or on another machine, localhost refers to that client environment, not automatically to the Grid host.

Grid cannot create a session
Check that the requested browser options match a browser instance available to Grid. In distributed deployments, confirm that the Grid topology and nodes are configured to provide the requested capabilities. Selenium’s getting-started guide covers Standalone, Hub and Node, and distributed deployments.
The screenshot file is missing or not saved
Check the path relative to the Python process’s current working directory, confirm that the process can write there, and inspect the method’s return value. Selenium documents save_screenshot(filename) as returning False if an I/O error prevents saving; raise or log an error rather than silently treating that result as success.

The image does not include the whole page
save_screenshot() is documented as capturing the current window. Set the desired window dimensions before capture if the viewport is wrong, but use a method explicitly intended for full-page capture if you require the complete page; the cited Python API method alone is not evidence of full-page behavior.
