Neither OBS nor FFmpeg is proven to use less electricity in every YouTube loop-stream setup. The program name alone does not determine power draw: encoder, resolution, frame rate, processing, and the computer’s hardware all matter. There is no matched wall-power test establishing a universal winner, so measure both workflows on your own computer if you need a definite answer.
Why there is no universal winner
Electricity use depends on the work your computer performs, not simply which program launches the stream. OBS says its CPU requirements vary considerably with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. It also uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. OBS system requirements and its performance guidance describe those workload factors.
FFmpeg can loop a video and can be configured to decode, filter, scale, encode, and send media. Which of those jobs it performs—and whether it uses software or supported hardware paths—affects the workload. Its capabilities do not establish that a complete FFmpeg YouTube-stream setup consumes less power than OBS.
No direct, matched OBS-versus-FFmpeg wall-power measurement for a YouTube loop stream is established here. There is therefore no supported wattage or percentage saving to quote.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What changes power draw in each workflow
Encoder choice
Software encoding uses the CPU; supported hardware encoding assigns encoding work to a specialized component, commonly in the GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they take work off the CPU. However, that guidance is not a measurement showing that total system electricity always falls. Encoder generation can also affect image quality at a given bitrate: earlier-generation hardware encoders may produce lower quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. OBS hardware-encoding guidance
FFmpeg hardware options depend on the build, device, and installed drivers. Its documentation also cautions that many hardware-acceleration methods target playback and may not be faster than software decoding on modern CPUs. Hardware acceleration is not automatically an energy saving. FFmpeg documentation

Scenes, filters, and transformations
An OBS scene may require compositing sources such as overlays, text, and additional video. More complex scenes and expensive sources add work; a simple scene can avoid some of that overhead. FFmpeg may simply repeat frames, or it may scale, filter, decode, and transcode the video. A workflow doing more processing is not directly comparable to one doing less.
FFmpeg’s loop filter repeats video frames; loop=-1 sets infinite looping. That describes how to repeat frames, not the energy use of the full streaming pipeline. FFmpeg loop-filter documentation

Output resolution and frame rate
Hold output resolution and frames per second constant when comparing the programs. OBS identifies both as factors in system workload. A lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate stream may reduce the work required, but it is only a fair comparison if that output is acceptable for your channel.
How to compare OBS and FFmpeg on your computer
This procedure is a controlled measurement recommendation, not a reported test result. It compares the whole computer at the wall rather than estimating consumption from CPU or GPU activity alone.

- Fix the test conditions. Use the same computer, source file, YouTube destination, resolution, frame rate, and audio and video targets for both runs.
- Record each configuration. Note the program version, encoder, and relevant output settings. Match the encoding path and quality target as closely as both programs allow. If the paths differ, record that difference rather than attributing the result solely to OBS or FFmpeg.
- Measure equal intervals. Let each setup stabilize, then measure whole-system wall power for the same length of time. Repeat the runs. If you want the added draw from streaming, measure the same computer’s idle baseline under comparable conditions and compare averages.
- Check that the results are equivalent. Confirm the stream stays continuous and that picture and audio quality meet the same target. A run that uses less power because it drops frames or delivers lower quality is not an equivalent result.
A general outlet power meter can be used for whole-system measurement; no particular model is established as necessary here. Keep other conditions consistent as much as possible, including the computer’s power mode and background workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the result
- If one workflow draws less power across repeated, matched runs while maintaining acceptable stream continuity and quality, it is the lower-power choice for that computer and configuration.
- If the settings or output quality differ, the result answers which tested setup uses less power, not which program is inherently more efficient.
- If the figures vary between runs, repeat the comparison and report the range or average rather than claiming a universal saving.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than running a local encoding test, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
