Make your 24/7 YouTube stream easy to recognize, easy to pass along, and worth recommending. Promote its link before it starts, invite viewers to share it with someone who would enjoy it, and keep useful highlights and public archives available afterward. YouTube recommends several of these promotion steps, but neither its guidance nor a request to share guarantees more viewers.
Make the stream easy to recognize and share
Before asking people to share, make sure they can tell what the stream offers and where its link leads. Use a clear title, thumbnail, and description that accurately explain the content and who might enjoy it. YouTube’s live analytics guidance treats a title and thumbnail’s appeal separately from what viewers do after clicking; a clear presentation helps set an appropriate expectation.
Give people one direct link to share, and make the invitation specific. For example: “If you know someone who enjoys this music, send them the stream.” That is a practical prompt, not a YouTube rule or a promise of increased reach.
Promote the link before the stream is live
- Prepare the event. Schedule or otherwise prepare the stream so you have a link to share. Make its title, thumbnail, and description informative and consistent with what viewers will see.
- Share it at least 48 hours before going live. YouTube’s “Promote your live stream” guidance recommends sharing the streaming link at least 48 hours in advance. Pair it with a short teaser explaining what the stream is and why someone might want to watch or pass it on. This is a recommended timing, not a guaranteed audience result.
- Use the places your community already follows you. Share the link through relevant social accounts and community spaces. YouTube also recommends connecting social media accounts and embedding the URL on your own website, if you have one.
- Make the event visible on your channel. YouTube recommends creating a Live section for upcoming and live events, so channel visitors have a clear place to find them.
Give people a reason to share while it is live
Live Chat can make a stream feel like a shared event rather than a video playing in the background. YouTube describes live chat as a way for creators and viewers to interact in real time, and says shared viewing can strengthen community. Invite participation in a way that fits the content: ask a relevant question, respond to chat, or give viewers a simple shared activity.

When it feels natural, ask viewers to send the stream to someone who would genuinely appreciate it. Keep the request brief and connected to the moment; repeated or unrelated prompts can distract from the viewing experience. YouTube’s description of live interaction does not establish a measured causal increase in shares from chat or share requests.
If practical, capture useful highlights during the stream. YouTube recommends creating live highlights while an event is underway, giving you material to share beyond the live moment.

Extend discovery after the live moment
When appropriate, leave the archive public and organize public archives, highlights, and clips into playlists. YouTube recommends these steps and says public archives can increase the reach of future streams. Choose clips that clearly represent the stream and give a new viewer a reason to watch more.

Choose formats and handoffs deliberately
Vertical live and Shorts-feed discovery
YouTube says vertical live streams can be discovered in the Shorts feed. Under its current format guidance, horizontal-only streams do not appear there. Consider whether vertical video suits the content and presentation; do not switch formats solely for discovery if it makes the stream harder to watch.
Live Redirect to a Premiere or another stream
Live Redirect can send viewers at the end of one stream to a Premiere or another stream, which may suit a planned handoff or collaboration. The sending channel needs more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Redirecting viewers to another channel’s live stream requires that channel’s permission. Explain the handoff in advance so viewers know what will happen when the stream ends.

Measure which sharing routes are working
Use YouTube Analytics’ Live content performance information to look beyond peak concurrent viewers. YouTube points creators to impressions, click-through rate, views, average view duration, traffic sources, and search terms. These metrics answer different questions:
- Impressions and click-through rate: whether YouTube showed the stream and whether people chose to click.
- Views and average view duration: whether people arrived and how long, on average, they watched.
- Traffic sources and search terms: where viewers found the stream and what they searched for.
Compare similar streams or formats rather than treating one peak viewer count as proof that a promotion tactic worked. Check whether external promotion is expanding reach, and whether viewers from a route stay to watch.
