Playwright screenshots can differ between Linux and Windows even when the test code and page are unchanged. For one canonical visual baseline, generate and compare screenshots in the same pinned operating-system and browser environment. If you need to verify both platforms, use separate Linux and Windows projects with their own reviewed baselines; do not treat platform-specific rendering as a single shared golden image.
Why Playwright screenshots differ across operating systems
A screenshot records the output of a browser running in a specific environment, not a platform-neutral rendering guarantee. Playwright identifies the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode among factors that can affect rendering. Platform rendering and font availability can also differ. The documentation does not quantify or rank these causes, so inspect the actual diff rather than assuming fonts are responsible. Playwright’s visual comparison guide describes the environmental factors.
- Operating system and rendering: text rasterization and other platform behavior may change pixels or layout.
- Fonts: a missing or different font can alter glyph shapes, line breaks and element dimensions. Confirm font availability and inspect the rendered page before changing configuration.
- Browser and test settings: browser build, viewport, device scale factor, headed versus headless execution and other settings can change the capture.
- Page content: timestamps, rotating content, animations or other volatile areas can differ between captures even in the same environment.
These are diagnostic categories, not a claim that one is the most frequent cause. Playwright’s documentation does not give a percentage breakdown for Linux-versus-Windows failures.
Choose a baseline policy first
| Test goal | Recommended approach | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Assert one approved appearance | Generate and compare the baseline on one canonical OS/browser environment. | Fewer baselines, but this does not validate rendering on the other OS. |
| Validate both Linux and Windows | Use distinct Playwright projects and platform-specific baselines. | More snapshots to review and maintain, but each platform is checked against its own expected rendering. |
| Accept known, tiny rendering noise | After diagnosing the diff, set a narrow maxDiffPixels allowance. |
Less noise, but a broad allowance can hide a genuine visual regression. |
Playwright recommends running comparisons in the same environment where baselines were created, and its snapshot naming supports platform- and project-specific baselines. The right policy depends on whether you want one canonical appearance or explicit coverage of both operating systems. Visual comparison documentation explains snapshot naming and environment consistency.

Fix the mismatch in a controlled sequence
- Decide what the test is meant to prove. If the product has one approved reference rendering, choose its canonical OS and browser environment. If Linux and Windows both matter, configure separate projects and expected images.
- Align the execution stack. Keep the Playwright package, browser build, OS image and relevant settings consistent within each comparison job. For Linux CI, use the official Playwright Docker image or install browser dependencies with the Playwright CLI. Pin the Docker image tag and align its Playwright version with your project. Playwright CI guidance and Docker guidance cover these approaches.
- Match screenshot settings. Compare the same browser project, viewport and device-scale settings, and check whether the failing test runs headed or headless. Reproduce the failure under the relevant environment instead of comparing unlike captures.
- Stabilize genuinely dynamic page regions. Playwright’s
toHaveScreenshot()waits for two consecutive screenshots to match. If content is intentionally volatile and outside the test’s purpose, thestylePathoption can apply a stylesheet to hide that content. Do not mask a region whose appearance is what the test should protect. Screenshot assertion options document this behavior. - Inspect expected, actual and diff images. Classify the mismatch: broad layout shift, font or text change, dynamic content, or small antialiasing variation. Recreate it in the same browser and environment; inspect the page and console when useful. Do not update expected snapshots until you understand what changed.
- Use tolerance only for understood benign variation. Playwright supports
maxDiffPixelsglobally or per project. Start with the narrowest allowance justified by the observed mismatch. The documentation provides configuration examples but no universal correct Linux/Windows threshold. The visual comparison guide describes the option. - Regenerate intentionally changed baselines. If the UI change is expected, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots, review the generated images and commit them. Avoid bulk-accepting failures that have not been diagnosed.
Configure separate Linux and Windows baselines
Use named projects when your test suite should check each operating system deliberately. Keep the projects’ expected snapshots separate, and run the corresponding project in its intended environment. Playwright’s snapshot naming incorporates the project name when multiple projects are configured; platform and browser details also contribute to snapshot names. See snapshot naming rules before organizing existing baselines.
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{
name: 'linux-chromium',
use: { browserName: 'chromium' },
},
{
name: 'windows-chromium',
use: { browserName: 'chromium' },
},
],
});
This defines project names, not operating-system virtualization: run each project in the intended OS environment, such as separate CI jobs or runners. A project name alone does not make a Windows job run on Windows. Keep the same test purpose and relevant browser settings while maintaining the platform’s own expected image.

Keep Linux CI reproducible
- Confirm the installed Playwright package and browser binaries match the intended release. A mismatch between project and Docker image versions can prevent Playwright from locating browser executables, according to the official Docker guidance.
- Use the official Playwright Linux Docker image, or install required browser dependencies with
npx playwright install --with-depswhere appropriate for the CI environment. See Playwright’s CI documentation. - Keep the image tag stable so OS packages and browser runtime do not drift unexpectedly. Verify current official documentation when changing the tag because image and browser versions change.
- Capture with matching viewport and browser project settings, and verify headed/headless mode.
- Use the image diff or trace to identify the element that changed instead of treating every cross-platform mismatch as a font issue.
Troubleshoot common failure patterns
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Passes locally on Windows but fails in Linux CI | OS rendering, fonts, browser build, viewport or headed/headless settings. | Reproduce in the CI environment, compare actual and expected images, and align the browser and screenshot settings. |
| Text edges or line wrapping differ | Font availability or platform rendering. | Check which fonts are installed and actually rendered; do not increase tolerance before determining whether layout changed. |
| Only timestamps, rotating cards or similar regions differ | Volatile page content. | Stabilize the application data or selectively hide out-of-scope content with stylePath. |
| Playwright cannot locate browser executables in Docker | Playwright package and image/browser version mismatch. | Align the Docker image’s Playwright version with the project and follow the current official Docker instructions. |
| Small residual diffs remain after environment matching | Potentially benign pixel-level rendering noise, or an unexplained visual change. | Inspect the diff first; only then consider a narrowly scoped maxDiffPixels allowance. |
| Many snapshots fail after a UI update | Expected product change or broad environment drift. | Establish the cause, update only the appropriate platform baselines, review the generated files and commit them deliberately. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without managing Playwright’s browser runtime, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright guarantee identical screenshots on Linux and Windows?
No. Playwright documents host OS and other environment factors as potential causes of rendering differences; byte-identical cross-platform output is not guaranteed.
Should I update snapshots whenever a cross-platform test fails?
No. Inspect the expected, actual and diff images first, then update only baselines for an understood, intended change.
