Both Playwright and Puppeteer can capture page, element, full-page, and clipped screenshots. If you want screenshot comparisons built into the test runner, Playwright Test has documented page and locator screenshot assertions. Puppeteer documents screenshot capture APIs and options; that alone does not mean it cannot be paired with a separate image-comparison library. For most teams, the practical choice is the framework that fits the existing test suite—unless Playwright Test’s integrated visual assertions address a specific need.
What each tool supports
| Testing need | Playwright | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a page | page.screenshot() can save an image; the API can also return an image buffer for processing. Playwright screenshot documentation |

| Capture a defined region | Use the screenshot API’s clip rectangle. | Use the screenshot options’ clip rectangle. Puppeteer screenshot options |
| Compare screenshots in the test runner | Playwright Test documents page and locator assertions with toHaveScreenshot(). |
The cited screenshot documentation establishes capture APIs and options, not a built-in assertion workflow. Puppeteer can still be combined with separate image-comparison tooling. |
The comparison is about documented workflows, not a measured speed or reliability ranking. The cited documentation does not establish which tool is faster, less flaky, or cheaper to maintain.
Choose based on your visual-testing workflow
Choose Playwright Test for integrated screenshot assertions
Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() and locator screenshot assertions connect capture to visual comparison. A first run creates a reference snapshot; subsequent runs compare against it. This is useful when you want the test runner to own the baseline-and-compare workflow rather than only saving images for another process. Playwright visual comparisons
Choose either tool for capture and downstream processing
If your goal is to save screenshots for reports, debugging, or another image-diff workflow, both tools document page capture, element capture, full-page output, and clipping. The project’s existing language, selectors, and test setup are sensible deciding factors.

Keep an existing test stack unless a capability warrants migration
If your suite already uses one framework and its capture API meets your needs, staying with it avoids migration work without sacrificing a documented basic screenshot capability. Consider changing when a required workflow—such as Playwright Test’s integrated screenshot assertions—provides a concrete benefit. This is practical guidance, not a benchmark-based claim.
Capture screenshots with Playwright
In a Playwright test, take a page screenshot with page.screenshot(). Replace the target URL with a page in your application:
import { test } from '@playwright/test';
test('capture a page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
});
For a full-page image, pass fullPage: true:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
To capture one element, use a locator:
await page.locator('.report').screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });
The screenshot API can also return an image buffer instead of writing to a path, which is useful when your next step processes the image in memory. See the Playwright screenshot documentation for the API details.
Capture screenshots with Puppeteer
In a Puppeteer script, navigate to your page and save the screenshot:

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
await browser.close();
For a full-page capture:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
For an element capture, locate the element and call its screenshot method:
const element = await page.$('.report');
if (!element) throw new Error('Could not find .report');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });
Puppeteer also documents clipping through screenshot options. For exact option behavior, check the Puppeteer screenshot guide and screenshot options reference. The reference pages displayed Puppeteer version 25.12.0 when checked; verify details against the version installed in your project.
Use Playwright Test for screenshot assertions
A screenshot file is only a capture. A visual assertion additionally compares the current rendering with a reference image. Playwright Test documents this workflow with toHaveScreenshot(), including locator assertions:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
On the initial run, Playwright creates a reference snapshot; later runs compare their output against it. Treat the first snapshot as a baseline to review, not as proof that the page is correct. Read the visual comparisons guide for baseline and update behavior.

Make screenshot tests reproducible
Visual comparisons are sensitive to the rendering environment. Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Its documentation recommends running tests in the same environment used to generate the baseline. Playwright visual comparisons
- Generate and compare baselines with the same relevant operating system, browser/runtime version, settings, and headless configuration.
- Keep the page state consistent: use stable test data and control content that changes between runs, such as timestamps or rotating items.
- Capture only after the page has reached the state the test is meant to verify. For dynamic pages, decide what loading or readiness condition makes the screenshot meaningful.
- When a comparison changes, inspect the rendered page and diff before accepting a new baseline; a changed image may represent a defect or an intended UI update.
These practices help isolate application changes from environment and content variation; they do not guarantee identical output across every setup.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is an alternative to try first when you want a hosted capture rather than managing browser setup. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; for a screenshot, use cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets, before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check that navigation completed and the application reached the intended state before capturing. If the page loads content asynchronously, wait for an application-specific readiness condition rather than assuming that navigation alone means every visual element is ready.
An element screenshot fails
Verify the selector or locator matches an element on the page and that the element exists at capture time. If the page renders it conditionally, first wait for the relevant state.
A full-page result omits expected content
Confirm that the content is present and loaded when the capture occurs, especially for pages that load content as the user scrolls. Both APIs document full-page capture, but a capture option cannot include content the page has not rendered.
A visual assertion reports a change
Open the actual image and compare it with the reference. Determine whether the difference is an intended UI change, unstable content, or environment drift before updating the baseline. A baseline update should reflect an approved change, not simply silence a failing test.

Performance, reliability, and cost
The cited official documentation does not provide a controlled Playwright-versus-Puppeteer benchmark for screenshot speed, reliability, or CI maintenance. Measure those characteristics with your own pages, CI environment, capture frequency, and comparison workflow rather than treating an unsupported universal winner as fact. For either framework, account for browser execution and image storage or diff processing in your own setup; no comparative cost figure is established here.
ScreenshotNeo is a hosted option rather than a framework comparison: its stated plans are Free at 1,000 shots/month, Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. These are product plan prices, not a benchmark against the operating cost of running Playwright or Puppeteer.
