Bitrate is the amount of encoded audio or video data sent each second. A higher video bitrate can preserve more detail, but it also needs more upload bandwidth—and it does not guarantee a better-looking or more stable stream on its own. The right setting depends on your platform, codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder and connection.

What bitrate means for a livestream

Video bitrate is the rate at which encoded video data is sent, usually measured in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). Audio uses bitrate too, so the stream’s total data rate includes both audio and video.

Bitrate is neither resolution nor a direct quality score. Resolution describes the dimensions of the picture; frame rate describes how many frames are shown per second. Bitrate is the data budget used to encode and transmit them. With other settings held comparable, giving an encoder more data can reduce visible compression. But higher resolution, higher frame rate, complex scenes and fast movement can all increase demands on encoding or transmission.

The result also depends on codec and encoder implementation, the streaming platform’s ingest settings, and the stability of your network. There is no universal bitrate formula that guarantees a particular quality.

How bitrate affects picture quality and stability

When the bitrate is too low

The encoder has less data available to represent the picture. Fine details may disappear and fast movement can look blocky or smeared, especially in visually complex scenes. A pixelated picture can indicate an insufficient bitrate for the chosen settings, but that symptom alone does not identify the cause.

When the bitrate is too high

A high target consumes more upload capacity. If your connection cannot sustain the total stream rate, the stream can become unstable or drop frames. Twitch advises prioritizing a stable stream over pushing quality to the point where it tests your connection. YouTube likewise says the total stream bitrate must not exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom (YouTube Help: Streaming tips; Twitch: Broadcasting Guidelines).

YouTube’s recommendations differ by codec, including H.264 and AV1/H.265. Its live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and calls for a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before configuring a stream; platform guidance can change.

How to choose and test a bitrate

  1. Choose the platform and output. Decide which service, codec, resolution and frame rate you will use.
  2. Look up that exact configuration. Use the platform’s current encoder guide rather than borrowing another service’s recommendation.
  3. Check sustainable upload capacity. Account for the total stream bitrate and other network use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom.
  4. Configure the encoder. Select a supported encoder and rate-control mode, then set the platform-recommended bitrate and keyframe interval. OBS notes that its video bitrate choice depends on upload speed and streaming service (OBS: Streaming Connection Troubleshooting).
  5. Test before the real stream. If available, use a private or unlisted stream. Include representative movement and audio, and monitor the platform’s stream health.
  6. Adjust based on the result. If the connection or encoder cannot sustain the target, lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test again.

Encoder capacity matters alongside bandwidth. Twitch notes that x264 uses CPU resources, while GPU encoding can use dedicated encoder hardware. A setting that fits your connection may still be too demanding for your encoding setup (Twitch: Broadcasting Guidelines).

Troubleshoot a pixelated or unstable stream

Symptom What to check Practical adjustment
Picture breaks up during fast movement Whether the bitrate matches the platform, codec, resolution and frame rate; whether the connection is stable; and whether encoding is keeping up. Test representative movement. If the connection or encoder cannot sustain the output, reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate.
Stream drops frames or becomes unstable Whether total stream bitrate leaves enough upload headroom and whether other network activity or disruptions are affecting the connection. Lower the stream’s demand and retest; do not push bitrate beyond sustainable upload capacity.
Stream looks poor despite a high bitrate Codec, encoder implementation, content complexity, motion, resolution, frame rate and platform ingest settings. Verify the platform’s exact configuration guidance and test one adjustment at a time. A high number alone does not ensure better quality.

Without your stream configuration and platform logs, a visible breakup cannot be pinned on one cause. Check the settings and conditions together rather than assuming bitrate is the only problem.

What viewers receive may differ from your source feed

Your encoder sends an ingest feed to the platform; viewers may be offered a transcoded version with a different resolution, frame rate or bitrate. OBS describes transcoding as creating alternate feeds so playback can suit a viewer’s device or network. Its documentation says YouTube transcodes all streams, while Twitch access to transcoding is tiered; availability can change, so check current platform information rather than promising every viewer a particular playback option (OBS: Transcoding Options, dated June 9, 2021).
