You can rotate multiple videos in a YouTube livestream without restarting OBS by using OBS Studio’s VLC Video source. Add the files to its playlist, choose whether to loop or shuffle them, and keep OBS streaming while you change the visible source or scene. For a single video that should repeat, use the standard Media Source and its Loop setting instead.
Choose the right OBS source

OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist source; the regular Media Source is intended for an individual file. See the OBS media sources guide. The VLC Video source depends on VLC Media Player being installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. OBS’s source documentation is dated January 11, 2022, so some labels may vary in newer versions.
Set up an automatic playlist in OBS
- Install VLC Media Player. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source.
- Add the source. In the scene that should show the videos, select Sources → + → VLC Video. Name the source and confirm.
- Add and order the files. In the source’s properties, add the media files to its playlist and arrange them in the desired sequence. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order, or turn it on to randomize playback.
- Choose whether the playlist repeats. Turn on Loop Playlist to return to the beginning after the final item. Leave it off to play through once.
- Set how playback behaves when hidden. Choose the visibility behavior that fits your scenes: stop and restart when hidden and shown, pause and unpause, or always play. If the playlist should keep advancing while its source is hidden during a scene change, use the option that keeps it playing while hidden. Verify the behavior in your installed OBS version.
- Preview the result. Check that the files play in the intended order, that looping or shuffling behaves as expected, and that the video and audio appear correctly in the scene.
- Go live through your existing encoder connection. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and stream key. Keep OBS streaming while changing the visible media source or scene; do not use YouTube’s end-stream action just to change playlist content.
This works because changing what OBS composes is a production change, while YouTube receives the stream through the encoder connection. That means a restart is not required for the workflow, though the cited documentation does not guarantee a gap-free or frame-accurate transition for every setup. Rotate items manually or let the playlist advance
For hands-off rotation, VLC Video advances through the playlist automatically. Use Loop Playlist to repeat the queue or Shuffle Playlist to randomize it. If by “rotate” you mean choosing a specific item or playlist yourself, the VLC source implementation includes next and previous controls, but their exact availability and assignment can depend on OBS version. A controller is optional, not necessary for automatic playback.

What not to confuse with playlist rotation
YouTube Live Redirect hands viewers off after a stream ends, to a Premiere or another live stream. It does not switch media inside a still-running OBS output. YouTube lists more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes as eligibility conditions for channels sending redirects; see YouTube’s Live Redirect guidance.
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC Media Player, matching its architecture to OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS if the source is still unavailable.
- The playlist stops when you switch scenes: Check the VLC source’s visibility behavior. A stop-and-restart or pause-and-unpause mode will not keep playback advancing while hidden; select the mode that keeps it playing.
- The same item repeats instead of the whole queue: Confirm that you added all files to a VLC Video playlist. Media Source is for one file and loops that file.
- Items play in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist for a fixed sequence, then check the playlist order in source properties.
- The stream ends when you change scenes or sources: Check that OBS remains actively streaming and that you have not selected YouTube’s end-stream action. Source and scene changes should be made within OBS.
- A file has no video or audio, or behaves differently than expected: Test it in the intended OBS and VLC setup. The cited OBS material does not establish a complete codec-compatibility matrix across operating systems.
Before your first YouTube live stream
YouTube says enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Allow for that approval time before a scheduled first broadcast. Also confirm that the videos and audio in your playlist are cleared for livestream use: using OBS to rotate files does not grant rights to copyrighted material, and YouTube’s policies still apply.
