To run a 24/7 YouTube music radio channel from a Mac mini, use an encoder such as OBS to send a continuous audio-and-visual feed to YouTube Live over RTMPS. First make sure your channel can livestream and that you have the rights to broadcast the music. Then configure the stream, test the real workload and plan for the Mac’s power, internet connection and recovery if something stops.
What you need before starting
- A Mac mini that meets the current OBS requirements: an Intel or Apple Silicon processor and macOS 11 Big Sur or later. Compatibility does not guarantee that every resolution, frame rate and scene will run well continuously; check the current OBS system requirements and macOS compatibility guidance.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your stream, plus headroom for normal variation.
- A music source and the rights required for YouTube livestreaming in the territories you intend to reach.
- A visual to accompany the audio, such as cover art or a gently animated background, and an encoder such as OBS.
- A YouTube channel that is eligible for livestreaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until launch day.
Apple’s Mac mini specifications list a hardware video-encode engine and model-dependent Ethernet options. Those are capabilities, not evidence that a particular Mac mini will run a particular 24/7 stream without interruption. See Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications.
Confirm YouTube livestream eligibility and create the stream
Check channel access before configuring OBS
YouTube’s guidance says the channel needs to be verified and must not have had livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If live streaming has not been enabled before, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the current steps in YouTube’s encoder setup guide and livestreaming tips.
Create or schedule a broadcast and copy its credentials
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a livestream, then find the stream URL and stream key in the encoder setup.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if OBS does not populate them through its account connection workflow.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
YouTube describes encoder-based streaming and the stream URL/key workflow in its encoder setup instructions. OBS is a third-party project, not a YouTube-owned product.

Configure OBS for a low-motion music radio stream
Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate
For a static cover or lightly animated visual, 720p at 30 frames per second is a sensible starting point; that is a practical suggestion, not a YouTube requirement. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. A higher resolution may make sense if the visual contains detail or motion, but it also needs more upload capacity.

These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed quality or uptime figures. Configure a constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s stereo audio guidance is 128 Kbps. For protocol, use RTMPS where available for encrypted ingest, and ensure the encoder matches the selected YouTube ingest settings. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Set up the audio and visual in OBS
- In OBS, add a visual source, such as an image or a media source containing a permitted visual loop.
- Add the music source as a media source or route it through an audio input appropriate to your setup. Confirm the intended source appears in the OBS audio mixer.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate in Settings > Video, then set the video encoder, bitrate, CBR mode and keyframe interval under Settings > Output.
- Use headphones or OBS monitoring to check that the music is audible and not clipping. Watch the meter while the loudest part of the planned program plays.
- Use OBS’s preview and YouTube Live Control Room preview to confirm that the picture, audio and stream status are correct before treating the channel as live.
Exact OBS labels can vary by version and by whether you use the simple or advanced output mode. The important outcome is that the encoder output matches YouTube’s ingest requirements and that the live preview confirms the actual signal.

Size the connection and test the stream
Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. If you run a backup feed at the same time, include its bitrate in the total. Prefer wired Ethernet where available; Apple lists Ethernet configurations by Mac mini model, so check your own model rather than assuming a port or speed.

- Run an upload speed test at the location and on the connection the Mac mini will use.
- Compare stable upload capacity with the full outgoing bitrate. Leave at least the 20% headroom YouTube recommends.
- Start OBS ahead of the planned launch and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators.
- Test the actual music, visual motion and audio levels, not just an idle OBS scene.
- Run a longer soak test and observe what happens if the network disconnects or the Mac restarts. Test any failover encoder separately before relying on it.

Clear the music rights before broadcasting
Do not assume that a track is cleared for livestreaming because it is available through a consumer music subscription or described as “royalty-free.” YouTube’s livestream terms say the creator must have the rights necessary for worldwide use of the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other rights participants. Review the YouTube livestream terms and secure permission for the use you intend.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Even where you have a licence, a rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist; otherwise the live feed may be interrupted. Confirm the owner’s allowlisting procedure and make sure the licence covers the intended territories, livestream use and any archive or monetization plans. Plan for unattended operation and archives
A 24/7 broadcast depends on more than a compatible encoder: the Mac, network and power must remain available, and someone needs a way to notice and recover problems. The cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish a Mac-specific recipe for sleep prevention, launching OBS after reboot or restarting OBS after a crash. Test macOS power settings and any recovery automation on your exact Mac mini before depending on it.

If you need a complete copy of the broadcast, plan a separate local recording or rolling-file strategy and confirm YouTube’s current archive behavior for a continuous stream. Do not assume YouTube will preserve the full length of an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
