It matters both when a camera captures a scene and when a screen displays it: those are different ranges, and captured footage can contain more detail than a display can show at once.
What dynamic range means in a video image
Imagine filming a dim room with a bright window. The scene may contain detail in both the shadows and the window, but the camera has limits: if the window clips to featureless white or the shadows sink into unusable noise, that detail is not available in the recording.
Dynamic range describes the brightness span between the darkest and brightest image information. In camera specifications, it usually refers to the camera and recording pipeline’s ability to capture that span. For a screen, it means the range of brightness the display can reproduce. A camera may capture a wider range than a particular monitor can show at once.
What a stop means
A stop is a step in exposure: one stop more light doubles the amount of light, and one stop less halves it. Dynamic range is often expressed in stops because each stop represents a doubling in brightness. More stops can mean more room to retain highlight and shadow detail, but a quoted number is meaningful only alongside the camera, recording mode, and measurement method.

ARRI says Log C maps exposure measured in stops to equal signal increments across a wide range, and that “Each stop of exposure increases the signal by the same amount.” Log encoding helps represent captured values; it does not increase the sensor’s underlying capture range.
Camera range and display range are not the same
Camera range concerns how much scene brightness information survives capture and recording before highlights clip or shadows become too noisy. Display range concerns the contrast and brightness a monitor or television can reproduce. If footage has more range than the target display, a color transform or tone mapping can adapt it for viewing.

| Claim | Context |
|---|---|
| 17 stops | ARRI’s ALEXA 35 and ALEXA 35 Xtreme claim; ARRI says it was measured with the Xyla chart and ARRI Analysis method. |
| 14+ stops | ARRI’s ALEV3 sensor claim, measured with ARRI’s Dynamic Range Test Chart. |
| About eight stops | ARRI’s description of an SDR monitor. |
| 6 to 10 stops; around 100 nits | Apple Motion’s description of SDR. |
| 13 stops | Blackmagic Design’s published claim for its Pocket Cinema Camera product family. |
ARRI’s camera numbers use identified charts and methods; that does not make them directly comparable with every other manufacturer’s claims. Stop counts can vary with model, settings, recording mode, noise threshold, and test method. The sources above do not establish one universal camera figure or a neutral cross-camera ranking.

Is dynamic range the same as HDR?
No. Dynamic range describes a brightness span. HDR, or High Dynamic Range, is a way to encode and deliver video for a compatible display path that can represent a wider brightness range than standard dynamic range (SDR). HDR depends on the footage, encoding, playback chain, and screen; selecting an HDR option cannot restore highlights or shadows that were lost during capture.
HDR workflows can use PQ or HLG transfer functions. Rec. 2020 identifies a color gamut in the cited YouTube workflow; it is not another name for dynamic range. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for Rec. 2020 with PQ or HLG for HDR grading and says non-HDR devices receive an SDR version.

HDR also does not guarantee that every scene will look brighter on every screen. Sony notes that HDR footage from a low-range scene can appear darker than SDR on a particular device. The result depends on content and playback.
What shooting in Log does—and does not do
Log is an encoding that stores captured tonal information across a broad range in a flatter-looking image, leaving room for later grading. That flat appearance is not necessarily a fault. It is a recording image that generally needs a display transform or grade to look intentional on a monitor or in a finished video.
Log does not automatically mean HDR, and it does not create extra sensor range. In ARRI’s workflow, Log C needs tone mapping and conversion for its intended SDR, HDR, or projection target. For SDR delivery, Adobe documents tone mapping HLG or PQ footage into the narrower Rec. 709 space. The transform determines how the captured values are mapped to the destination.

How to judge exposure and preserve useful detail
Expose for the scene and intended finish
In a high-contrast scene such as a bright window in a dim room, decide which highlights and shadows must retain detail. If highlights clip or shadow detail is lost in noise, grading cannot recover the missing information. A camera with more capture latitude can give you more flexibility, but it does not remove the need to make exposure choices.
Use a waveform to inspect signal levels
A waveform shows luma, or brightness, levels and where they occur across the picture. Blackmagic Design describes its waveform display as a digitally encoded waveform showing the luma levels of a video signal. It can help you see whether highlights approach the top of the signal or shadows sit near the bottom. It is a monitoring aid, not an artistic decision-maker or a guarantee that detail has survived.
Check the actual delivery target
Choose the intended SDR or HDR workflow before finishing. Confirm the color space, transfer function, display, and platform path your workflow requires. If broad-range footage is headed for SDR Rec. 709, use an appropriate transform or tone mapping and inspect the result on a suitable display rather than expecting the unconverted Log image to look finished.

How many stops of dynamic range do you need?
There is no single stop count that suits every creator or scene. A bright exterior, a dim interior, and a controlled studio setup place different demands on capture. The useful question is whether the camera and recording mode preserve the highlight and shadow detail your scenes and grading workflow need.
- Compare figures only when you know which camera and recording mode they describe, how the manufacturer measured them, and what threshold defines usable detail.
- Do not assume a higher published number means a visibly better result in every scene. Exposure, noise, lighting, and the intended delivery all matter.
- Assess footage on the display and delivery path you actually intend to use; camera capture range and screen range solve different parts of the chain.
Common misunderstandings
- “HDR adds dynamic range to footage.” HDR is a compatible encoding and presentation path; it cannot restore information the camera clipped or recorded as unusable noise.
- “Log footage is HDR.” Log is an encoding of captured values. It can be transformed for SDR or HDR delivery.
- “Rec. 2020 means more dynamic range.” Rec. 2020 describes color primaries and gamut in the cited workflow. PQ and HLG are transfer functions used for HDR.
- “More stops always means a better image.” Published stop counts depend on measurement methods and conditions, and the target display may not reproduce the entire captured range.
Or let it run in the cloud
Dynamic range is about capture and display, not 24/7 broadcasting. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
