You need at least 50 subscribers to start a live stream from YouTube’s mobile app. That is only the access threshold: your channel must also be verified, live streaming must be enabled, you must have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and your phone or tablet must meet YouTube’s minimum operating-system requirements. Below 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit a mobile stream’s audience and make its archive private by default.
What subscriber count do you need to go live from a phone?
YouTube’s current mobile live-streaming requirement is at least 50 subscribers. Reaching 50 makes the channel eligible to use the mobile live feature, but does not by itself guarantee that the Go Live option will appear immediately or that the stream and its archive will have unrestricted visibility. YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements also include verification, live-stream activation, a clean restriction window, and a supported device.

The key distinction is feature access versus distribution and archive treatment: 50 is the mobile access floor, while the below-1,000 safeguards may affect who can watch and the default privacy of the saved stream. If subscriber numbers later fall below 1,000, the audience limitation can return. A channel does not lose mobile live access solely because it falls below 1,000; the stated mobile access floor is 50 subscribers.

- At least 50 subscribers: YouTube’s minimum for mobile live streaming.
- Verified channel: Complete YouTube’s channel verification requirement.
- Live streaming enabled: Turn on the feature before trying to start a stream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- No live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days: A restriction during that period can prevent access even if the channel has enough subscribers.
- Supported device software: YouTube lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later as minimum operating-system versions.

- Check the channel’s subscriber count. Confirm it has reached 50. If it has not, the mobile feature is not yet available under YouTube’s stated threshold.
- Check verification. Confirm the channel has completed YouTube verification.
- Check live-stream activation. Enable live streaming for the channel and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation to finish.
- Check for restrictions. Determine whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If so, subscriber count alone will not resolve the block.
- Check the device operating system. The stated minimum is Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+.
- Allow for the 1,000-subscriber processing period. If the issue is limited reach or a private-by-default archive after crossing 1,000, YouTube says removal of the audience limitation can take several weeks; crossing the threshold does not necessarily change it instantly.
If your channel has 50–999 subscribers, audience limits or private-by-default archives may be normal platform behavior rather than evidence that mobile live access has failed. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder as distinct streaming methods, but the requirements summarized here concern mobile; do not assume the mobile subscriber threshold is also the requirement for desktop methods.
What happens to a mobile stream’s audience and archive?
For channels below 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the audience for a mobile stream and set its archive to private by default. These are possible safeguards, not a guarantee that every stream will receive the same treatment. After reaching 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may need several weeks to remove the audience limitation. If the channel drops below 1,000, that limitation can apply again.

Age rules for creators and participants
YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance sets 16 as the minimum age to start a live stream. It separately addresses younger participants: when someone under 16 participates through an adult-owned account, an adult must be visibly present. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming rules for the applicable situation rather than treating subscriber eligibility as the only policy requirement.
Mobile, webcam, and encoder are different methods
YouTube identifies mobile, webcam, and encoder streams as separate ways to go live. The 50-subscriber rule discussed here is specifically YouTube’s mobile requirement.
